Gear Grinding 7: Really? This crap again?

Re: Gear Grinding 7: Really? This crap again?

"We apologize for the inconvenience"

That is almost insulting, I'd prefer you not say anything at all. Some poor underpaid overworked staffer with no authority shoved in front of angry people in a pathetic attempt to deflect their anger so that the actual people responsible for the mess can skate by untouched.

"We just left you trapped in a long sealed metal tube for three hours with a hundred other people in the dark with no ventilation and no working bathrooms. We apologize for the inconvenience."

We could start a meme with that corporate / government callousness.

Only if we can add, especially after being on hold for half an hour, "Your call is important to us."

Re: Gear Grinding 7: Really? This crap again?

So I go to a concert, wasn't TOO crazy about it but FlagDUDETTE wanted to go, and they were quite decent. What grinds my gears, you ask?

One: You are there to enjoy the concert, NOT TO PLAY ON YOUR ELECTRONIC DEVICES! I'm trying to take in the show, and there's this zombie just playing on the device making it incredibly distracting to pay attention. I do wish it were legal to jam RF (both cell AND wifi) inside concert halls, and that the venues would actually do that. It's even worse when they're sticking it up to record the thing, which they had announced is strictly prohibited. You can't take the time to enjoy it the first time around, why the hell should you enjoy it afterwards?

Two: If you have to get up, DO IT BETWEEN SONGS OR MOVEMENTS! There's nothing worse than having your experience interrupted by some wasted ***** that can't control her bladder, and then loudly claims how she didn't pay for the tickets, so that makes her somehow entitled to be a rude little ****, especially after spilling beer on the lovely person I accompanied and having her smell like Budweiser for the rest of the night.

Co-workers who don't do any work. There are three of us in tank wash, and two of us went on break. When I got back, all the tanks in the room were re-arranged, , but nothing had been cleaned. This guy has done this to us before. So, next one on one with the boss, I will bring this up.

A suggestion....when you discuss with boss, do not position it as a complaint about the co-worker; instead, frame it as if you are asking the boss for advice on how to handle the situation: "Boss, I need your help and your advice. I'm not sure what to do here, what are our protocols on how I am supposed to respond to a situation like this?" or something along those lines.

Many people like to be asked for assistance, it helps them feel better about themselves. and many bosses get inured to hearing people complain about co-workers and tune it out. So you can get the boss to be receptive first and then have him help you solve the problem instead of having him tune you out and say "tough, deal with it."

Just a thought.

The guy in question has been flaky before, so I will do it this way.

This is very good advice.

Re: Gear Grinding 7: Really? This crap again?

Yes. Never blame someone. Make it sound like you need help/advice. No throwing under the bus.

Also never put the person you are talking to into a difficult position, especially if they are your supervisor, because they have to consider the HR angle. Their responsibility is to the company, not you. But if you use Fish's approach you are allowing them to judge for themselves how far out on a limb to go for you. Sometimes there are other wheels turning that don't give them any room, and coming off as demanding just makes you another problem to solve. Other times you're an answer to a maiden's prayer because he needs a context to discipline the miscreant.

Obviously there are situations (harassment, actual threats) this isn't enough and you should report it to HR yourself. Even then I personally would give my super a heads-up first unless he was part of the problem.

agree with all. Also you tend to get way more results when you present it as deferring to the super's advice esp if you follow it and the person still continues the behaviour

Re: Gear Grinding 7: Really? This crap again?

From a supervisory standpoint...how are breaks done there? Do you go when you want, or are they scheduled for you? A simple solution might be to stagger all three of your breaks so only one person is on break at a time...

For an 8 hour shift, 2 30 minute breaks (one paid and one unpaid) every 3 hours. For example, I take my breaks at 6 and 9 after starting at 3. One person goes first, then the other two go.

I'll see what happens on Tuesday.

Re: Gear Grinding 7: Really? This crap again?

Cat has had stitches in his ear and the cone of shame for 3 weeks now. Go in to the vet get the stitches out per their instructions, told the ear is still healing and need to give it another week. Which sucks, but whatever.

What grinds my gears is the vet couldn't come tell me this herself. The vet tech took the cat back and then returns 2 minutes later to spring the bad news on me.

We take our two cats to this veterinary practice because they're convenient and are open 7 days a week, but there's 6 vets, only 2 of which we really like (1 of which is the owner). The other 4 are all recent graduates who, while I'm sure are medically competent, have the bed side manner of a used car salesman. Constant upselling, giving us conflicting directions from the last visit, etc.

Social media. How do some of these people maintain such a high level of reactivity and outrage, have such short and selective memories regarding stupid behavior on the political spectrum. If people are really as stupid as they come across in some of the stuff I am seeing today I wonder how they come in out of the cold. Both sides of the spectrum included. Wow.
