Gaza 2023: The Next Episode

I didn't know anyone *made* pagers anymore, encrypted or no.

One-way pagers are still very much in use for their simplicity and reliability. Physicians and first responders can use them when cellular networks are down, and to cut down on the distraction from constant notifications and robocalls on a cell phone. They can also be used in places where cell phones are prohibited, like SCIFs and prisons.

Terror groups likely would use them because they don't utilize cell networks and therefore cannot have the wearer's location quickly triangulated by law enforcement.

Here’s proof that it doesn’t matter how targeted they get. You’re going to be mad anyway.

I'm of three minds here
1. I think this was extremely targeted and while I feel awful for any innocents that were hurt or killed, there's always going to be that risk. It is impossible to eliminate that risk without the utopian dream of world peace.
2. It makes me even angrier about Israel leveling 50% of all buildings in gaza
3. What happens when the Chinese do this to our iPhones in preparation for Taiwan

Killed an 8-year old girl. I'm sure she was Muslim, though, so terrorist.

Sorry Kep, but I'm with state of hockey on this one. This was extremely targeted, and there will always be some collateral casualties, but this at least minimized impact on innocents.

But maybe you'd prefer expanded carpet bombing instead, because that never leads to innocents being hurt.

Finally, someone with some balls.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Bernie Sanders is preparing several resolutions that would stop more than $20 billion in U.S. arms sales to Israel, a longshot effort but the most substantive pushback yet from Congress over the devastation in Gaza ahead of the first year anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war.

In a letter to Senate colleagues on Wednesday, Sanders said the U.S. cannot be “complicit in this humanitarian disaster.” The action will force a vote as soon as next week to block the arms sales to Israel, though majority passage is highly unlikely.

“Much of this carnage in Gaza has been carried out with U.S.-provided military equipment,” Sanders, I-Vt., wrote.

While it’s doubtful the politically split Senate would pass the measures, the vote tally will be designed to send a message to the Netanyahu regime that its war effort is eroding the U.S.’s longtime bipartisan support for Israel. Sanders said he is working with other colleagues on the measures.

Watching a video of one of the devices going off, it seems like the amount of explosive was actually pretty limited. People standing within 2-3 feet were unharmed. A ginsu bomb has more collateral damage than this.

yeah - I'm assuming it puts a hole in the attached human juuuuuuust large enough for him to bleed out.

When you guys first started posting this (which is where I first heard about), I thought it was some kind of "eating pet dogs and cats" type hoax. Mindblowing they can pull this off.

And here I thought the Stuxnet virus was amazing enough, the Israelis pull this off.

And those asking what does this, which in the end is limited damage, prove -- think of it more as psychological warfare, very similar to how Israel assassinates people in Iran of all places. The fact that this can even happen, never mind the sophistication of pulling this off, sends the message from Israel to their enemies -- we can get you wherever, however you are; always sleep with one eye open.

In any country in the Middle East I am always for whatever causes maximal casualties.

Interesting. I can only find mine along the groin. Worth noting I have exceptionally thick thigh muscles, which might explain my assumption.

We could probably quibble of where the thigh vs groin start, but typically the thigh is from hip down (distal to inguinal ligament). The femoral artery does dive deeper in the thigh, but proximally, especially where a belt sits, it is fairly superficial.
