Friars Hockey 23-24: Season-Long Thread of Pain

Well they got the second point tonight, last year they seemed to only come out of these ties with the 1 point.

Nate wasn't exactly happy with their play, seemed to be chasing the puck all night. Passing was a problem. Funny how some UNH fans thought their team didn't play well either. Maybe it was the style being played. Friars just seemed much slower than what we have seen early.

PK remains strong, but penalties continue to stress things. Little concerned about lack of scoring last 2 games. The transfer from Dartmouth dressed for Kiefiuk who is probably out for awhile with a broken finger. I don't believe Hubbardd played much. May was in for Centrella.

Richard made a big mistake on that PP that lead to the UNH shorthanded goal. Svedebak was good in this one, with some help from the pipes. Didn't feel the Friars had many really good chances at the other end.

Be interesting to see if any changes in tonight's lineup. Doesn't appear Nate is against moving people in and out especially the front line guys.

Good night for Villante scoring on the PP and the winner in the shootout.

Soccer playoff game at 4pm today parking could be a problem for hockey. Planning to go watch soccer game and grab some Saugys before hockey game.

5 points out of 6 against a ranked team in a home and away series is pretty darn good. Great puck luck on 1st goal as rebound on Richard’s shot bounced off the skate of a UNH defender back into the net. PC played with grit and determination the whole game and the hard work paid off. Defensive schemes make it difficult to score, and the current streak of 31 straight successful penalty kills must be extremely frustrating for the opponent. Svedeback is playing really well and seems to be getting better and better. Hope they can keep this up against tougher opponents but in the meantime this is a great start to the season.

Taking 5 of 6 points on the weekend is a great outcome for the Friars. I was anticipating a split but glad to be wrong. If UNH stays the course and contends for a tourney spot it will be pretty impressive as far as the balance of power in HE. Looking like it'll be in the running for most competitive conference over the season.

Nice OT win for the Friars. A tremendous 1st period zone time advantage but the puck just would not go in, (credit to the Notheastern goalie and the posts). Odd penalty after Duran’s goal in the last minute of the 1st period. If the only thing the ref across the ice saw was Yoder pointing at the NE bench that is a dumb application of the unsportsmanlike penalty. The Friars deserved the win, even if in OT, but they really looked especially good to me. Very disciplined defense and few bad decisions on when and where to pass to get the puck out of the zone. Great score in OT by Krys, all set up by a charge to the net by Yoder who is having a very good start of the season. Well deserved OT win I thought. Odd that giving up just one goal will slightly lower Svedeback’s goals against average, but the D giving up just 8 shots makes his GAA difficult to sustain. Good luck at Northeastern Sat.

Since losing Kiefiuk the team has had to juggle the lines and mix and match and it's caused some offensive dropoff on the score sheet where they've got no more than 2 goals a game with him out. That said, I think their passing game and just getting the puck around to best shot available is a good thing.

Congratulations to coach Leaman, winningest coach in PC history and accomplished in far less time!

Great start to the season continues, currently in 1st place in HEA. Will not be easier from here on out, but the team and coaches seem to have very good chemistry. Fun to watch.

HE is a blood bath. Selfishly, this needed to be a 6 pt weekend. Better than all the ties last year though.

Been thinking about the reason for the increase in tie games and the impact of the change in how points are awarded. The new protocol changes the way we need to evaluate this. Now if a game is tied in regulation time you have a 5 minute 3X3 OT period. If nobody scores in that 5 minute OT period the game is declared a T and an extra point is awarded based on the shootout winner. However, as soon as the game goes to OT each team is awarded a point. So if you win in the five minute OT period you get the W but you only get 2 points out of 3. So 2 wins is not automatically 6 points. In this case PC had a two game sweep of Northeastern, but one of the wins was in OT. In the past there was a 5 minute 5X5 sudden death OT period and if you scored in that first extra period you got a W and all the points. Except in end of year tournament play there was no additional OT and if the game was still tied after the 1st OT period the game ended as a tie and the teams would split the points. So getting a 2 game sweep in prior years would mean you got all the points even if one of those games was won in the extra period.

Just a note on prior to the change to 3on3. In regular season games it was 5 on 5 but for 5 mins not 20 mins. Only when it got to the playoffs did they go to 20 mins and multiple 20 mins until a team scored.

