Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Smashing success. Finished about 8 mins higher than expected; a smidge under 2:02:00.

Weather was perfect. Had a very good runner keep with me and pace me. Biggest issue was that I was using Runkeeper and according to that we were going around 9:08 every 5 mins it reported to me and we were expecting to be under 2 hours as a result. Depending on the accuracy of Runkeeper and the course measurement (I assume shortest distance on the course and not middle of the road?), we seemed to run 13.34 miles so the pacing was kinda right but not straight up according to where we were on the course.

Fantastic work!

And in a nonstop quest to push myself, I signed up for the Hungerford Games 50 mile trail race on 9/24/2016. It will be my first race beyond the 26.2 mark.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

I think to run 50 miles in less than 12 hours, I will need to eat 4,000-4,500 calories a day.

Training plans will have me running 30-35 miles as my peak long run.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

That is such a time commitment on the training part of it... I don't know how anyone does it (although I suppose before kids I could pretty much whatever the heck I wanted). My boss is down in Maryland for the regional IronMan this weekend. The time he spent to train is just insane (and he has kids).

That's pretty much it. I don't have kids, and all I have is a part time job, so I have the time.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

What does 4,000 calories look like on a balanced diet?

3.5 cups of fruit.
5 cups of vegetables
12 oz grains
10.5 oz of meat/beans
6 cups dairy
11 tsp fat/oil
462 discretionary calories...

Thus why I need to see a dietitian. I have a general idea of what that looks like, but I need help with meal planning and fleshing out the details.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Completed my first half trail marathon this weekend. I did it in 3:02...but it was slighly more than 13 miles. Thought I was going to be below 3 hours, another time. I really enjoyed training for it and want to do more running. Would like to do a marathon or 50k someday as well. Trail running > regular running.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

And after two weeks of Les Mills Combat and two weeks of Groundhog Marathon training:

33.5" waist (down from 34")
39" hips (down from 40")
37" chest (down from 37.5")

No big secret... just hard work, and a lot of it. And in terms of my diet, no shortcuts there, either. Just smarter decision making.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Running down a path through the woods/swamp in the dark of night is an eerie experience, let me tell you. I'm very happy to have purchased a headlamp so I can continue getting in my walks/runs while the daylight escapes us earlier and earlier. My daily route is ~3.43 miles, and I'm able to run ~1.5 miles of it now, thought not all at one stretch yet. Still, the running distance is increasing and my overall time keeps shrinking. Combine the running with my weekly hockey game (90-minute ice times), and my legs are starting to get some form back to them.

I need to find better running shoes, and perhaps running shoes designed for colder temps as the two pair I have now both use mesh uppers and a couple of nights have been fairly cool.

Been doing running and the like since high school. Its great, no question. But folks really should be doing moderate lifting as well. Seemingly the world hasn't figured it out, but I have no doubt the health/psychological benefits from moderate lifting go a long ways towards duplicating that of running. Based on personal experience, the whole topic could launch a career based on selling a program.

I have an Olympic weight set at home that I use 3x per week. 1-55lbs dumbbells, and 400lbs of barbell weight. I used to be very strong, but that changed after injuring my shoulder. So now I keep my weights down to only 200lb x3 x15 for bench press, limit the number of other exercises due to range of motion issues. I just didn't bother stating that part as it wasn't my focus in the last post.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Checking in after a long hiatus. Ran in my first 10k last weekend. Finished a very tough course in 49 mins, even. My GPS got wonky so I left a little too much in the tank thinking I had more distance left than I did. Winning time was 39:30 - course was largely on a curving, wooded, hilly trail with lots of steps and tree roots to jump over. Good times.

Wear thick socks. I am training for a marathon on snow and that seems to be the only solution I've found.

Yoga/Pilates (body weight training) also helps. I was amazed at how much stronger I became after doing yoga. It also doesn't hurt that my job involves lifting heavy items for Sam's Club members, such as cases of water, cat litter, 50 pound bags of dog food, 50 pound bags of popcorn kernels, etc.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Weight is down to 213.5. I am mildly pleased I lost weight, though I wasn't intending to.

What's also nice is that I did it on a smart, sensible diet, without resorting to green smoothies, restricting either carbs or fat, or really eliminating anything.

Great job. Sometimes I find that no "special" diet works the best.... Just have everything (especially the obvious unhealthy stuff) in more moderation and step up the excersize a notch.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

That's the coke diet

No coke needed. This is what I do.

-Limit liquid calories. Other than the occasional beer or the sports drink I use for my runs/workouts, I drink coffee in the morning and water after that.
-Double down on fruits and vegetables, and include a decent amount of whole grains.
-In terms of added sugar, which can be my downfall, I limit this to every once in awhile. For example, they had doughnuts in the Sam's Club break room today. I don't think "because it's there" or "it's a Tuesday" are valid reasons to have a doughnut/dessert, so I left them alone. However, there is a bakery at the farmer's market that offers a pecan date scone, so I do allow for that.
-And I get at least 30-60 minutes of purposeful exercise a day, with more coming on Long Run Saturdays.
