Frozen 4 site selections?

Re: Frozen 4 site selections?

With any luck, I might be able to organize an "USCHO golf invitational" in Tampa for 2014. I would imagine there would possibly be interest for that during the off day.
...
Not sure how much interest there would be, since most fans will be in Philadelphia in 2014.;)

Heh. Well, maybe I'll organize one for a practice run ;) In all seriousness, there are a bunch of pretty nice courses around here, although most are outside of downtown Tampa by 30-40 minutes. Regardless, if the interest is there in a couple years, I'd be glad to set something up.

Re: Frozen 4 site selections?

For those of us who like to plan ahead, have they announced the dates for these games? In particular, the FF in Tampa. I like to book my hotel early :)

The dates will probably be the same as what they have been in previous years, always the weekend after the Final Four.

Re: Frozen 4 site selections?

Jim, there are bad parts of chicago. Facts are facts. God forbid someone point out that the united center isn't in the best location. Lighten up.

Re: Frozen 4 site selections?

So basically there's black people in the area around the United Center, got it.
Maybe you do, maybe you don't. Other than the obvious spike on the sarcasm meter, I don't know how to read your post.

If you're saying you'll attend the Chicago FF without hesitation, fully expecting a safe and excellent time, then yes, you've gotten the most important memo. That is indeed the bottom line. But when planning a trip anywhere, having more detailed information is very helpful, especially for newcomers. Maybe you're the rare guy who's streetwise in all 50 states, I dunno. But the rest of us can make good use of travel advice.

Since it's the question of race that triggered your reaction, let's toss another factoid or two into the mix on that subject. (actually a clarification from my earlier post.) Simply as a matter of demographic fact, Chicago is an unusually segregated city. That inevitably causes some tensions, which is a shame on many levels. And yes, there are some areas that outsiders should avoid. Anyone with a brain will tell you that, regardless of color. But one silver lining is that the stable, integrated areas that do exist can be very desirable neighborhoods. That's already the case in Chicago's Hyde Park. The Near West Side seems to be moving nicely in that direction. Now, if someone was planning a first trip into the area, wouldn't that be both relevant and comforting to know? I say yes -- particularly when the same neighborhood had a different reputation back in the final years of the Stadium.

Granted, our nation doesn't handle the subject of race particularly well. And maybe those of us on this thread are also falling short. But I do know that acting like a Gong Show host at the mere mention of race isn't the answer; it's part of the problem.

Re: Frozen 4 site selections?

Wow. The Flyers @ Blackhawks game is about to start. I wonder if any of the ~20,000 fans in attendance will make it home alive.

Re: Frozen 4 site selections?

Time is on Chicago's side. The owners of the United center have a plan to add an entertainment complex to the UC. The complex would be built all with private money on a adjacent parking lot. It would include several restaurants, bars, and some shopping. Hopefully this would help gentrify the surrounding area. Give people a reason to stay and spend money on something other than the game.

Nothing is agreed upon though. The idea was floated in 2012 but no actual progress yet. Rumor is there are negotiations over tax breaks and maybe whether the city can get them to pay for a new nearby el train station.

It would be ideal if this gets traction and is done in tome for the FF, but who knows.

All the regulars will, with no difficulty at all. With just a tiny sprinkle of good advice, all the tourists and newbies will be just fine too.:)

Good catch. I've been meaning to post a article on this plan for a while, but have been lazy. Glad you took care of it.

If this proposed addition becomes a reality, the UC will mesh much better with the Frozen Four. In fact the UC would become an almost perfect host. Here's to hoping the project is approved and can be completed in time for the FF. I do, however, have my doubts. There are obviously many political hurdles to overcome. As far as I know there's been no real breakthrough in the last year.

Also, what does the high desirability of the proposal tell you? That for the most part, the bars/restaurants/retail that you'd hope to find next to an NHL arena don't currently exist at the UC -- as we've been discussing. Part of me says that the NCAA should have held off on a Chicago FF until the facility is built. But the bid has been awarded, so all we can do now is hope for the best.

Mostly local fans make up that crowd. But the FF fans are tough. We survived Detroit. I checked up on the area around the United Center. It is not in a "bad" area. In 2010, it was named the "worst" neighborhood for crime in the country. That was a few years back so I'm sure it's like Disneyland now.

Just curious, could you post a link to that article? I would just like to know what they defined as the area around the UC... The immediate area around the arena is fine... I've walked from the West End Bar/Grill to Hawks games about 20 times in the past few seasons... Never had a problem... The problems are if you go West of the UC... And even then it's 1-1.5 miles before you start getting into "trouble" areas... The "Problem Area" doesn't include the parking lots or anywhere that a FF patron would be going... There are no resturants/bars/other hangouts in that direction...

What are you saying, that if fans avoid the black people, they'll be just fine? Is that the advice you mean? Sorry, at least I had the stones to come out and say it

/end sarcasm

With any luck, I might be able to organize an "USCHO golf invitational" in Tampa for 2016. I would imagine there would possibly be interest for that during the off day.

Good selections made by the NCAA. Might have swapped the years for MN and Tampa, but otherwise, it should be a good 4 year stretch of places for the regulars to visit.

Tampa did a great job with the FF - put me down for golf!

I like it. The only thing missing from this thread is some idiot complaining that Omaha or Kansas City didn't make the cut because they now have an Applebee's downtown.

Clearly you've never been to Omaha. Tons of great local restaurants, it seems like Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives has been there a million times. I would love Omaha as a host, I have really enjoyed the time I've spent there, but I'm guessing since they host a much larger NCAA Championship event and the arena is just a touch too small, that they won't even bother to ever bid. The College World Series involves twice as many schools, almost all of which are BCS conference teams (ie most have large alumni bases), 5x as many games, and all games in recent years have averaged 20,000+. The Frozen Four would seem like small potatoes compared to that.

I like the Cities chosen and hope that I'm in a place where I can attend in Chicago and St. Paul.

Re: Frozen 4 site selections?

Disagree with Tampa.
Buffalo and Denver deserved a Bid before Tampa a second time.

Article on NBC.chicago.com. Like I said, from 2010
