Re: Gear Grinding 7: Really? This crap again?

I really dislike, quite intensely, these new voice-activated menus. They never seem to get you anywhere useful.

"Please say a few words about what you want."
-- my internet isn't working
"Do you want to sign up for new internet service?"
-- no, my existing internet isn't working
"I don't understand you. Please say a few words about what you want."
-- internet tech support.
"If you can't remember your user name or password, we can send you a message with that information."
-- what good will that do, my internet isn't working
"I don't understand you. Please say a few words about what you want."
-- can you connect me to an actual human being?
"I don't understand you. Please say a few words about what you want."

First thing I say is "Customer Service." Then it goes as such:

-Operator.
-Cancel service.

If nothing comes from those, I go onto their website to find an online chat customer service rep. If THAT fails, then I go to their Facebook page and post what horrible customer service they have and make sure it's there for all of my friends to see. And if it goes that far, I let them know the steps I took to get to that point and that I will find a new provider shortly. I just did that with Sprint for my cell phone recently.

Did you end up having to call, and then be part of a 20 minute circular argument about it?

I called Sprint a few weeks ago, shortly before Christmas because they said that I used roughly 100MB of data in one day, when my phone was sitting in my house the whole time and connected to my LAN. I called the number they provided in their notice so I could dispute their claim. It was all automated answering, and none of the options provided allowed for me to talk to customer service about a dispute. I then went online to the "Sprintzone" section of their site, to which I was directed in my notice, and tried to find an agent for a chat session from the Contact Us page. Nothing doing. I then went to Facebook where a customer service agent did respond to my post, saying that they take complaints very seriously and asked for me to provide my account number and PIN through FB's chat. It was at that point that I asked the Sprint agent why she was promoting identity theft by having me post such info through a questionably secure interface and she cutoff communications, offering no other recourse.

When my contract ends I will have a new cell phone provider.

Wonder if the 100MB was used to DDoS some sites... After all, they've been using refrigerators, smart TVs, and other "connected" devices...

Our cart-pushing assistant is broken again. This time, you push the buttons on the remote, and nothing happens. Also, it works when it wants to. Trying to bring a line of carts in, and it will stop on you.

Add this to the fact the battery has a memory, and I'm ready to dump that thing.

Repeated equipment failure is just one reason I'm looking for new employment.

Some of them will recognize swearing as an irate customer and put you through to a human.

Back in the day, we pushed the carts by hand through a blizzard. GET OFF MY LAWN! :p:D

You know what really grinds my gears? Overuse of sarcastic quotation marks in written language.

Also, the morning crew on the radio station that my wife insists on having on in her car. 101.1 in Green Bay simply employees some of the worst low brow dip ****s on the face of this planet.

When non-medical 'systems' people think they know what is best for medicine and pontificate to folks on FB

"Forward thinking healthcare providers know that they have to change and implement business models that are designed to put the patients 1st, not the providers. The providers that don't do this will get out or go out of business. I have seen that it is possible"

"Not being condescending but I have had experience with docs and nurses that "get it and those that don't. The ones that get it are much happier in their practices. "

ye...ah. You mean the people who rollover and play dead, sell their soul for a piece of silver and lick your but telling you how right you are. When >60 % of a specialty rate themselves as burnt out and credit the reason as stuff related to business model implementation they are just not getting it. and they wondered why we thought the consultants they sent us were arrogant a55es? This about sums it up.

Phew I feel better. Even better that I am out (because of course I couldn't stand putting the patient first!) and don't have to 'get it.'

The thing that tipped me over the edge:

They read a news item about some woman who pre-paid her mortgage, insurance, etc. then set a simple stipend for food and toiletries and otherwise didn't spend any money last year.

The hosts, one of them in particular, was somehow offended. She kept going on and on about how "people shouldn't feel bad for spending money" and how boring this woman must be (but "she wasn't judging) and "what if you wanted to have a dinner with your family" and all sorts of nonsense.

All that defensive behavior, when at no point had anyone said anything about the woman's social experiment being a criticism of anyone's lifestyle.

i thought it was ridiculous... this radio host was offended by someone doing "A" and assuming that it was some sort of rebuke on anyone who doesn't do the same thing. Why do so many people assume that support for one thing automatically denounces anything else?

It's like a white person saying that they're offended at a Tyler Perry movie because "what about white people? Don't they have a story too?".

Not sure who this is directed to, as it's kind of a minor rant about the subject...

We've been indoctrinated that we must be spenders and get stuff. Stuff like "keep up with the Jones'" and making people feel that they need stuff and whatnot.

I think this past recession has pointed out to people that it's not really needed to be at the leading edge of that- spending money does not make you happy for so many items. You can see this kind of thinking in your grandparents that lived through the Depression- who were frugal, fixed a lot of stuff, etc. Somehow, a group of consumers in the 50's started to get on the disposable bandwagon, and it grew from there. And now it's Patriotic to just spend money on stuff.

I think a large groups of consumers have gotten back to that thinking, and it's illustrated in shows like "Tiny House Nation" and the off the grid living shows- people who are learning to live with less of pretty much everything. And that's one of the reasons that the economy grows so slowly. Our economy is totally based on people buying stuff.

It sucks that anyone would ***** and moan that there are people out there who don't want to buy stuff for the sake of buying it.

On the other hand, it's odd when people do have money, and don't even spend for the basics- like keeping clean, having proper food, etc. I know someone like that, and it's kind of sad- have more than enough money to cover the nominal expenses to live on exactly as you have, but don't even do that.

A few yrs ago was listening to the radio and heard a show where the interviewed a bunch of economists. Fascinating. They pointed out the reason the economy had been booming was people were encouraged to spend way beyond their means which drove the economy. That fell down on itself. The wise choice was to spend within your means however- if everyone did that the economy would be stagnant or have very slow growth. ie there is no way to perpetuate large growth without having periodic collapses. Made me lad I didnt need to fix economy

And why do you suppose people are spending beyond their means? Sure, avarice does play a role. Perhaps also what I would call the "Scrooge effect", where you are chastised for miserly sitting upon your wealth. Look to the Federal Reserve for their comment, however, because they have used this as their justification for intentionally inflating the dollar, even during recessions, thereby creating two of the worst instances of stagflation in history.
