Fighting Sioux name may change - Murphy's law

Re: Fighting Sioux name may change - Murphy's law

Am I wrong?

I thought that Ralph Englstad said if the Fighting Sioux name changes they lose the arena.

As I said, am I wrong?

You're wrong I asked the Alumni Direct Tim O'Keefe and he said that is false.

Man, you're going to look foolish the day after they change the name and the stadium gets airlifted to canada... :p

No way! There is a wrecking crew on permanent retainer, ready at a moment's notice.

I think Brenthoven is standing by in his forklift ready to haul away some rubble.

YEAH, Not! :p

Lol, Goon, you are like sooooo 90s.

Unless they get smart and raise the arena up, to be the highest point in ND, with totem poles for supports.

Aw, heck, I can demolish those too. :D

Re: Fighting Sioux name may change - Murphy's law

If they lose the arena we'll take it on Thunder Island. We have a rink, and it's decent, but Mike Fairbourne was driving the zamboni and when Tyler Bozak fired up the microwave, Fairbourne started wigging out on account of the plate in his head, and he crashed through the boards. I have the time to fix it up, but not the willingness. We can still play, but the puck goes out of play a little too often.

Re: Fighting Sioux name may change - Murphy's law

You can certainly criticize the U of Mn policy on playing teams with Native American nicknames, but at least state it correctly. They only play them if it is a conference game, part of a conference agreement or NCAA tournament game. i.e. the bouncyball games against Big East (I think) which are part of Big10 agreement and WCHA games against UND. They'll do it then, even if they lose money on it. :p
Thanx Goldy I knew I would be corrected on this . But you get my point. The whole issue is so messed up. But Im big believer that it should be all or none. You cant have it ok for Florida State but not UND. If UND has to change then so should all of the schools that have indian nicknames. As far as the U OF m policy it just reeks of bs

Re: Fighting Sioux name may change - Murphy's law

So when do North and South Dakota have to change their state names, or are the Dakota Indians not offended by the unautorized use of their name? If Illinois was so worked up about the school's use of Fighting Illini, why is the state allowed to use a derivitive of the tribe name for the state name? I can't believe we waste tax payer money dealing with these types of issues and don;t tell retarded people that have an issue with long standing names of schools and or mascots to go pound sand.

Last I heard, there were no Illini to disapprove of the name...let me know if that's not correct. Also, they actually have a mascot, which, btw, uses Sioux items to make up it's garb as the white guy underneath dances around and attempts to be an Illini at basketball games, when actually he's being a Sioux person.

Re: Fighting Sioux name may change - Murphy's law

I personally like Charles Murphy better. :D

That was a name of a guy we hated on our HS Swimming and Water Polo teams, he went to a different HS, but conference wide he was despised. Reminds me of the facade that Brock Lesner puts on, though he did it all the time and was that type of person.

Re: Fighting Sioux name may change - Murphy's law

I'm afraid the board's goal is to get rid of the nickname. Period.
I'd like to know what board chairman Richie Smith meant when he said this:

“We impose deadlines because UND has to know,” said Richie Smith, the board’s president. “There has to be a decision on this before the school can move forward in any number of areas.”
Move forward in what areas? We keep hearing this, but we get no explanation about what areas he's talking about. I assume he's referring to Division I conference and scheduling. Is there more to it than that? It'd be nice to know.

I suspect that getting into a DI conference and future scheduling are having more influence on the deadlines the board has imposed than the NCAA lawsuit settlement. But that's pure speculation on my part. I really have no idea.

Re: Fighting Sioux name may change - Murphy's law

At some point the silent majority has to start throwing the gauntlet down on special interest groups. I don't see any european countries apologizing for conquering others but here sits America throwing $I'm sorries$ at every race and group who can get a few seconds from FoxNews. We should have hammer punched every mouth that spoke up against the use of our beloved moniker and then strung Kupchella up by his thumbs in that new house next to the coulee. *gasp, trying to catch my breath*

The house Kupchella never lived in because it wasn't finished before he retired as UND president?

While I understand that people have reasons for not liking Kupchella, losing the Fighting Sioux nickname shouldn't be one of them.
