There are no other options. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

Exactly why customer service is the way it is. You'd be shocked how prompt and decent the cable company is around here. All it takes is for Verizon FiOS to be in town. ;)

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

I got a call from someone at Comcast over the weekend. Chewed the ***** a new one. Asked her "why the **** would a company think it is good customer service to call an existing customer like a telemarketer over and over, after being told to stop?" Also told her that Comcast has "the worst ****ing customer service I've ever experienced " and "I'm dropping them as soon as I have another option".

I rarely had any issues but I know I'm in the minority not only from anecdotes from friends, and if you investigate the NPS for national providers Direct TV typically scores in the 30's while Comcast hovers around 0. When Comcast realized this in 2014 their answer was to offer $20 back when appointments weren't kept. The problem is that if you need someone to come out to your house it's quite often because the s**t isn't working already. Showing up on time is the least of their worries. They even added 5000+ CS agents in mid-2015 to tackle the problem. They spent vast resources to tackle the problem and change the culture that their employees just don't give a s**t and although very little recent data exists, it would appear they've made very little if any improvement. Not sure what the turnaround time should be for a company of that size, but at my company failure to improve a drastically lagging NPS in less than 3 months gets you fired.

animated emojis on our in-house IM system (off the shelf software). Not only is that annoying enough in and of itself. They also insert the emojis randomly. I typed a list to one of my bosses in which I listed considerations (a), (b) and (c) and that is exactly how it appeared on my screen. then I hit "send" and he receives it with three animated emojis, an angel, a beer, and a cup.

Now, after the fact, I find that if I dive deeply enough into those buried menus, there is a check box to turn off emoji animation (why was it ever left on as a default option in the first place??)

Not on my work PC. They're not allowed in my company, possible data breach to have so many cameras in the office.

The funny thing is, my work has 100% switched to Skype. So 90% of my work conversations ara now Skype

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

Yeah, we have Skype for Business. Which is nothing like regular skype.

people who shirk responsibility out of sheer laziness, leaving the work for someone else. yes, I am talking about the coffee pots at work again. what is so ****ing complicated about this? the amount left in both pots - combined - was barely enough for a cup. at 7:30 am, when obviously a lot more people are going to need coffee.

My solution is . . . don't drink coffee. The amount of angst and consternation over this issue in all the offices I've worked in has always astonished me. Fortunately I just snicker and make my tea.;)

I only drink work coffee under dire circumstances (because it's ****ing terrible). I bring the first cup from home, and usually don't need more than that. But today.... I did.

Buy a small k-cup brewer and keep it at your desk. Speaking of which...

Or smaller and easier to deal with (as you can make tea, too) get an aeropress or a french press.

I rarely make coffee at work as it's terrible and expensive. Far more expensive than $15/lb coffee I bring from home.

Or just never start with caffeine. You'll find yourself so much happier.

Got my electric bill yesterday for the month of February. It was more than my January bill. OK, so we did have those couple of days of below zero temps during which I ran my heat pump. However, I was literally not in my home for 16 if the 29 days in February. No lights were on, the TVs were not on, no dishwasher or washing machine/dryer running. I know people say to unplug items when you're not home but I cannot imagine that my bill would go up that much due to plugged in items when I was physically not there.

Have you checked the kilowatt hours used between the two bills, likely listed as kWH? Also, did your bill for February also include part of January? Billing for utility companies aren't necessarily synced to the standard calendar. Lastly, what was the kWH unit-pricing between the two months? The real kicker about an electric bill, at least around here, is that there's basically a base amount you pay the company for simply making service available - the infrastructure portion of the bill; sometimes that makes up as much as 75% of the bill.

As a rule of thumb, your biggest energy consumers are anything that creates or removes heat. That's heaters and furnaces (heat pump,) air conditioning, range/oven/stove, refrigerator. Lights really don't eat that much juice, especially CFLs and LEDs. TV, dishwasher, and W/D eat some, but individually they won't be nearly what your heater eats.

Your power company could also have just chosen to estimate your bill based on past usage rather than read your meter. That happens sometimes and could have messed things up.

If all else fails, have the power company come out and check your meter.
