Future Frozen Four sites

Re: Future Frozen Four sites

Traditional west/midwest bids would be somewhere in Minnesota and Michigan. Are venues in those states putting in bids? Is there something scaring off potential bidders?

Yes, to both of your questions. Also, the NCAA has been scared off by some of the bidders.

I wonder if the the Xcel Engery Center cost to much for the University of Minnesota. I am guessing it cost more to use that arena compared to arena that holds around 10,000.

I think that has more to do with the frozen four next year and final four the year after so Minn didn't bid this round.

Re: Future Frozen Four sites

Last time we were a #1 seed.

Rochester was far from a good venue. I don't know if it was the 2pm start on Friday, the fact that we completely outplayed UMass but couldn't score, or the fact that the "facelift" that they put on the Blue Cross Arena wasn't even lipstick on a pig. The pregame at the Dinosaur BBQ was worth it though. Rochester, Syracuse, and Albany all have arenas capable of hosting regionals but they seem to have gravitated the east regional toward New England. Bridgeport is at least a nice arena, even if the Islanders play there.

Re: Future Frozen Four sites

Must have been for an on-campus regional. Schlossman reported that there were no other off-campus bids in the West and Midwest outside of Sioux Falls/Fargo and Allentown.

Could be. But it would be the first time they haven't bid in decades then.

I've read multiple reports that the Penn State/Allentown bid was the only bid submitted at all for the Midwest regional.

Thanks, that's what I was assuming then. Can't force traditional places like Minnesota and Michigan to host if they don't want to. So maybe what needs to be looked at is why these other places aren't bidding. What can be done to make them more likely to bid etc

Re: Future Frozen Four sites

The obvious answer is there are not enough appropriately sized neutral venues close enough to the schools that would host.

Re: Future Frozen Four sites

Then we either go forward with North Dakota trying to host every year and Pennsylvania being the "midwest" or the system gets an overhaul. Which is more likely?

It'll take awhile, but eventually I think we'll see the latter win out.

It's happening right now with the conference tournaments. At some point I expect the NCHC to go the way of the WCHA and B1G and go on-campus.

People are not going to travel great distances to see their team play in a regional. It's expensive. It's on tv, or streaming. It's short notice.

Regionals work in the densely populated Northeast where a large number of the teams are located within a half day's drive of every possible regional site, but it won't work for everyone west of Penn State.

Well I think the rules need to change and the NCAA needs to expect less $ to allow other venues to host.

Here is my breakdown of neutral venues:
CO: Denver, Loveland
ND: Fargo
SD: Sioux Falls, Rapid City
NE: Omaha, <strike>Ralston</strike>, Lincoln, <strike>Kearney</strike>
MN: St Paul, <strike>Theif River Falls</strike>, Minneapolis
IA: Sioux City, <strike>Waterloo</strike>, Des Moines, <strike>Urbandale</strike>, <strike>Dubuque</strike>, <strike>Cedar Rapids</strike>
WI: Madison, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Milwaukee
MO: St Louis, Independence
IL: Moline, Rockford, Rosemont, Bloomington, Chicago
MI: Kalamazoo, Muskegon, Grand Rapids, <strike>Plymouth</strike>, Saginaw, <strike>Flint</strike>, Detroit
OH: Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Columbus, Youngstown
IN: Indianapolis, Fort Wayne
PA (Apparently): <strike>Johnstown</strike>, Reading, Allentown, Hershey, Wilke-Barre, Erie, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia
WV: Wheeling

Did I miss anything? Now how many of those are near a university?

EDITS: Updated to reflect building I previously listed that are below the 5000 capacity requirement (struck through) and changed the "too big" arenas to underlined.
