Frozen Four - Where to Eat? Drink? Must See Stuff

Re: Frozen Four - Where to Eat? Drink? Must See Stuff

Also, visit The Black Rose at the base of the old Custom House Tower (now a Marriott Residence Inn) for great chowder, draft beer, irish whiskey, and live music.

fyp... :)

I wouldn't say "vastly".

He might be referring to the "feel" of the place since they've taken down the overhead Green Line, as opposed to the actual establishments that are there...if you don't go regularly it is still somewhat striking the way everything appears more "open."

Re: Frozen Four - Where to Eat? Drink? Must See Stuff

The North End is not overrated! You make it sound like it's the Epcot Center. I will agree that it can get crowded but there is a reason for this. And, if the natives go can't be all bad. And I have been to Trattoria Toscana before Sox games. A very tiny place with good food and good service. But . . . a bit away.

I wouldn't say "overrated" either. The way I would put it is stay away from the "famous" places and find the lesser known ones. When I was a student all I heard about was "Polcari's" in the North End. You would think, the way people described it, that one has never eaten a meal until they have gone there. So I finally went...it was overpriced and mediocre. When I started asking people who either lived there or had been there frequently, they told me where the good places were and I have not been disappointed whenever I have ventured there.

Re: Frozen Four - Where to Eat? Drink? Must See Stuff

Great info in this thread. I'm staying at the Boston Marriott in Cambridge and got a price through my business that I'm almost embarrassed to take. I'm definitely going to take up some of the Cambridge suggestions.

Ice cream at Toscanini's is a good decision, right down the street in Central Square. I'm partial to the burnt caramel, but everything there is good. Be mindful the alcoholic flavors have actual non-cooked-off alcohol in them and will get you intoxicated.

The North End is selectively overrated. Walk down Hanover, enjoy the atmosphere, then eat on a side street for the better food and dessert. :)

Is the NCAA charging admission to the Hobey Baker Award ceremony this year? Saw no mention of price in material I have.

Re: Frozen Four - Where to Eat? Drink? Must See Stuff

jacob wirth's is a 20 minute walk minimum from causeway street. and that is at a brisk pace.
but good.
i stop there for lunch once every couple weeks and get the fried chicken blt with onion rings while sitting at the bar and watching espn.

the only place i ever go nowadays for food in the north end is galleria umberto. they do lunch only and they are open until they run out of food. the potato balls are mookie's favorites. walking in there reminds mookie of the italian hall of his youth in monessen pa :D (and probably the same here since the 1970s too!) it's on the southeast side of hanover street in the first block as you leave the downtown area.

Reasonable walking distance, maybe I should have asked where the best puddin' was

then moo as mentioned. 10 minutes behind the state house from the garden on beacon st.

re North End
no kidding. Terramia on Salem.. another nice place.

Re: Frozen Four - Where to Eat? Drink? Must See Stuff

Where can I get a good steak or seafood near garden?

Best steak - while its a chain restaurant (and a bit $$$) - Ruth's Chris has amazing steak. Address is 45 School Street which is about a 10-15 min walk to the Gahdin. It is also across the street from the Omni Parker hotel where the Boston Creme Pie was first created.

Seafood - people have already mentioned Legal Seafood - there are several locations depending on where you are staying. Closest one to the Gahdin is near the Aquarium on the waterfront.

Masamino's is the closest to the Garden, but it is a tiny place, maybe 50 seats tops. Four of us had dinner there before Hockey East final, all different. No one was disappointed. And they even have Dogfish 60 Minute in a bottle, a surprise.

Re: Frozen Four - Where to Eat? Drink? Must See Stuff

Going to give a plug to a hidden gem called Porter's Bar and Grille. This is located on Portland Street right around the corner from The Harp. It is steps away from the Garden and it is usually overlooked because it is half way down the block and not on the corner. In other words, it will not be as crowded as The Harp, Tavern, Fours, etc. Burgers are very good and they also have a decent selection of beer.

I have no affiliation with the place, but ended up going there when I could not get into the Harp during the Hockey East Championship. Was pleasantly surprised.

Lot of good steak places - Smith & Wollensky's, Abe & Louie's, the Capital Grille. All in the Back Bay. You can drop a big dime in places like that but, hey, you're on vacation.

I was hoping no one would mention the place because it's where I go before every Garden event. Very good steak tip plates, good selection of beers, and not the usual drinking crowd. Although this is the FF, so you never know.

Re: Frozen Four - Where to Eat? Drink? Must See Stuff

I'm sure many of these suggestions have been mentioned, but I'm too lazy to read through it all.

Italian food: Giacomo's. There are 2 locations, the North End and down Tremont St in the south End. Only the South End one takes reservations, which you'd have to call for now if you want to go. I recommend the butternut squash ravioli, it's dynamite.
Mexican food: Zocalo's in Back Bay. Bets guacamole I've ever had, top notch sangria and margaritas as well.
Pastries: Mike/modern in the North End. I prefer Mike's b/c they are larger, but both are solid choices.

If you go to the Newbury St area to shop, Newbury has a Shake Shack, and Boylston has Boston burger Company if you're in a burger mood. BBC has the best in the city, IMO.

Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall area for tourist shops/a wide array of food options. Mija is a solid tequila bar located right there as well.

Highly recommend seeing an improv show. Improv Asylum is in the North End, Improv Boston is out in Cambridge. I prefer IB both both are top notch shows.

tourist-y things to do: Freedom Trail, Guided historical tour of boston, Prudential Center for $$$hopping, Museum of fine arts, Museum of Science.

Enjoy your time in Boston. Hope to see plenty of hockey sweaters around that weekend!

I don't believe so. No one on the Matthews event team I've spoken to has mentioned a price either.
