Friars Hockey 23-24: Season-Long Thread of Pain

Sounds like we're all in agreement then that having Poisson, Kelley, Yoder, Connelly and Mustard more than makes up for the loss of Bennett + scraps. I'd say that looks pretty good for the program. I mean you'd really have to be an idiot to be sitting there opening night and complaining that Brady and Hubbarde aren't on the team.

Almost all of course.

But yes, I for one am very pleased with the returning seniors and the mentioned two newcomers. In addition, it looks like the freshman trio of Adams, Malinoski and Gamache will be back. Hopefully several of the other incoming freshman will be solid contributors on the ice and in the locker room too. With the skill level of Connelly and Mustard I anticipate an exciting up tempo offense, and with Svedeback returning in goal and lots of experienced dmen, a similar low goals against defense. It would help if fans showed up consistently to avidly root the team on and add some energy to the arena. We've seen the impact that can have on the, (too seldom in my opinion) occasions where that happens.

This portal thing with no disincentive involved in moving from team to team makes it very tempting for players to test the waters. I wonder if it would make a difference if more coaches joined the RIT coach in enforcing a practice to remove any players from the roster who enter the portal. I wonder if that would create a more level playing field for the schools and coaches in general. Who wants to spend all the energy needed to recruit then develop players only to have them leave for other opportunities on a whim. If they couldn't just return if it doesn't work out for them, I bet that would make the players at least think twice about the wisdom of their decision.

Hoping that Connelly-Gamache-Adams becomes a line of former USHL teammates from the 22-23 season. While disappointed about Bennett hitting the portal it was most likely influenced by his brother leaving and only that. You see a lot of brothers playing together on NCAA teams every year so it's no surprise he would follow Will out. They could end up back home closer to Minnesota, maybe Will would find a more available roster spot with a CCHA team.

Tough to expect anything from Connelly based on his history.

Rumor is the brothers are going to Arizona State

Once the player goes in the portal, the school does not have to honor the scholarship anymore for the next year IIRC.

That would be an interesting version of the line that BC rolled with this year. Then another strong line with Yoder, Malinoski and Poisson or Mustard perhaps. A lot of capable offensive skaters to mix and match.

Speaking of history, Connelly scored 4 points for TriCity last night with 2 goals including a highlight reel personal effort available on the PC twitter site. He has 31 goals and 78 points in 52 games so far this year. The next leading scorer on that team is 32 points behind. Could be PC’s next 1st rounder, the last was Mark Jankowski who stayed all four years and is still in the NHL. Exciting year coming up I hope.

I am surprised I forgot about him. Was actually at an early season game he played in at Holy Cross in 2018 when David Berard was the head coach. He was injured in that game by an end of game totally unnecessary dirty hit. That created a brief heated verbal exchange after the game between the coaches. He sat out injured a good number of games after that and wore a no-contact jersey in Buffalo prior to the PC game vs UMD at the Frozen Four in 2019, (which he did not play in). He left the next season to play in juniors in Canada. I believe he originally went to PC directly from prep school, but needed that additional year of playing experience against better players. He then came back to finish his degree at BU, but struggled to match his status as a 1st round pick.

PC gets a player with two first names (Logan Will).

Sounds like a high character player coming as a senior transfer from Colorado College which is now coached by one of Nate Leaman's former assistants, Kris Mayotte. According to Mark Divver he was a team captain for his last two years and that team has done very well during his captaincy. My assumption is he came highly regarded from coach Mayotte. Perhaps another player in the mold of Luke Krys, if so that could be a nice plus for team chemistry.

Yea let's talk about Connelly's history and the reason he won't go in the first round.

Look Zlax, instead of casting dispersions on other people as is your persistent mo, maybe seek some redemption for yourself. You might find the effort to be kind instead of cruel could help you more than you think.

Google his name and look at all the articles that come up on his character. This is a legit issue with him.

No self reflection required I guess Zlax. Ask yourself, “why am I posting on the fan forum for PC”? Is it a wonder why you are reviled on this site - as another poster said, “what a Richard”.

On the subject of Connelly, an article that shows the positive changes he's made from being 16 and doing dumb kid stuff to the changes he's made since then

Mitchell Miller also had issues when he was younger and that still follows him around. So you were fine with the Bruins signing him? Just want to get that on the record.

Oh jukebox boy, you are like a broken record alright. I know it's hard for you but read the article on Connelly.

Thanks for posting this PK. I can’t think of a better landing spot for Connelly than PC. The coaching staff cares about academics and character building so will meet whatever challenges there might be head on. I hope we get to witness a generational level talent playing here, if so it will be a year to remember.

So the National Championship will be played tomorrow by two teams that Providence beat. Those two games were played at Schneider arena and I was lucky enough to be there for both. A taste of things to come for the 2024/2025 season, (I hope).

D1 College hockey is the best spectator sport going with the speed, the skill, and the enthusiasm of talented amateur athletes. Hope the changes we are seeing from more and more interference from the NHL, and the impact of rule changes made by the NCAA, won’t take that away.
