Friars Hockey 22-23: Everybody Gets A Thread

Since it's not been started yet, here for everything Providence College hockey. Surely, more to be added.

Team seems different this year. Playing with more confidence, can roll out four good lines. 2-3 years ago it seemed like the team was a clear top 6 forwards and then the bottom 6 was atrocious. Svedeback handling things well, and the team fixed some of their mistakes from the Western Ontario game giving up multiple man-advantages. One thing that stands out different so far is where Providence almost always gave up a first goal in the opening minutes, now they're the one getting the first goal on the board so far.

Well no first goal last night, nor second, nor third. Another night against a really good team Friars can't find the back of the net, kind of reminds me of last year. They managed to squeak out a win against NU last week, but not last night against defending Natty team. 3 PP goals by Denver is not going to get it done. Staying out of the penalty box has to be a big mantra for them as the penalty kill has been a bit weak.

Does the Swede get to be between the pipes tonight or do we see the transfer come in?

Will the Friars stop those hitting from behind penalties? Another one last night that led to the 3rd goal in second and playing with only 5 Dmen rest of game.

Friars have never won at Denver, see if they can break that tonight.

Tough weekend at the Mile High City....Penalties, Penalties, Penalties and many by the older guys. Hard to beat good teams if you are in the box a lot. At least the PK was better on night 2. Appears Friars have a goalie, now where is that scoring Leaman thinks he has.

We will see if PC has the right coach to win...he has been distracted in the past few years and the program has been in a slow decline since 2019.

Unfortunately they are a victim of their own success in my mind. They get really good players, develop them, and they leave early for the NHL. That's not a bad thing. When I was there they were horrible for 3 out of the 4 years. I am thrilled to see what they have become as a program - getting the big name recruits and producing NHL talent. They will be fine - he's a top notch coach

Where are the Friar fandoms these days?

Big early season home and home with the Minutemen a team that has had PCs number last 3 years....

Oh I just like to swoop in and bitch when they lose like Nate Leaman derailed my dreams.....

Well a big 7-4 win over the Minutemen last night. Berard gets off the snide with 2 (and could have had more) Duran with 3, Svedback with some big saves to keep the Friars in the lead. Not a typical Umass - PC game, will be interesting to see what happens tonight.

It didn't look good after 2 periods with the Friars down 3-1. UMASS with 3 straight after Engelbert opened the scoring and Friars not doing much at all. 11 shots on goal after 2 periods. But they wake up in the 3rd, score 2 goals to tie it up, out shoot UMASS 22-3 in 3rd, then in OT Brett Berard gets the game winner and the extra point.

Big 5 point weekend.

Next up HE leader UCONN....

Solid weekend. Should get them in the top 10, maybe even top 5. Big test coming against UConn. Both teams are hungry and HE points at stake; will be fun to watch. Veterans get discounted tickets for Friday's game at PC.

Just burns me up inside I can't come in here and crap all over Leaman after a sweep of UMass.

Other than that, feeling pretty good about the UConn matchup. I don't doubt that they are a very good team and will give Providence some troubles, but outside of BU and Ohio State (somewhat, but much less than BU) they haven't really had a competitive schedule. Doesn't mean much, just an observation.

Svedeback really earned that scholarship this weekend. Even though he wasn’t lights out, he kept PC in the game on Saturday and was just good enough on Friday.

His positioning and readiness for oncoming plays already seems above Stauber. Despite Stauber's solid numbers too many times it felt like a puck just blew by him without any movement. I haven't seen many of those with Svedeback but whether someone ripped a shot or just a weird one snuck by Stauber it often felt like a delayed reaction.

Tough game last night with up and down play throughout. The PP was horrible all night even giving up 3 breakaway shorthanded rushes to the Huskies. Thankfully, Svedeback was up to the task and stopped all of them. The penalty in the offensive zone by one of the seniors with 5 mins or so to go was another down moment especially since UCONN tied it up on the PP. UCONN goalies came up with a bunch of big stops to keep the Friars off the board, only Yoder's steal and short handed goal beating him. (second time in a week for Yoder).

With an afternoon game in Hartford.. A 4 point weekend would be much better than a 1 point weekend, hope they come out ready for another battle and score some goals.

Workman like game last night, Friars take care of game 1 against UVM 4-0. Shutout for the transfer goalie as the frosh is rested.

Another 3 points on the line tonight to finish up this stretch of HE games they have been in.

Berard, Yoder, Chemlar and Ford with the goals.

Sundquist gets his first start on D in place of the injured Kelley picks up his first career assist.

Friars come out with 2 points on Saturday. Another OT game where they win the 3 on 3. Thankfully it did not go to a shootout.

Final was 4-3.

Roden in goal again.

Next up 2 home games this weekend against 2 not so good ECAC teams, for PWR reasons need to win both.

Back to HE the following weekend.

Svedeback was sick, was hopeful it wasn't any injury sustained during the UConn weekend. Thought it was a coaching move give #35 some rest for one game at least.
