Gear Grinding 8: I Got A Lot Of Problems With You People!

Re: Gear Grinding 8: I Got A Lot Of Problems With You People!

Got home today about the same time as my roommate. I’m coming back up the driveway and she asks if I want “any of these” because she was just going to throw them away.

“These” ended up being homemade cookies and peanut brittle from a coworker. Who the hell throws away Christmas cookies and peanut brittle? Peanut brittle!

I think I’m going to start locking my bedroom door at night until she proves she’s not an insane person.

I use Siri to add things to my grocery list app AnyList.

I get to the bottom of my list as I’m planning a grocery trip. At some point it had interpreted ‘ketchup’ as ‘catch-up’

 :D

I can see Christmas cookies, to be honest. 90% of them are pretty but taste blah.

But throwing away peanut brittle? That's a hanging offense in my house.

Been getting that here for a few months. Now if I see the 1st 6 digits of my phone number on my cell, it's blocked.

I was getting those over the summer. The scammers were using the same area code and exchange as my cell number. They even spoofed my number for their robo-dialer as I had one person text me asking why I called them.

They seem to have stopped, for now.

At first I assumed it was a wrong number or three because it's my Michigan cell # (never got an Illinois number when I moved down here).

Getting a lot of scam calls that look like local numbers.

I get one from the same area code and exchange at least once a week. The offshore scammers are getting clever with the spoofing, but not clever enough for this guy. I've been screening every number I don't recognize for 3+ years now.

One of my cell numbers has a weird area code. That area code shows up as a scam number about once a week. I'll give them credit for persistance.

I get a scam warning for a call from a pharm company every 3 months or so. Trouble is, I need to take that call, as it is a legit call, notifying me of my medicine for a health issue. The issue is, the last four digits are usually different. I recognize the number from the area code and first 3 digits. Hence, I take that call. It kinda sucks; minor hassle, but have to deal with it.

I had a friend who used to answer scam calls in the 80s with "Federal Bureau of Investigation, please hold." It doesn't work anymore because Prakeet from Bangalore doesn't care.

To echo others here: **** cancer. One of the people I love most dearly has a terrible kind.

Ironic I sat and saw Joe Biden Saturday as he talked about losing beau.

Re: Gear Grinding 8: I Got A Lot Of Problems With You People!

Having fallen victim to what I call the "Millenial Trap"...

I've got a college degree, but am stuck working an hourly retail job that goes nowhere. I can't move up past a "lead" position in retail because there is always some person who was promoted to manager with K-mart or Sears 20+ years ago and I have yet to get that title. So they win by default. (Also I work for an outdoors retailer. Having a clue about the outdoors industry, field experience with products, and industry trends, history and operations has no relevance. Selling towels at K-mart trumps knowledge of the industry I need to sell).

This is coming to a front simply cause working the holidays flat out sucks. The American consumer gets needier and more entitled every year. Any complaint registered against me is held against me, no matter how wrong the customer is (recent example: Was told a promo was over and the ad was a misprint. We ended the promotion and will not honor it. Tell a customer this. Customer complains. I get in trouble for not honoring the promo despite the direct order from the next person up the food chain. Was told that I should use better judgement and just take care of the customer. Hence why we have the "Give a Mouse a Cookie" problem :( ).

You may ask why I don't find another job? Well, that takes time/effort that I don't really have. I work some sort of side job 10+ months of the year. I can get by with a bare bones budget from the main job, but my side gigs give me a bit of spending money and a small "Oh ****, I need money cause ________" cushion. Also, see above about applying for promotions.

It just sucks getting asked by family that you don't see often asking what you're doing with your life and having them be disappointed when I say what I actually do. I know I'm not the only person with this problem (**insert joke about an NMU degree here**). It's just the times we live in. And the leadership is doing their best to make it that much harder going forward.
