Friars Hockey 23-24: Season-Long Thread of Pain

Will make it to tomorrow's game for my first time catching senior night there. How many are in this year's group?

I think there are 8 players to be honored, 3 seniors and 5 graduate students. Not sure about the timing of the ceremony, usually it is before the scheduled start time of the game. I have enjoyed that tradition over the years, the effort and success of the players brings back good memories.

Yep, just checked the roster.

Well done this afternoon with 2 Pts vs Northeastern who were playing very well recently including Northeastern winning the Beanpot. With U. Mass losing tonight vs Maine, PC finishes 4th in HEA and host the quarter final game next Saturday vs U. Mass at home. The home matchup is more favorable than the large rink in Amherst so that is a real plus, too bad students won't be back from break yet. Look forward to a great match next Saturday. Glad we get to avoid a mid-week opening round game for the first round on Wednesday. Another trip to the HEA finals at TD Garden would be a nice end of season plus. Good luck to the Friars the rest of the way!

After last night's tie against Northeastern (that is how the NCAA treats it) PC is now 14th in PWR which puts them right on the bubble yet again. The loser of the PC/UMass game is likely out of the NCAA tournament and the winner is going to be a bubble team based on other results.

And those of us who are fans remember that PC won the national championship out of the 14th position in 2015.

Well done presentation for senior night at the game. Not quite the win the ideal way but exciting game still. Probably gonna go ahead and get in for season tickets next year.

Will be a big bargain I expect, some really high end players coming in if everything works out. Not sure what it would take for Schneider to attract persistent student interest and their willingness to hang in there for the whole game, but next year could be the acid test for that. In the meantime, let's cross our fingers about this weekend, as The Freds said, PC was the last at large team in the NCAA's in 2015 and look what happened!

A bargain to watch a middle of the road Hockey East team that hasn't appeared (or been in position for a bid 2020) in the NCAA postseason since 2019. It has quickly become evident the last few years that Leaman and staff have not been developing players.

Look at Chase Dafoe of Alaska Fairbanks. He can't break into the PC lineup in 2022-2023 season playing in only eight games not registering a point. He goes to Alaska Fairbanks and makes an impact scoring seven goals and seven assists. His seven goals if he had them at PC would have been sixth on the team in goals scored.

Another one is Michael Citara who only played eight games at PC having a goal and an assist. He goes to Merrimack and plays 31 games this year and had six goals and nine assists. He would have been seventh on PC in goals this season with those numbers.

Both of these players were passed over consistently and put in the stands to watch games while Brady Berard played in 34 games with a goal and two assists.

PC is starting to lose Hockey Alumni kids like Chris Romaine as he decommitted from PC. This is a drafted player of a program alum saying "No Thanks" to Nate after committing to the program.

Is this program going up or down right now? It seems like it is in a slow spiral back to the middle of the conference which they have always been.

PK sees a flawed argument in this. What you fail to present is that Alaska's strength of schedule was considerably weaker than Providence's, so of course Dafoe would have a better chance getting those points against weaker competition on a more-regular basis as a benefit of playing a schedule as an independent rather than being a part of a conference. You're wanting to believe that if Dafoe was given equal ice time at PC that he would put up identical numbers, but that's just not the case. The 35th ranked schedule versus that ranked 7th among Division 1. For a team that's in the middle of all of Division 1 someone has to get those points. Put him on a Denver, a Michigan State, BC, BU, North Dakota and a dozen other teams and I guarantee he's not getting close to those numbers.

I assume you don't know the specifics of why Romaine decommitted and want to blame it on Leaman because that's just what you do. Unless you have sources that show that it's because of PC and Leaman that he's decided to play at Ohio State (who by the way sat in sole possession of last place in their conference), your assumption of the reason can't really be taken seriously. You cried about the players who hit the portal last year like they were all some big loss, and other than Citara I don't see any of them as being a difference maker. I say good luck, hope Romaine has success at Ohio State. I'm sure someone else will step in and fill his role where you'll still be crying about his decommitting a year from now.