Thanks 73PCFriar, I fixed my post. I conflated the tournament OT format with the regular season format as far as the length of the OT. Not sure why I did that, perhaps it was because I had read that PC’s great start this year is the best since the 2015-2016 season when they started 12-0-3. That brought back memories of how good that team was. I did go to the Worcester, MA NCAA regional tournament when that PC team was the 1st seed and lost to 4th seed Min. Duluth in double OT in the opening game. I remember that game ended after a disputed call which I suspected was motivated by the refs wanting the game to end because it was the first game of a double header and the PC-UMD game had already lasted past the scheduled start time of the 2nd game because you had regular intermissions and full 2O minute OT periods. That was a loaded team with a number of terrific seniors who decided to play all four years and Nick Ellis who had a great year as goalie after being the backup the year before. If this year’s team is that good we are in for a treat.

Thanks for the heads up, sorry about the mistake.

Wish I could remember the details, it could have been a non-call. Very disappointed that the season was over, especially after PC lost a triple OT game vs U. Mass Lowell in the HE tournament that year after the refs upheld the winning goal even though it looked clear to me that the goal was kicked in. Sometimes the calls and bounces are with you and sometimes they aren’t, but that was a really good team so it was too bad they didn’t repeat as National Champs.

I thought so too. I think several of the retuning seniors could have turned pro but came back instead hoping to repeat as National Champs. I believe 4 or 5 of players on that team are playing in the NHL this year. I heard that two players had the flu and tried to play in that Worcester NCAA game anyway, admirable effort and dedication, but very bad luck timing wise. I don’t think that this year’s team has that level of skill, but maybe they will have better luck.

I found this clip of the winning goal online. Not a rules expert but it looks to me like the UMD player was in the crease and also pushed Ellis aside as he reached around to tap the puck into the net so that it didn't roll outside of the net on the left side. I assume this is where my thought that the refs wanted this game to end rather than call goalie interference came from. People on this site probably know more about that rule than me, but I think they should have called that and waived off the goal. Would be interested in other veiwpoints.

Also found this clip of the 2016 Hockey East Championship semi-final in the PC vs UML game. The final play is at the end of the highlights. The UML player moved his skate sideways to create the angle for the tip in, he wasn't trying to play the puck with his stick at all. I think they ruled that this was not a kicking motion, but it certainly violates the purpose and spirit of the rule for not allowing a puck to be kicked in.

Outcomes in hockey games can be pretty flukey and often hinge on luck as much as anything else.

Back to 2023 and an unusual loss after being ahead after 2 periods. Expected the game would go to the extra period but U. Mass came back and scored with a 4-1 breakaway with under a minute to go. Hope we can right the ship in Amherst Saturday, it’s a long season and you can’t win them all. They are a good team and so are we, next game should be another tough battle.

One thing was odd to me, after the game PC did not line up for the usual handshake line. Wondered if there was a reason for that besides this being a two game series against the same team? I have seen that before when the next game is the same team at the same rink, but maybe this is the general custom now even for a home and away series?

Another similar game and loss. We were so close to getting that 2nd goal in the third, needed one of those bounces then, that would likely have been the W for us. An example of reverting to the statistical mean after perhaps too great of a start. Their win % now is 69.2 which is still above the team average under Coach Leaman and way above any other PC coach. Time for a return to normal puck luck (hopefully). Two challenging away games at Arizona State next weekend and then away against BC. Hockey East is a bear this year.

This is getting old fast. Talk about statistical over correcting. This was the 3rd straight game that PC has lost after leading going into the 3rd period. Until this string of lost 2nd period leads PC had only done that 7 times since the beginning of coach Leaman's tenure. That is 7 times in 12 years so until now this has happened only once every other year. Talk about statistical anomalies, where have the Hockey Gods gone?

Watched the game on the AZ State stream and to me it looked like PC had the better of play pretty much the entire game. Toward the end of the 3rd with the game tied, Yoder makes what looks like a nice bar down goal to take the lead. The goal was challenged, and the announcers assumed that the call would stand because the video replay showed that the puck went in. Then the ref comes out and waives off the goal, not because it didn't go in but because a PC player who was at the end of his shift had not cleared the zone at the other side of the rink when Yoder turned the puck back in so it was called offsides. I thought that there was a rule change this year against challenging offsides, but evidently not.

The Friars acquitted themselves well once again, but are just not finishing, or at least not getting credit for scoring even when they score. After the game the AZ coach responded to a question about whether his team had played hard and heavy hockey, "Yeah, I thought so. That's hard to do against that team because they're the epitome of hard and heavy. They're that good." I certainly hope that being that good will show up in the final score, it's not too late.
