Game Thread 1/28....Scores and such....

Re: Game Thread 1/28....Scores and such....

Dan -- I agree 1000% with your comments about the CCC crowd.
The students are about the only group that make any consistent noise. Most act like they are attending a funeral.
Cheer ONLY when a SNC goal is scored.
I have said this before: "Success has bred complacency at the CCC".
To your point Toe Blake: There are numerous promotions that could be developed (without huge costs) to draw more people to the games.
Why not try to fill it up a couple times a season?? We can only hope.....

OK...what do you guys have in mind as far as promotions go? I'm all ears. E-mail me directly if you prefer. (By the way, I gauge my level of crowd noise by the simple playing of The Bud Song. If no one can even muster the energy to clap - which most don't - with the game on the line, then that is pretty sad.)

As for the paper, I think we do get pretty good media coverage with a Division I basketball program and USHL team in the same town at the same time. And, oh yeah, the Yankees of the NFL are up the road too. The better they do, the worse our crowds seem to get. Also, the physical size of the paper has shrunk by 25 percent over the last five years and we've also lost a daily paper in the last decade. Not saying it's right, that's just the current state of the media today. Hockey also gets a preview capsule every weekend in the Friday paper, which is something basketball here doesn't get with two pretty successful programs.

Also, I don't think you'll ever see the nets come down. Remember two things: 1 - It is not a St. Norbert-owned facility, and 2 - It is a litigious society we live in. If the nets come down and someone gets whacked, an ambulance chaser would have a field day with that. Not going to happen. Again - not saying I agree with it, but it's not going to change. Those nets were also there 5-7 years ago when the CCC was packed every night. The nets can't be the reason people are staying away lately.

I will send you my suggestions this week. I have six ideas already....

It's ironic you say this about SNC because Norwich is experiencing similiar issues this season.

Attendance has been noticeably down this year at Kreitzberg.

The good news is the season ticket holders are still 1000 strong and there is still a waiting list, so the seats are sold, the people just aren't showing up and sitting in them. So, Norwich hasn't been hurt finanically in that sense. It also makes it tough to come up with ways on filling those seats to make the arena look more full.

However, the number of empty seats at the games is alarming considering the success of the team this year. The only game that Kreitzberg has been rocking this year was the Castleton game and there was a legitimate crowd of 2200+ here that night.

Other than that, the Plattsburgh crowd and Middlebury crowd have to be viewed as disappointing.

Other factors that have probably hurt a little bit have been the increased admission price (went up $1 because of Vermont sales tax), lack of NESCAC schools on the schedule and 4 p.m. starts on Saturdays.

4 p.m. on a Saturday is a tough sell to a new fan looking to bring a family to a game in my opinion. Just way too much stuff going on that time of day during the winter months, whether it be ramming your kids around their sports schedules or going skiing for the day etc. Over the last few years, Norwich has averaged 200 or so fans better on Friday nights than Saturday afternoons.

I think some of it is the schedule. We've replaced games against NESCAC schools with extra games against the likes of UNE, St. Mikes, etc. It think that even Tufts and Conn College are a better draws than UNE. The fact that the Middlebury game was in the "Middle" of the week, and that Middlebury isn't very good this year had a lot to do with the lousy attendance last Tuesday. I think there are lots of factors involved, but lackluster opposition has to be part of it. Don't ask me why the Plattsburgh crowd wasn't as big as usual. Possibly because we used to play them after Christmas, and this year it was before?

Re: Game Thread 1/28....Scores and such....

Norwich Attendance
Norwich has implemented a plan to ask season thicket holders to donate their individual game tickets back to the university for resale if they can not attend a game. How has this been working out? Is there still a season holder ticket waiting list? Since your ticket is scanned when you enter the game I would believe the ticket office should be able to determine which season ticket holders are not attending a majority of the games or at least not donating their tickets back for resale. These people should be targeted to turn in their season tickets so people on the waiting list can become season ticket holders.:(

Prez I just check out the box score for the Bowdoin/Amherst game on 1-6-2012-attendence 412 for two of the best teams in the NESCAC. On attendence at Norwich I think there are a few factors to consider-maybe in the old days they just added all the season tickets sold plus the single game sold to = attendance. In fact as you point out not all of the season tickets holders show up for every game. Maybe they just want to support Norwich hockey which is a good thing.

Also the cost of gas has gone up to the $3.50+ range and just guess what it would cost to drive a truck from Burlington, WRJ, or Marshfield to Northfield for a game. The economy is also not very good in Vermont. A lot of the good construction jobs went away because of the downturn in the housing market. All these factors play into low attendence. However you could do a promotion like Dartmouth and guess the time it takes for the Zamboni to resurface the ice. Irving gives out these gas/fuel cards to the winner.

Re: Game Thread 1/28....Scores and such....

start some new rivalries, rivalry games always increase attendance. If Norwich were to start scheduling Oswego I know I'd make the drive for that and I'm sure I'm not alone there.

Re: Game Thread 1/28....Scores and such....

As a season ticket holder since the inception of the program, I have donated my two tickets back to the school for their use as they see fit. In watching the games on NSN I've noticed many times that my two seats are vacant. I don't believe that any season ticket holder should be forced to turn in his ticket if not being used. Could it be that sale of standing room tixs suppliments revenue already received by the University? Perhaps a seating plan can be dispalyed for "available" seating for those SRO ticketholders who would want to sit. BTW, there are also a lot of season ticket holders that prefer to stand on the rail and/or walk around so that they can see the team from the offensive end each period. Let's not bemoan the attendance numbers while you are still putting 1,000 plus in the stands every game. Plus, if the parking situation was better a lot more people would be willing to go. Listening/watching home games on radio and NSN must also be impacting attendance.
