Friars Hockey 23-24: Season-Long Thread of Pain

5 of 6 taken for the weekend is a successful one. On to two with UConn next weekend.
Yes, especially since the Friars actually won in regulation with 3.8 seconds left when a ref accidentally blew his whistle while the puck was never under control, (evidently he was out of position). Thank goodness PC won in OT, but that cost a league point and a reduced value win for pairwise purposes. Too bad that is not reviewable, but it could end up being a big deal. Great comeback by PC though, exactly how the coach wants his team to respond to falling behind. Keep grinding and play the game-plan, just what they did. Well done.

You are correct, New Friar. We had our seats down that end of the rink. Goaltender didn't have a handle on the puck when the whistle was blown. That was a really lousy call but great to see them get the win still. Good teams battle, bad teams fold like a cheap tent.

I was seated on the goal line on the bench side and saw the whole thing. The ref blew his whistle way too early, as the puck was still clearly in play. The refs often call goals on the ice that are later reviewed and overturned, so why shouldn't this be reviewable? Absolutely horrific call that cost PC a point at a time when they really need all of them.

It is reviewable if the coach calls for it with still a timeout left or if the referees determine it is close enough for a review. However, it would only be reviewable up until the whistle. Once the whistle blows the play stops so a review would not allow for anything beyond that point. Obviously the whistle was blown before entering the net and/or Providence did not have a timeout left or they knew it was useless to use it.

Same here, the ref toward the blue line had an unobstructed view and did not blow his whistle, but the ref behind the goal line blew his, even though his view of the puck was obstructed by the goalie so he really should not have done that. Hope he took responsibility for that when he told the coaches what happened. Right after the puck went in I thought the ref was emphatically signaling that it went in, but watching the ESPN+ replay at home later I could see that he was signaling the play dead. On that replay you could also see a UML player in the scrum at the goal line evidently saying the whistle blew so asking for that call. I assume the reason the call is not reviewable at that point is because the sound of the whistle could cause a defender to stop defending thus providing the chance for the offensive player to make a goal that he might have stopped. The entire sequence happened so fast that I believe the whistle could not have impacted that goal, but I would bet that is why the rule is what it is. Not sure why a review could hurt though, a right minded ref would have reversed his call in this case if he were allowed to.

The rule here is that play is dead when the referee close to the net loses sight of the puck. (Goalies love this and forwards hate it…but it helps both goalies). If the outside ref is certain that the puck is loose, he can yell to his partner “LOOSE, LOOSE”, and the inside ref can choose to believe him, but I never see that in the NCAA.

Also, “loses sight of the puck” happens a split second before the whistle blows. A ref can call”no goal” even when a puck goes in before a whistle, if, in the ref’s mind, play is dead because he lost sight of the puck and he is about to blow the whistle. This is absolutely not reviewable.

refs are human
and like I said, goalies love this.

Another big 6 points for the taking this weekend. UCONN is one of the teams PC is fighting for top 5 in league play to avoid the first round in HE game. Haven't followed UCONN much this year. Recent years they have been one of the older teams and with a number of foreign players.

It's a UCONN weekend for both hockey teams as the Women are at home Friday then at UCONN Saturday.

As for the local negative nancy, he's bashed ever PC coach going back since he was a kid :p

Pretty sure there is a way to block seeing his posts. I used to do that then he sort of went quiet may have to turn it back on again.

Good to see the news on top recruit Trevor Connolly after last night's crash into the net is good. Didn't look great when it happened.

Thanks for all these updates, hope this weekend goes well too. Could be a preview of our first round in the HE playoffs where teams 4 & 5 play each other. Like the way we are playing right now, but a little tough on my blood pressure.

The hit Trevor Connelly took is on video at Mark Divver’s twitter account, that was a dirty hook that threw him sideways into the net posts. Very surprised he is expected to play this weekend - maybe that is a positive sign about his resilience and determination. Can’t wait to see him next season. If that hit had happened at Schneider there certainly would have been more severe retaliation than the video shows.

If that was a hit in Hockey East play the refs would head to the monitor to review a goal instead.

Nice road win for the boys tonight. Strong showing and three important points gets them up to third in hockey east. I guess that's good.

Agree, that was a good road win, close match until the very ill advised major penalty against UConn resulted in 2 PC goals. Svedeback played a great game making a number of 5 bell saves, that made a big difference, especially early in the game. Glad Needham potted an extra insurance goal after coming back from the locker room after the needless hit. Hope to see a supportive crowd at Schneider tonight, especially students.

And PK doesn’t care. I’m like a new tv episode every week where he’s running the same episode a thousand times later.

Zlax gonna be hot tonight

Nothing to be hot about...just the start of the midseason slide as always. Five game losing streak is in play now with Maine and BU in back to back weekends. They will be lucky to get three points out of those four games.

They continue to take terrible shots and hitting goalies in the chest.

Last I saw The (dishonorable) Zlax45 was taking his slingshot to the BC thread in order to change the positive vibe there. Watch out if the Beanpot semi vs BU doesn’t go your way, he/she will be on the warpath. No worries if you win, the bad news will be delayed for the next opportunity to gloat. Once you get a “fan” like that there is no reason to hope for the best.
