Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

Was primed to type this myself. "Be the change you wish to see in the world." -Ghandi

I recently joined a big firm, much larger than I am used to. Their directory structure is the worst I've ever seen. Impossible to find stuff unless someone directs you to it. And then without a direct link to follow it could be ten or twelve clicks to get to the folder you need, just ridiculous. I'm debating whether I want to try and get it changed to something that makes sense or just look for different job.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

Start changing the culture. Go ahead and schedule the meeting, then when someone responds that they are busy at that time, ask why it didn't show on Outlook. Keep at it, someone needs to start the change. If you can get any management support, get them to keep on the yahoos who don't keep the schedule up to date. It's a tool and it needs to be used to be useful.

We have the same problem. I usually reply "My Outlook calendar is updated with my availability" when asked when I'm available for a meeting. I have co-workers that don't even set their Out of Office reply when they're gone. I can see if you're out sick, you're not going to log on just to change it - but for planned absences, it's very annoying. It's not that hard to update the calendar, especially if it's a repeatable event.

The "scheduling assistant" feature can be really helpful when trying to organize a meeting among several people. It shows you each person's time slots for the entire day, so that you can see what is already blocked out and what might be open. Our system is set up so that we can even schedule a conference room for the meeting too! (the conference rooms are all treated for this purpose as if they were "people" too).

One odd thing about scheduling through Outlook calendars, though (it doesn't grind my gears yet it is disorienting). I will have meetings mysteriously appear and disappear and move around on my calendar, and I don't check it that often, only once or twice a day (thank goodness for automatic reminders!).

This is exactly the way we set ours up. The rooms are just other people to invite, though you have to be sure a room is set to not be able to accept overlapping meetings. The fun thing about this is you can also schedule regular maintenance or meeting prep by inviting the room to a meeting with Facilities called, say, "Set up projector and establish VRC."

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

I always ask because it's not that I can't view your calendar or interpret it, it's that some people don't like meetings back-to-back, they might be in a different building across the site, or they may have a bunch of work to do that day and can only attend extremely important meetings.

When I get a snarky reply back like, "My calendar is up to date" I just roll my eyes. I'm trying to be courteous and accommodate special instructions that almost no one adds to their calendars*. I try to ask it in a way that preempts this, "I looked at your calendar and wanted to double check you're available for this."

*I actually do this. I add notes to appointment titles like "Available for meetings" or "Do not schedule over"; otherwise I add 15-30-minute "busy" appointments before and after meetings to prevent having them crammed over one another, but I'm the rare exception.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

I really want to play fantasy football but don't have the time to make a season long commitment. If only there was something that goes week to week that I can decide when I want to play. But no one would ever come up with an idea like that.

:rolleyes::p

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

Just about time for my semi-annual rant about UN Week and how all the corrupt dictators from around the world take over the streets of Midtown Manhattan, making life miserable for everyone else...and this time it will coincide with a visit from Pope Francis. The police have already announced that they are closing almost all of Midtown to vehicular traffic, which implies that they are expecting the streets to be teeming with people, making it just about impossible for anyone actually to get anywhere.

If you were thinking of going to Manhattan for any reason other than to see the Pope next Thursday or Friday, you might want to pick a different day...

I've been playing FFL for 25 years now, and even I am sick of the Fan Duel/Draft Kings ads. My God, are they annoying.

They're the real-life version of the ads from Idiocracy. They're really loud, fast, and completely designed for the lowest common denominator.

Cajuns in their fishing boats stopped in the middle of a bridge.

Apparently 600' long and 54' wide steel bearing down on them doesn't scare them until it's about 200' away. But hey, they waved to me as I passed!

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

We do code pushes to production on Thursday nights. We have a rule that all updates must be tested in the test environment, and sent to the sys admins by the start of the 4 PM Wednesday update review meeting, or else it either has to wait until next week, or a separate emergency change ticket has to be created (for true emergencies only). Last week, one of our business analysts came up to me on Thursday morning and said, "Oh, I forgot to mention, we need to do X update for this customer, they're expecting it this week. It's been tested and everything, I just forgot to include it on the list yesterday." I told him it would require an emergency change on Friday instead. That was fine.

This week, 20 minutes before the 4 PM Wednesday meeting begins, he sends me an update that "must go this week", then retracts it 10 minutes later. At this point, I asked his boss to "please address these last minute additions & subtractions" with him, because they are frustrating for the sys admin team to keep track of. I probably should have left it at that, because his boss did respond and said he would take care of it (which I later found out he did, first thing this morning), but today I arrive, and this BA is asking to remove something else that was added to the change ticket the day before.

I responded as tactfully as I could without having any caffeine in my system yet. I summarized it with, "C, this is the third time in the last week you've asked for an 11th hour addition/subtraction. Could you please help us understand why this is happening, and determine what we can do to avoid this as a team going forward?" As soon as I hit send, I realized I was probably going to regret it, having gone a little above my pay grade.

Hour later, drive-by b*tching from his boss. "Would you stop sending out these *ing public blasts singling out members of my team? Etc. etc."

We settled it in short order, but I still think it was worth the p155ing match. ;)

11th hour changes, so much fun. In a perfect world, management would have clear understanding of the Agile process...

Locking down the process doesn't sound to me to be very agile. ;)

Some of us analysts would here these change requests from the business about making a certain function a necessity. We would tell them what that would entail, and they'd come back with something else. It often becomes a game of wheedling down this new scope to the point where it's a minor tweak. Then we'll go to the PM with this request and sort of home to get told that it's not possible due to the CR lock for implementation and that it would be a future release item.

It's odd for where I work. We strive for Agile development, but we're hamstrung by the auditors because we're a division of a large bank. We can't omit anything in our requirements documentation, which might require a BA a day or two to complete before a developer can review and give the yea or nay response to then go develop it. Management has created this paradox out of fear of both internal and government audits, and then gets irritated at the project team for taking longer than they think it should take to develop an application and they can't make amendments to their wanted features when there's still a month to release date.
