Friars Hockey 23-24: Season-Long Thread of Pain

Listening to Mike is the absolute opposite experience listening to Jack Edwards.

Mike Logan does a great job, whether doing play-by-play for the Friars or for other games. I would take him over Jack Edwards any day. In fact when I have the choice of watching a Bruins game on NESN and a national network, I will choose the other network.

Now, as to the Friars this weekend, I'll take the split. I didn't hear the game, but their final five minutes look impressive and I like the fact they played until the end.

Next 5 games are at home starting with Stonehill this Friday. Gets tougher after that with Denver and RPI the following weekend then 2 with Vermont to close out the homestand. Think we will see the frosh goalie on Friday.

Only listened to the game yesterday. Too many 5 on 3 penalty kills they got into. But they did show moxie coming back in last 5 minutes with a chance to tie in the last minute and they were down 2 skaters who were given game mis-conducts.

Not a good start today going down 2 goals early in the 1st, but after the Friars got back in the game it seemed to me that the refs felt it was their job to see that Michigan won. The major against Needham was questionable to say the least. That canceled a PC power play and ultimately accounted for 2 goals for the opponent instead. Great grit by the Friars at the end, came close to tying the game, but coming back from 5-1 to a final 5-4 score could be big boost.

A split away against a very good Michigan squad is a good outcome, especially when the refs seemed to exemplify what the home court advantage is all about.

The penalty against Needham only came about because Michigan challenged it. Upon watching the video, what Michigan raised concern about was visable, so the refs called it. Were there a lot of other things going on there that could have been called penalties? yes. I felt the officiating leaned the other way Saturday night. I found it amusing that myself and other Michigan fans were getting annoyed with the number of times the net came off behind Svedeback and wanting a delay of game on that crap. Amusing because our goalie last year bumped the net a few times drawing complaints from opposing fans on this forum.

As for Michigan and goaltending, yeah, there's some concern this year. Our starting goalie from last season did not return for his senior year. West who started Saturday played only a handful of games the last couple seasons. Barczewski is an unkown to Michigan, he's a graduate transfer from Canisius. He looked pretty good Sunday minus those last few minutes where the Friars were playing outstanding.

It was a fun weekend of hockey to watch. Good luck to the Friars the rest of this season.

Went to Schneider last night. Decent crowd considering the opponent. Not much upside to winning that game convincingly, but they certainly did. Game started with a Stonehill dump in pass that bounced crazily and jumped behind Svedeback, he reached back and luckily grabbed the puck before it crossed the goal line. I looked up shortly after that and noted the SOG totals were 2-0 Stonehill. From that point a vast majority of the time was in the Stonehill end of the ice. Toward the end of the game I checked the SOG again and it was 52-4 PC. Svedeback left the game during the third with a shut out going but faced only 4 shots so his save % barely budged. The back up goalie faced only 2 shots but gave up a goal on the last one with 8 seconds left. Poor guy has a save % of 50%. If he gets a full game along the way I am sure that will quickly bring it back to respectability.

Denver coming to town next Friday, Schneider should be packed and hoping for a repeat of the exciting game and win the last time Denver was here.

These were the kind of games they let slip away last year and it killed them in the end. Glad to see they didn't let up against a lesser opponent. A win against Denver (again) would be huge.

What a game tonight. Great crowd, especially the large and enthusiastic student cohort who stayed and were loud the whole game. Friars showed great resilience and were rewarded for their hard work. Denver is a very skilled team but PC kept coming and prevailed 4-3. If you missed this game it was an awesome college sports experience, well done Friars! It was a treat to be there.

I know it's "only" RPI but I can't remember a last time PC got two shorthanded goals in one game. In recent years I'm more used to seeing PC cough up the puck leading to a shorthanded breakaway for the opponent.

Tonight is an important night for the Friars. In recent years, they have split or tied these series against lesser HE teams.

Question/Observation: Is this the highest early ranking in years for HE teams? 10 in the Top 27. Will be an interesting season.

Hope that Bennet Schimek is not seriously injured. The knee on knee hit at the end of the second period was dangerous and Schimek needed to be helped off the ice. That could be very costly, he is a key cog of the offense. That is where the cost of the penalty to the offending team can't really offset the damage that might have been done to the individual and his team.

Haven't seen any updates on Schimek's status, hopefully he's not out too long. Hate to see a play like that, fan of a team or not.

This year's offense seems to be structured much better. Adams and Chmelar have seemingly been on the ice together more recently, and the pairing seems to work. What seemed like #21 Berard dominating the puck possession last year, you have a lot less of that and a lot more sharing of the puck among teammates.

I don't know, but all the indications are that Hockey East will be rugged this year. With the exception of Vermont, it looks like there are no bad teams and if a team shows up not ready to play against almost anyone, they'll be on the losing end.

Well that looked like last year all over again, not able to get the second night win, end in a tie, lose the shootout point. VT was a lot better last night that's for sure and the Friars didn't seem to have as much get up and go. Friars lost another front line player in Kiefiuk after blocking a shot with his glove hand in the first period.

Both PC scores were followed up quickly by a VT score, could not sustain any momentum. VT after only 14 shots on Friday had 36 last night. Both team had a few post hits in this one too.

Another night where they took too many penalties. They are doing a good job killing them but it's a recipe for disaster to keep that up.

League is going to be tough this year, expect a lot of close nail biters. Got to win those home games.

Really small crowd, I hear the students had a huge block party in the afternoon and lots of other Halloween parties that night.

The Fan appreciation buffet was good though.:D

Schimek out, Kiefiuk got hurt early on (broken finger is what I read). I underestimated Schimek's impact on the offense relative to his linemates, like the Adams line, those with Schimek really click and even the Kiefiuk line, his missing when he was knocked out of the lineup really showed afterwards.

What's up with Vermont? An ejection each night. I'd say that falls on the coaching staff but that is out of their control.

I checked last year’s stats and it looks like there were 15 OT games with 8 decided in OT and 7 recorded as ties with the extra point decided in a shootout. I would bet that might have been the most in D1 hockey. In shootouts, I think Schimek was often one of the better shooters so another consequence of the dirty hit.

A big concern is the short bench, not sure what the timing constraints are for bringing in players early but there are some great young players in the pipeline so I hope some can be added sooner than later.

Tough weekend coming up and it looks like PC will be down 2 starters that got hurt last weekend. Going to have to dip into that short depth now. UNH always gives PC problems so I expect these 2 games will be close, hard hitting affairs.

Rubber starts meeting the road now.

I agree, tough hockey series coming up with both teams off to good starts. Mark Divver tweeted that Schimek was at practice Tuesday and had dodged a bullet. Hope that means he’ll be in the lineup, he can be a difference maker.
