Future of the ccha????

Re: Future of the ccha????

What is your reasoning for thinking Tech

No way it would be us. Denver's grandiose visions of filling Magness every night don't fit us, and to Jackson and Blasi, a trip to Houghton is equivalent to an extra jaunt to Duluth or Grand Forks. If the Motel 6 really is chasing a Versus contract, the Houghton/Hancock micropolitan area isn't exactly a way to sell that. Finally, the split proves that the MacNaughton Cup is obviously not that big of a deal to this new conference, so it's not going to be much of a deal-maker.

If Western is a no-go, they'll invite St. Cloud, but this discussion is moot anyway. If ND comes, they have the bargaining power to ensure that Western will be coming with them to moderate ND and Miami's travel a bit.

You do know that Tech bailed on us once?

I thought that D-II hockey was "frozen", that no more teams would be added and the last few existing teams encouraged to
convert to D1 or DIII........am I smoking sumptin'????

Western Michigan has launched a website showing that is really trying to get into the Super Conference.

Their first season above .500 since 2002 and they think they have a chance at being in the super Conference?

First trip back to the NCAA's since 1996.

They haven't posted a back to back winning season since 01-02.

Their *ing website "Why Western" doesn't even SHOW any photos from a game. And only ONE photo of the *ing hockey team (which is during practice).

And of their "notable" alumni, they pick three guys who I'm pretty sure have never uttered the letters W, M, and U in the same sentence upon leaving Kalamazoo.

They're grasping at straws.

Re: Future of the ccha????

Meh, at least the President is telling them to try. Bailey would have shut the program down already. I think they're trying to follow the Miami "path", but started 5 years too late.

It's great to see the new commitment given to the WMU hockey program by the current administration. Judi Bailey was never going to give you extra nickel one for certain. I did find interesting how Beauregard is pushing the idea that they want Western to go wherever Notre Dame ends up. That is a possibility if it is within the new conference, but I can't see Hockey East accepting Western. HE was heretofore a bus league with a limited number of hotel nights. Flying to play at Notre Dame is one thing for those schools and to have the Irish return the favor. However, I'm not certain they want to add the expense of flying to Kalamazoo too, when the WMU brand isn't one likely to add extra bodies to their arenas or viewers to their TV screens.

I'm sure this is probably the top priority for the entire school WMU right now. But I expect that unless they're very careful, a site like this as it shows stark contrasts with other schools is likely to hurt their chances rather than help them.

I frankly still can't believe that SCSU didn't get an invite. It locks down central MN and gives inroads into the Twin Cities. The lack of an invite is betting on hopes that ND will still come through and want WMU cause of proximity.

Re: Future of the ccha????

Sounds like money is why SCSU isn't going. MnSCU budget issues, having to fundraise to save football, firing teachers, budget cutbacks, dropping the aviation program...
Severe money problems for St. Cloud

Top priority? No way it's football first and look how they failed there. The the new medical school, then baseball. There is an interesting political twist to how things are happening in the SW part of MI.

I was thinking the same thing the other day, I mean come on why would they get the invite; up until last year they were terrible. Sorry WMU I am a fan of your team but I just don't think you should go. I also don't think any other CCHA teams should go.

Because they are a D-I school which has made a major financial commitment to its program. It's budget is no long in the NMU range, it's much closer to the Ohio State/ Notre Dame range.

(I'm fully acknowledging that the following has no bearing on motives of individual schools that explains why the "Motel 6" conference is forming. I'm taking a broader perspective to look at the college landscape as a whole)

I was secretly hoping that if there was going to be some mass shift in the landscape of western college hockey, it was going to more or less follow the lines of existing conferences (the MAC schools in the CCHA sticking together, the NSIC schools in the WCHA sticking together).

Having fewer schools in more conferences is (theoretically) good for the sport in the long term. The smaller schools have a greater chance of making the NCAAs (good for engaging with local fans), and there are open spots in the conferences (for new teams) that don't exist right now.

With that latter benefit in mind, it's a lot easier to try to convince a MAC school to start a program (or reinstate, as is that case at Kent State or Ohio) if all of the other MAC schools are in a conference that they can join. WMU and BGSU can lobby all they want, but without Miami there, the expected value isn't there as much.

You could say the same about NSIC schools that might want to look at starting a program (like MSU-Moorhead or Minot State are rumored to be interested in doing)... sure they could join the reduced WCHA, but it's not nearly as fun for them if UMD isn't around.
