FORE! WCHA First Round - Michigan Tech at Denver

Re: FORE! WCHA First Round - Michigan Tech at Denver

While all factors seem to favor dU, they play the games for a reason and I doubt Tech is going to just roll over. Status of injured players could be a factor, but overall sure dU has the edge. Still it ain't over till it's over.

Re: FORE! WCHA First Round - Michigan Tech at Denver

Chris has it right, The Zamboni tore a huge hole in the ice and the MTU game was rseumed on Sunday where DU took care of business. Amazingly, thousands of people returned for third-day conclusion.

After we beat Tech, then came UMD and the imfamous "Coffin" appearance, when DG and his DU friends carried a real coffin into the UMD fan section. Frickin' amazing.

That Sunday was also memorable because it was an amazingly beautiful day (like mid 60's) and, since the 3rd period was played in the afternoon, there were a number of fans in shorts, sandals and t-shirts. Not too often you get to watch college hockey in beach attire...

{DU sells Starbucks with an optional shot of a choice of liquors}

[Hopefully that makes it a little less irritating] :)

I've been going to the arena for 6 years and I didnt know that
I can assure they serve 24 ounce molson's for 7 dollars though cash or credit

Yeah, it's over between the carver sandwiches (or whatever those things are called), and the entrance down to the Joy Burns Arena. They sell brownies, rice krispie treats, regular & decaf, hot chocolate and hot tea (I believe) -- plus the optional shots. It's like $8 for the loaded drinks. It's just like the lemonade stands where you can get whiskey or vodka added for $4 or $5 extra.

Tech needs to sell beer at games. The way we play, this would raise tons of money for the team, and also increase attendance at the games. :D

I was there for the "coffin" game and was totally impressed. Was that the game where DU won 7-1 with Brett (I was too stupid to be accepted by DU) Hull scoring UMD's only goal? After that game the Alumni Board of Directors repaired to the bar at Writer's Manor (a moment of silence, please) where we were joined by a passel of unhappy UMD fans wearing those jackets with the little tails hanging off the back. We spent the night shouting out the score, in the event it had slipped the minds of our guests. Only trying to help, you understand.

I must say I was suprised by the beer and the vodka/fresh squeezed lemonade stand at the on campus stadium when I visited during the DU/Minn series a month ago. I'll second the Tech should sell beer suggestion.

I was not impressed with the lack of DU fans though, too many empty seats for the #2 team in the country at that time and if people are expecting a smaller crowd this weekend, that'll be a quiet place.

Re: FORE! WCHA First Round - Michigan Tech at Denver

DU fans must've had some fun with that. :D

The DU fans taunted Hull in the warmups, when he'd break stick after stick (sticks in those days were poorly made, and Hull's stick-speed was SICK.). I remember a big "Brett Who?" banner in the student section, too.

Hull was one of those players you watched every time he came on the ice. He had the quickest release I've ever seen in college hockey. Goalie equipment was much smaller and not as effective as today's stuff, and every goalie in the league feared Hull's shot.

Not too bad.

A little trivia (for anyone): The aforementioned announcer had a nickname. What was it? How did he get it?

Well?? Do we have an answer. The one I gave you wasn't a very nice one and might have been exclusive only to my buddies and I. I might have the wrong announcer and I can't elaborate on this board!!

No offense, but Denverites aren't going to show up against Tech, Bemidji, Mankato or UAA no matter how good the team is at this time. Its a city with 18+ major sports teams (CU Boulder included), unlimited restaurants and some of the best skiing in the world within 90 minutes.

Now if DU can recreate the magic that was in Magness last weekend against CC for every game (it can be done, but will take far more effort) every seat will be filled.

So to summerize, at this time the opponent matters, but if DU can ramp up the atmosphere "they will come."

Important to note that almost every seat for every game is paid for. DU loses money on parking & concessions when there are "no shows." It would behoove them to improve things a little.

Also it has been a bad year for Snow in the mountains, and if I remember correctly the Minnesota weekend was the first time there had been new snow on the slopes in over a month.

DU sells between 5,000 and 6,000 tickets for every home game, and 4,500 of the actual people who buy tickets do come to 95% of the games. But the 1,500 "no shows" for the bottom half WCHA teams make a big difference in the atmosphere on game night. For good teams, those 1500 show up. Students make up a good chunk of the no shows, and as the students go, so goes the atmosphere. And when the kids are on break or in finals, the atmosphere really suffers.

No one is offended. Every team in the league (even the ranked ones) has the same problem - how you get capacity or near-capacity crowds for games not involving MN/WI/UND/a rival? Some may have it worse than others, but it's still an issue.

I've used this example before, but it's the best one I've got. January of 2008, CC comes to Houghton ranked #3 in the country and with eventual PotY Bachman in net. The game is advertised well enough, between the usual posters, the electronic sign down on US-41, and the Misfits doing their "word of mouth" part. Attendance at the Friday game is only 2,107, and ends in a 2-2 tie. Next night was better, with a little over 3,000 in attendance, and we upset them 5-2. While a 5,200-ish weekend isn't too bad in context, that's still about 3,000 tickets that went unsold. 3,000 people who missed two great hockey games. What's an AD to do?
