Fighting in college Hockey

Re: Fighting in college Hockey

The fact that the NCAA doesn't tolerate fighting is the primary reason why I enjoy college hockey more than the NHL. Fighting is a bush league sideshow that detracts from the actual game of hokey. If I wanted to watch a couple of neanderthals attempt to rearrange each other's faces I'd watch MMA or UFC.

I hope you like your star player cheap shotted, and the offender cheap shotted back.

Re: Fighting in college Hockey

if your team has no talent, they might as well get in a fight.

i.e. Canisius circa 2002-3...Sioux score goals 6 seconds apart and Canisius' 40 yr old bear gets into a fight with one of the Sioux players.

College hockey should allow fighting...it's all about prepping them for the next stage, right?

Re: Fighting in college Hockey

Fighting still shouldn't be "allowed", but I would think discretion should be made when it comes to retaliation to a cheap shot or other constant hounding. Suspensions are just too much for that. Now, if you're just dropping the gloves to give a show, then yes, I'm fine with the NCAA rule as is. However, if you're going after someone who is just hounding one of your players, that's definitely different.

How I see it:
Immediate fight after a cheap shot with ONLY the player giving the cheap shot, eventual 1v1 confrontation - 5 minute + 10 minute misconduct. Sometimes the two minutes isn't a good enough lesson.
Next shift fight under same conditions - 5 minute + game misconduct. They had their chance, but the player may still need to be taught a lesson.
"Third man in", instigator, et al. - 5 minute + match penalty. This is probably the reason why fighting was outlawed in the first place.
I almost considered any fight during official "rivalry games" to be 5+10, but that's just asking for trouble.

This is definately a problem at the college level. Every time you see scrums and wrestling matches after the whistle, there's always someone getting double teamed and that's just unsporting.

The other big problem: linesmen jumping in too soon. About the only thing more dangerous in a fight is stepping on a glove or a stick.

I believe they jump in too soon because of the fact that fighting is not tolerated within NCAA and want it immediately ceased. Let's also take into account that since there isn't normally fighting in the NCAA's, they don't know how to properly deal with the situation.

Excuse me, he was not a bear, he was a Wookie, and Dirty was in love with him.

Since the majority of these players will never play pro, then yes, if the player is from North Dakota, he should learn valuable skills like bar brawling, cop car escaping, drunken lawn mower tossing, and wasted elevator p!ssing. All the other students should learn to be civil, so they can get a real job after graduation.