I guess you missed four year PC player Patrick Moynihan who put up the same numbers as he did at PC with the Fighting Irish this season. We will never get a true report on the reason he left but could PC have used him this season? Absolutely. That is on the coaching staff's relationship with the player.

I certainly didn't miss it. He left after year four and I had zero interest in following his path after PC other than occasionally glancing at box scores for Notre Dame. You act like unhappy players are exclusive to Providence but have a look at the portal last year and see for yourself how many four year players went somewhere else. If Fontaine doesn't stay at Northeastern for a fifth year is it because he's got a conflict with the coaches? There are countless examples I could give and you'll circle back to "But x player left PC because he didn't like the coach". You probably play the same song every time you're around a jukebox too.

More whack-a-mole with Zlax just like last year, the year before that and downward. There is aways some hidden flaw that he reveals from his Wizard of Oz perch. When you look at other posters on this fan forum who are critical and disappointed with their teams, (coaches or individual players), there is no equal to the consistently negative Zlax, who only sees doom and gloom and never posts something positive. What an admirable achievement that is. In my book, one consistently positive result of a PC win is that you can be rest assured that there will not be a from Zlax. Why are we so blessed that he ended up on our site?

Fact is there is a lot more to be grateful for this season than to criticize. Finishing 4th is pretty impressive in this year's HEA. When you consider that was done with a roster that had no player on any of the HEA all star teams that is a reflection of some very good preparation and coaching. Do you realize this is the 12th straight season that PC has had a winning record? In fact their record for the past 4 years, which Zlax finds so alarming, reflects a winning percent about equal to the overall record of Lou Lamoriello.

One thing I noticed is that PC played with a noticeably smaller roster this year. I wondered if that was a response to having several players who did not get much time transferring out. The NCAA has made it too easy to transfer by eliminating the requirement to sit out a year if you do. With the smaller roster I am pretty sure that there were no more than one or two players who sat out more games than they played this year. Unfortunately, that meant that there wasn't the same depth available in the case of an injury, and in the game of hockey, an occasional injury is an unavoidable hazard. I am not sure about this, but I think the coming year may be the last that allows five years of eligibility for games. I believe the old rule of 5 years of eligibility but only 4 for games will be restored. If that is the case this is the last year of transfers for a graduate year even if the player already played 4 years. Does anybody here know?

As mentioned before, I think there may be a couple of very high end players coming in next year, I look forward to what this coaching staff can do with that level of talent. Hope I get to see that - it would be a lot of fun and even fewer posts by Zlax would be a big benefit too.

To this point, six of Dafoe's seven goals were against independents. I bet a number of Friars would improve their scoring playing asteady diet of Augustana, LIU, and Stonehill.

Dafoe transfers and ends up with that goal total, he complains PC could've used him. Probably plays 4th line at PC if he stayed and Xlax would call him garbage. Thank you for proving my point (and being openminded in looking over where Dafoe's numbers often came from). Not everyone is willing to do, instead cherry pick and nitpick to fit a certain narrative. If PC had Alaska's schedule they might have dropped 8 games tops. If Alaska had PC's schedule they would likely finish in the bottom three in conference.

Two of them came against Arizona State though which PC played this season.

Whose fault is that they had a smaller roster than needed? The head coach and his staff.

You really don't know how DIV 1 sports works do you? Esp hockey. BU and BC were in the same situation a few years ago. It has nothing to do with "the head coach and his staff". I'll let you figure out what the real issue is. Last time I looked, BU and BC have pretty good DIV 1 Hockey programs. Why don't you jump over to the UNH thread, you would fit right in with all the drama going on over there.

I assume it was the coaching staff, however, mine was a positive post about a way to reduce transfers from players that want more playing time right away. This response is like Zlax posting that Yoder scoring the winning goal in the great PC win vs BC on 1/13 was the coaches fault. Maybe it was, but that is a pretty positive thing to say right? Zlax gets caught up in his underwear by putting everything in a negative light. Gets confused I guess.
