They had the auction and AC won by bidding the most. It appears that Providence may be the next city to pony up. Albany makes the most sense because of its location. It is centrally located, has a suitable facility, a lot of local media attention and plenty of places to eat and drink within a two mile radius. The main drawback is the lack of a quality, full-service hotel downtown. The arena, city, county and the ECAC did not do enough to promote the event when it was in Albany and that is a significant issue. The ECAC seems to be run on a shoe string, so don't expect them to promote the tournament very aggressively no matter where it is held. I agree that Providence, Syracuse and perhaps Bridgeport would likely do a better job of selling the event.
It still all comes down to which teams are in the field. Cornell, RPI and Clarkson are the biggest draws in the ECAC if you get two of those teams to the semi-finals, you will have crowds. If you don't get at least two of those teams, the crowds will be small.

Utica building holds 3,800. there are some great restaurants in Utica, but no strip or block of bars within a mile or so of the arena. Also, despite drawing 2,500 a games for Div III Utica college, there is not a D I following there. I also think decent downtown hotels at decnet price could be a problem.

To me, it has nothing to do with the crowds. No one can predict which teams will be in the semi-finals on a year in, year out basis. If I had to guess next years semis based on who is returning - it would include Cornell, Union, Harvard, and TBD.

I'm old enough to remember the tournament at the Garden and while it wasn't often a total sellout, the place was filled enough and loud enough to make it a really great weekend.
The Bridgeport rink is close to Amtrak and has plenty of nearby parking. Good hotels nearby. Hartford might also be an option. But the conference has to decide whether it wants to be a player or an also-ran. Right now, they take a back seat to just about everyone and the problems with the conference tournament doesn't help.

The league is the problem. The ECAC barely promotes the thing. How do people know it's going on, when the league all but hides where the tournament is located?
ECAC needs a promotional budget. That's the only way it's going to work, no matter where they put the thing.

The building does a share of the promoting for an event when they have a share in the profits (and I'm not talking about building usage fees).
Given the ECAC's website is SO out of date (at least in terms of the links, they obviously put up news blurbs as they come), they do need some help with promotion.

My problem with the tournament is their inability to find a locale that can put on a good show and create buzz about the tournament. That includes the building but it does not mean the building is responsible for the majority of promotion.

Has anyone mentioned new Barclays center in Brooklyn? In its hockey config it seats 14,500 - AND its new permenant home for NYCs Disney on Ice show! Lol. The spot is so easy tranportation wise. Its on top of the LIRR terminal - intended to woo Islanders fans (but of course there is a fantastic hockey culture out there.) Its also accessible via express subway to Metro North, Amtrak and all of NJ transit. Once you land in NYC at any of the transport hubs, its a 15-20 minute straight shot to the doors of the area. There's excellent dining choices (Brooklyns restaraunt row is next door) and good hotels like Aloft, Botiques, Holiday Inn express and full service ones like the Marriot, Sheraton etc within walking distance of the arena. The best hockey bar in the city is 4 blocks away.
And of course my house is a five minute walk from there hence my lobbying. I have a sick back yard and would love to throw a kegger for Union fans!

It is pretty remarkable that if you plot the geographical center of the conference it's practically the TUC. It may actually be within the Albany city limits.
I hated Albany at first, but all the problems it had (promotion, hotel space, hotel rates, attendance) will have to be overcome at any other building. AC was an interesting experiment but it failed. Albany's really the best choice.

Sorry I was unclear, St Patricks day weekend 16-19th was when they were there. They are Bruins fans and I would expect they would notice publicity about hockey if it was there. I forget what hotel they were in.
