You haven't seen bad driving until you drive in the Philippines. Ugh.

Colorado.

50 in the left lane, rolling roadblocks around trucks, dropping to a crawl to rubberneck at a broken down car on the shoulder, interpreting red lights to mean "3 or 4 more cars, quick!", this state has it all.

When your light turns green here, count two Mississippis before you give it gas. Even money someone's going to come flying through the intersection.

Re: Gear Grinding 8: I Got A Lot Of Problems With You People!

No. I've driven or ridden in all 3 of those states.

I bet less than 5% of drivers here have taken even 1 minute of drivers education. Drivers will straddle two lanes as if their life depended upon it. Right turn lane from the left lane? Failure to stop? Yielding is optional. No one drives the speed limit - 75% drive way under while 25% drive way over. Jeepneys, semis, buses and vans are all driven like sports cars. The guys on trykes (cycles with a side car) and scooters assume they have the right away over any car just because. Two lanes become 3 or sometimes 4 at every intersection. Working headlights, break lights and running lights are optional. Drifting from one lane to the next on a curve is nearly mandatory. I s**t you not this is just the tip of the iceburg.

Sounds like Georgetown Guyana when I visited many years ago and the inner city Istanbul (but not the old city) more recently. Rules don't really exist, though I suppose every environment has its unwritten rules. I sure as hill couldn't see them. It would be interesting to hear what the hire car/taxi drivers in the Philippines have to say about those unwritten rules.

The fact that people knowingly and willfully violate Lock Out/Tag Out at my plant. Our bonus depends on how many "recordable" injuries we get in the fiscal year, and we're already at 4 out of 16.

That being said, if you want to nominate yourself for a Darwin Award...

Jesus Christ. I would report that to OSHA. LOTO deaths are fairly high on the list of occupational deaths.

Violating LOTO at my company will get you fired immediately or permanently banned from the property. They have insane (in a good way) procedures for LOTO.

And you know who's the biggest offenders? People who have been here awhile.

My company suspends you for three days and it stays on record for one year. I think the folks in Arkansas need a tougher penalty nationwide.

This isn't the first time I've heard about this. The cities that constantly come up when people talk about horrific driving are Cairo and Manila. I have not had the pleasure of either.

We have a couple Fun Rooms with equipment that falls under LOTO. The first violation gets you a disciplinary hearing. The second gets you fired. In addition if it is determined it was willful there is possible criminal prosecution by the company for exposing them to federal liability.

Our program has run for 30 years. There has never been a first offense.

Well yeah. They usually are. Just remember. If they violate LOTO for themselves, they’ll violate it for you as well. Don’t let negligent *******s kill you.

Last person to violate our policy was fired. We did have an incident where someone went into an area without verifying LOTO and had a near miss. There were a number of week+ suspensions.

We probably have about 15,000 official lockout points on site. And I’m thinking that’s way low.

That sounds like an enormous production facility. We don't have anything like a production floor, thank god. When I look at my coworkers I'd project a couple fatalities a month if we did.

The worst accident in our program's history was 25 years ago: a homemade rocket being fired down the length of a corridor at 4 in the morning by a couple bored (stone cold sober) techs. It embedded in a wall and they needed to close the building and bring in heavy equipment to dig it out and examine if there was serious structural damage to the load-bearing wall.

One of the guys is still working here. His kid is serving life for murder.

Have I mentioned my coworkers are all Trump voters?

I should probably have stayed in academia.
