First off, for those of you who don't know, "mode" is the value that showed up the most. So, for example, Minnesota was voted in 1st more than they were voted in any other position. Wisconsin was voted in 3rd more than any other position. Etc.

Wow. There is no consensus on this list at all. Only three teams -- three! -- made everyone's top ten: Minnesota, Harvard, and Wisconsin. Even Harvard is ranked anywhere from #2 to #8

Like most of the polls that have come out pretty much all of them have the top 5 the same, but after that it's a total mess.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this shakes out. Hockey everybody! Can you believe it?! It's finally here!

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

There was a Clarkson #1 vote in the USCHO poll as well, and I can respect that position. I've thought the same myself in many years. If a team wins the top spot on the ice, shouldn't they lose it on the ice as well? The only thing with Clarkson this year is that it is hardly the same team that it was in March. Still, I have no problem with any voter putting the Golden Knights atop the preseason poll.

For that reason, I've always thought it was dumb that the pre-season polls often mimic the end of season polls. It's lazy.

It's not like its the NHL where teams are often largely the same, or have typically made trades for roughly equivalent players that better suit their needs.

The D1 teams happen to have the same names but are not at all the same teams, averaging 25% or sometimes even more turnover. Clarkson is possibly worst hit of all this season with no returning Olympians, huge graduation losses both in numbers and impact, and only a decent rather than exceptional incoming class. With only 54 goals scored from returning players, they actually have 18 other teams ahead of them....not to mention the fact that they'll also have a rookie in net.

Clarkson will do well to earn a place in the top 10 by season end.

Totally agree with you on Clarkson. I left them off my Top 10 all together.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Alright I'll get this party started for week 2 of the Posters Poll

1) Boston College
2) Minnesota
3) Wisconsin
4) Harvard
5) Cornell
--gap--
6) Boston University
7) North Dakota
8) Northeastern
9) Clarkson
10) Mercyhurst

No changes as the only one of my top 10 that played was Wisconsin. I am a bit worried, though, at how thoroughly they slaughtered Lindenwood even without several top players. I almost moved them up a spot. Is Lindenwood supposed to be worse this year, or...?

Lindenwood has a new coach, so it will be a little bit of an unknown quantity early on, especially after only a week of practice. However, Bemidji State did okay under similar circumstances. Anyway, the Lions have a very good goalie and they try hard, but Wisconsin is on a whole other plane as far as talent goes. And to answer your unasked question, yes, the Badgers have a very good shot at winning it all this year.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

To be fair (not that I like to be fair to BU) but they were missing their, what, 4 or 5 best players?

And to be fair we're talking about exhibition games...but if you have a chance to take a shot at the cardinal and white, you take it :).

That tie to UConn really blew you away enough to move up UMD 2 spots, eh?

I didn't know UConn was held in such high regard out west
