One thing that really annoys me is when a document has an asterisk or a superscript in the text but then there is no corresponding footnote anywhere to be found.

Locking down the process doesn't sound to me to be very agile. ;)

Some of us analysts would here these change requests from the business about making a certain function a necessity. We would tell them what that would entail, and they'd come back with something else. It often becomes a game of wheedling down this new scope to the point where it's a minor tweak. Then we'll go to the PM with this request and sort of home to get told that it's not possible due to the CR lock for implementation and that it would be a future release item.

It's odd for where I work. We strive for Agile development, but we're hamstrung by the auditors because we're a division of a large bank. We can't omit anything in our requirements documentation, which might require a BA a day or two to complete before a developer can review and give the yea or nay response to then go develop it. Management has created this paradox out of fear of both internal and government audits, and then gets irritated at the project team for taking longer than they think it should take to develop an application and they can't make amendments to their wanted features when there's still a month to release date.

If you have a regular release schedule, this is why you then have specific cut-off dates in order for this stuff to happen. In your line, it's even more important for auditing purposes. And then any time some form of an 11th hour change comes in, it puts your product at risk of needing even more rework. It does result in a significant backlog, but I suppose that's what college interns are for. ;)

effing lazy people at work grind my gears. Do not ask me to do something that would take you 5 seconds, when we have the same job. you cannot possibly be "too busy" when I hear you chatting with your co-workers, and it LITERALLY would take FIVE SECONDS. I have no sympathy for you, and I resent being asked to "help" someone who just doesn't feel like doing their job. also, you're probably "too busy" because you have the organizational skills of a 2 year old.

times like this are a nice reminder that I should never, ever go into management.

Stop and go traffic is why I stopped buying manuals years ago. I had to drive to/from work just outside the DC Beltway in a 5 speed light pick-up, that cured me of wanting manuals for my every day cars.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Until my current vehicle, I'd only ever had cars with manual transmissions. While it's rare that I have to drive into Mpls, those times I did gave me great pause to reconsider my transmission.

I lived in Severna Park and worked in Lanham, just outside the beltway, just off 50, had to drive in on 50.:(

one reason I like the manual transmission is that my son cannot borrow it... ;) (just kidding!) though I've offered to teach him multiple times.

I had to bring the car into a dealer for an air bag recall recently, and when I came back to pick it up, the customer service rep had to find someone else to drive it for her, as she didn't know how to drive one. Kind of weird for a service department person at an auto dealer not to know how to drive a manual transmission, eh?


I still chuckle at the first time I drove one. I had to borrow a pickup truck in college to pick up food for 35 people. It took me five or six stalls to get out of the parking space*, then I was rolling down the street, feeling proud of myself, came up to a stop sign, stopped...and stalled again as I used the brake but not the clutch. :o

After that though it was smooth sailing and by the time I got back I really liked it.



* put it in first, leap forward and bump the car in front of me, stall. Start the engine, put it in reverse, leap backward and bump the car behind me, stall. Repeat as needed while turning the steering wheel frantically each time.

I had my mom's manual Scion tC for a while when I was in college just outside NYC. She had knee surgery and couldn't drive it, so we swapped. I had gone to Princeton for an SLU game, and caught MILES of traffic before the GWB. Quite a bit of uphill creeping, legs got a workout there, but only stalled once, IIRC.

If you're out of the office, for pete's sake, log off the company's IM. If I see someone marked 'away', I assume they are working, but not at their desk right now. Not that they're on vacation or asleep.

What do you do at work about a new person who's unwilling to learn? Because we have a new cart person at Sam's Club, and my boss is about ready to throat punch him.

Well, if they're a new employee for you, they're probably an old employee for someone else, and for a reason.

New guy is horrendous at closing. For my position, there are tasks that must be done when you close at night. We have tried to teach new guy how to do these tasks, and the teaching is not taking effect.

Well, worst comes to worse, the boss can always teach him the ultimate lesson and can his ***. Sam's club can always find somebody else.

At Sam's, you're brought in and evaluated for 90 days before you become permanent. No one thinks this guy will even make it to 90 days.

And they had ME talk to him today, as if that would have an effect. He nodded, but the proof is in the pudding. If I continue to hear horror stories, I will have my boss put me on closing until we find someone who can handle it.
