If George Zimmerman is a slathering racist who murdered a black kid just because he was black, it would truly be an outrage. What is MORE outrageous is the casual, trivial way young black people (mostly guys) are being cut down in our streets every single day. And since there's nothing in it for "civil rights" leaders (money, influence, status, etc) they evidently don't care. Or at least don't care enough to speak up about it.

Judge has revoked Zimmerman's bond claiming he misrepresented how much money he had. He must surrender in 48 hours.

I don't know anyone who would ever lie about how much money they have. I am sure this will become a major focus in this case.

I'm sure people try to shade estimates to their advantage. But this wasn't a case of declaring $612,000 when you really have $961,000. He and his family claimed indigence. He was awarded bail of something like $150,000 based on no assets. If I understand correctly, he had actually received contributions (via his website) totaling something like . . . $150,000.

Then there was something about surrenduring one passport, but having received two. You have to know that isn't kosher. Still . . . it's at least partially attributable to legal incompetence. His lawyer should have made sure that he was obeying the terms of bail.

I don't think it's a bombshell in terms of general guilt or innocence, despite the best efforts of the Martin family's lawyer to frame it that way. I also don't think it's an example of the legal system unfairly playing politics. I'll file it under: lie to the judge at your own risk.

The judge let the passport thing slide, saying ordering a new one because you thought you lost the old one isn't that big of a deal. Telling the judge you're broke when there's 150k in a paypal account for you....not so kosher.

Dishonesty-obviously. Dishonestly should be a major issue in any court case-dishonesty anywhere and everywhere-defendents, witnesses, lawyers.

Joe-you are just so right. I have been around a long time and when much youger always thought we got the news reported-by those honest networks and newspapers-Cronkite, Huntley and Brinkley, the NY Times, the Herald Tribune, the Christian Science Monitor. I just felt that they were reporting the events and that everything they told me was factual. I look back now and have a very different feeling. I was young and naive. They were telling me the story as they wanted me to believe it even then. But now, it is ALL about the message, it is ALL about telling the story to influence how we are supposed to think about something. You are forced to research and dig for the information so that you can form your own opinion based on what is most likely the truth. And i wonder. How many, if any, are willing to do that legwork? Do most just believe everything they are told (and the way it is told) by NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, FOX, and of course the National Enquirer and Star Magazine? One of the reason I really love to follow these threads (and occassional make some sarcastic post) is that at least here, we have about the brightest, most informed group around. I may disagree with many of the posters (and i am entitled to do that of course). Being older, I may have a very different slant on things having been raised in different times. But I appreciate almost all of what is posted here-and i get so much more information to digest that i would ever have if I simply let the media brainwash me.

Great points, Doc.

I tend to use The Economist as a news source for US, since it is written from overseas and they don't have as much reason to twist stories to fit a US-based agenda (though who knows what domestic agenda they'd have in Britain?); and I also find The Wall St. Journal fairly reliable, since investors need accurate data to make informed decisions and being money-grubbing capitalists, they know their first prioritiy is to serve their customer. If they were to provide bad data it would impair their reputation and negatively affect their profits.

The slanting of stories is even pronounced on a local level. We have two community papers, one of which is a mouthpiece for the administration while the other is fairly independent.

I tend to favor realclearpolitics.com since I can get both sides of issues, then make my own judgments.

And of course, with a criminal trial, and the incidents surrounding it, you have some pretty serious privacy issues that make it so that, if the media WANTED to tell the straight story, they probably couldn't. Always a tough one.

So, according to Dershowitz the prosecutor spent 40 minutes threatening to sue Harvard Law over dershowitz's comments. The train wreck continues.

If that's true, Florida prosecutors are officially the dumbest in the nation. I was willing to let the Casey Anthony thing go as a single event.
