Friars Hockey 23-24: Season-Long Thread of Pain

The article PK provided is a comprehensive recap of the positive things that Trevor Connelly has done to address the mistake he made over two years ago when he had just turned 16. Imagine any of us doing something similar before the age of social media when it would have never been broadcast for consumption by others, (especially the likes of the insensitive schmuck who lurks on our site who has no qualms about attempting to slander any person for any reason). Most instructive to see the quotes from his current coaches about how impressed they are with this young man, not just as a great hockey player, but for his character and the extent of his efforts to make up for a youthful error. Well worth the read, it sheds a new light on the subject and makes me even more excited that he is coming to PC.

Thanks for posting this PK. I can’t think of a better landing spot for Connelly than PC. The coaching staff cares about academics and character building so will meet whatever challenges there might be head on. I hope we get to witness a generational level talent playing here, if so it will be a year to remember.

So the National Championship will be played tomorrow by two teams that Providence beat. Those two games were played at Schneider arena and I was lucky enough to be there for both. A taste of things to come for the 2024/2025 season, (I hope).

D1 College hockey is the best spectator sport going with the speed, the skill, and the enthusiasm of talented amateur athletes. Hope the changes we are seeing from more and more interference from the NHL and the impact of rule changes made by the NCAA won’t take that away.

Hey, just happy to bring some decent reading material over to this board for the true fans of PC hockey. I agree it's a good landing spot with his continued development into adulthood and becoming a better player. Having former USHL teammates along as familiar faces will certainly help him too. PK did a number of dumb things when he was still a kid but like Connelly I've grown out of it.

Yea let's talk about Connelly's history and the reason he won't go in the first round.

Taken from that very same article:

Since the photo got out, Connelly has worked at redemption through volunteer work and diversity training courses. He and his father even coached an under-14 team at the Amerigol LATAM Cup, an international tournament in Florida that seeks to break down barriers by featuring squads from "non-traditional" hockey locales such as Egypt, Brazil and the Caribbean.

Connelly coached the multicultural HPOC team, organized by the U.S.-based group Hockey Players of Color.

"It was so fun," Connelly said. "It was so cool to see all these different countries there playing hockey. I had such a blast being able to coach kids and give them my knowledge."

"Everyone has been super-respectful to me," he said. "I'm open to it and I know I've moved on and done a lot to better myself, so I just try to be honest and tell them the truth. That's all I can do."

Sounds to me like a kid who has grown and matured as a person since then.

Thanks to PK and Charlton for their input and grace in not dignifying Zlax's attempted slander which would only make matters worse.

Zlax improperly conflates an egregious case in which a different hockey player perpetrated a disgusting prank on a developmentally delayed young kid. Evidently that player showed little remorse for the horrible thing he did even after the boys' parents stepped in. In the case of Connelly, it was not about something he did at all, but rather a photo he took of a swastika built out of lego blocks by a teammate. He briefly posted the photo on social media, but then took it down within hours after realizing that it could be considered offensive rather than a creative use of lego blocks. At the time I assume he would have been a sophomore in high school at most, and truly not aware of how offensive that photo was. It is very easy for adults to not appreciate that a young person might not actually know about the historical significance of a symbol like that - but why not give the kid the benefit of the doubt? In any case, he didn't leave it at that, but rather took a number of significant grown-up steps to rectify it. First by educating himself on the subject matter, and then by doing several admirable things to try and make up for it. Read the article that PK linked and that Charlton quoted above. How many of us would be that mature and diligent?

It would be good if Zlax would take steps to educate himself and grow up, rather than consistently showing himself to be the model of bad judgement and meanness over and over again.

I even invited him out to Charlton for hockey chat and a beer, and that got skipped over. I wonder why. Acting like the family brat isn't really an endearing attitude.

I asked you a question...I have failed to see an answer to it.

What a good sign about the recruiting going on at PC. With over 70% of NHL players coming from North America there could be a number of high draft picks in the above group of PC skaters this June. I assume international players will absorb a proportionate number of picks, and that some surprise picks will take some spots to shake up the selection order, but with 32 NHL teams, PC could have an impressive showing in this upcoming draft.

Doubt many of them will last three seasons in Friartown with how many transfers are leaving the program now.

“Both of these players were passed over consistently and put in the stands to watch games while Brady Berard played in 34 games with a goal and two assists.”

The above is part of a Zlax post from 3/18. So if it was wrong to play him in every game in 22/23 how does that support post #270? You are now saying he is going to play in more than all the games at BC somehow, when he wasn’t good enough to deserve to play in all games at PC. Zlax logic 101. So he worked his way out of the lineup at the end of the 23/24 season but now that’s a cause for criticism too. I am noticing that Zlax is a difficult person to please. Why not take your commentary skills to the BC thread next year Zlax? I think they would love to have your consistent wit and inspirational message which we no longer appreciate or deserve.

As far as transfers, are you paying attention to the activity in the transfer portal? It isn’t just a PC issue, but impacts all of college hockey and other sports as well. There is only 1 PC player I wish didn’t enter the portal this year, but it’s not Brady Berard. I wish him well, but I think he may have vision issues because he can’t corral hard passes and doesn’t have good stick handling skills so treats the puck like a hot potato. That causes him to rush his passes then turn the puck over too often because he seems in such a panic to get rid of it.

My fear about getting top flight high draft picks isn’t that they will transfer to another school, but rather that we won’t be able to keep them from turning pro early. It will be great to have them, but if it’s only for one or two years, that will be disappointing to PC fans. Thinking that a recent example of that might be Jack Dugan who left after two years after the 19/20 season. Since then he has languished in the Vegas farm system. Great player, but I think a better course for him might have been to stay and further develop at PC and perhaps leave with more refined skills and more leverage.

It was interesting to learn that BU arranged for their entire team to see Lane Hutson’s first NHL game in Montreal. Another great player, but not sure if it’s smart to promote losing him to the pros so soon. You reap what you sow.

Good catch. Brady didn't work out and become the player Brett did. Really nothing else to say about that. Don't worry PK won't come back in three months and flip-flop.

Trevor Connelly and Jack Parsons are on the roster for Team USA in the U18 World Championship in Finland that begins on 4/25. All USA games will be broadcast by the NHL network. Today they played a pre-tournament game against Sweden and team US won 8-5. Looks like Connelly had a goal and assist, while Parsons was credited with the win. Good luck to Team USA and our PC representatives!

Anyone else tuned in to the U18s? Caught the game vs. Latvia. Connelly was US's player of the game. A little preview of what he may bring to PC. Reminds me of a mix of Dugan and Berard with involving his teammates and also his puckhandling skill as well. Considering his frame I expect he'll be in NCAA a couple years to bulk up and continue developing. Very nice get for PC considering Connelly is among the non-NTDP players on the team this tournament and showing he belongs.

I have been following this for sure. This is the 3rd big International event he has been in since late summer last year and he has been a star in each one. I think your analogy is good, Dugan was more of a distributor with great passing skills and Connelly is that and an equally good goal scorer. Something special coming to PC, what a player!

Cody Monds' journey into the transfer portal brings him to his third stop in three years, heading to Robert Morris for next season. So.... sounds more like a player issue than a particular program issue. Anyway.....

Eh not the first time a player has taken a stupid penalty and far from the last. There will be many more for many others.
