Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Nice weekend for FSU. Congrats. Those had to be a fun couple of games to watch, what with the complete blowout Friday and the spectacular comeback last night.

I have a feeling the CCHA is going to be full of fun weekends this year. Teams are either playing a lot better or a lot worse than most of us thought. At 9-3-2 Ferris is surely playing well, and better than I thought they'd be at this point.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

There's the ranking we deserve!

We all know, if Michigan had the same record we have, playing the same teams we played, they would have never NOT been ranked this entire year.

Ferris:
17th on USCHO.
18th on INCH.
13th on KRACH.
10th on Pairwise/RPI.

Michigan is only 7 points from the top 20! Who is voting for them? I guess Ferris is only 9 national championships away from getting the same treatment.

Oh well...that RPI is fantastic.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

1) Quit worring about Michigan. We'll deal with them soon enough. Besides, I've seen enough of them to have to think that they'll get their ship together sooner rather than later.

2) The last ranking that FSHF listed is the most important, although the third one is intriguing.

3) Are we happy now?

Does Mr. Hennig post on this board?

Dominic Hennig, 18, takes over play-by-play duties for Ferris State hockey radio broadcasts
By Michael Zuidema | The Grand Rapids Press
November 20, 2009, 11:15AM

Really, Dominic Hennig is no different than your average veteran play-by-play radio broadcaster.

He’s devoted to the sport he calls, does his best to inject excitement into every broadcast and has received his share of both negative and positive feedback.

There is one slight difference, however: Hennig just turned 18 years old.

Hennig is in his first season calling hockey games for WWBR-FM (100.9) for Ferris State University -- where he also happens to be a freshman.

Hennig is no neophyte when it comes to calling hockey games, though.

It all started when his brother, Nate, started playing junior hockey in Santa Fe, N.M. During one visit, the team’s regular radio guy didn’t show up and Hennig had a chance to fill in.

Keep in mind he was 14 at the time. Most boys that age are preoccupied with puberty, girls and video games.

“I was so nervous. I’m 14 and I’ve never called a game in my life,” he said. “But I jumped on, and I guess the station had people calling and saying they liked me.”

In fact, the team’s owner liked Hennig so much, she paid to have him fly in from Macomb Dakota High School to call games. On Thursday nights, he would fly to New Mexico. On Sunday afternoons, he’d return to Michigan.

When he graduated -- this was about six months ago -- Hennig planned to enroll in Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts in Southfield to pursue his dream of becoming an NHL broadcaster.

Once again, though, things changed after another visit to his brother, who now is a junior on the Ferris State hockey team.

Hennig attended a game and couldn’t understand why more students weren’t packing the stands at Ewigleben Ice Arena.

“It’s the only Division I sport we have, we’re playing teams like Michigan and Notre Dame and they’re only getting about 1,500 people?” he said. “How is that possible?”

So, Hennig started using Facebook to inform and attract students. He got the athletic department on board and, sure enough, the next game was packed.

He eventually wandered up to the radio booth, where he casually asked longtime announcer Bill Beckwith -- whom Hennig eventually would replace when Ferris State decided to cut costs -- if he could jump onto the broadcast. Beckwith said yes, and the rest is history.

Hennig said he already has spent $1,500 of his own money to update radio equipment, and he still hopes to build more excitement for the hockey program.

He’s also thankful the athletic department gave him this opportunity.

“I was so young,” Hennig said. “I wouldn’t trust some young punk to call a D-I hockey team.”
Ferris State associate athletic director Jon Coles said there was some hesitation about handing over the radio reins to someone who didn’t turn 18 until Oct. 10, but he’s been impressed with Hennig’s enthusiasm.

“He’s inexperienced in terms of calling college games, but he’s still improving and continues to learn on the go,” Coles said. “But he brings a lot of excitement to the broadcast and we’re excited to have that element.”

Even if that youth occasionally is a little over the top.

“In a shootout last weekend, he was jumping up and down and the veteran broadcasters are looking at him like he’s lost his mind,” Coles said. “But you can’t teach passion, and we’d rather have too much than none at all.”

Passion isn’t an issue for Hennig. Neither is motivation nor ambition.

One day, he hopes to write a book about why hockey is more exciting than football and deserves more respect.

At his current rate, that opus should be released sometime around his 21st birthday.

“I love the sport of hockey with a passion,” Hennig said. “People almost get sick of hearing about it."

It isn't over yet but I just want to congratulate you and your team for your performance so far this year.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Lol, Hattrick, we're trying to figure out the same thing. I believe he reads the chat room, but does not post. Because I have E-mailed him a few things that has been discussed about him in the past, and sent him the link as well.

That's a really, really good article on him though.

Stop whining. The only marquee wins (err, ties) so far are @ Miami. You split a series with Canisius and got swept @ Alaska! A good CCHA team in all reality should beat U-Conn, and the Robert Morris series wins are solid, but come on... sweeping BG and Ohio State was a big accomplishment in years past..you're acting like Ferris State hockey should have all these accolades thrown at them for what? One great season in two decades? And you want pollsters to take you seriously, especially with THAT nc schedule??

Earn your way back. So far you have with some solid weekends. Michigan has earned the right to be over rated from their body of work the last 20 seasons, but they can only fall flat so many times before the rankings shake out where they should. Stop worrying about us.

Like I said, talk is cheap right now. Let's discuss in March, even after our teams have played. That's the only time it matters. Hammer is right, worry about your RPI/PWR first.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Also remember, the polls are only what some writers and other media think of your team. Given the state of the media today, you'll have to forgive me for not giving two ****s about what some of these yahoos think.

I'd rather be 9th in the PWR and unranked in the polls than the other way around.

Back-to-Back-to-Back-to-Back Home Sweeps at Ferris State
Uconn
Robert Morris
Bowling Green
Ohio State

Swept the #1 team in the nation, one game on National Television.

We got swept by Alaska, and Bowling Green beat Alaska and Michigan. What does that tell you. Quit with these "look who your playing" lines. This isn't football where the best team wins every game. ANYBODY can BEAT ANYBODY in COLLEGE HOCKEY. A sweep in any series in college hockey is huge, and to go 4 at home, and 1 at the Goggin (Hard place to play im sure) is very good.

At what point will you realize/respect Ferris State? What MORE can they honestly do to get the respect? Those wins above are big. and the loss to Canisius was a 1-0 loss, and the shots were 48-20 in favor of Ferris State. 1 fluke goal. It happens. But again, that shows you, anyone can beat anyone in college hockey.

Michigan lost to Alaska
Michigan got swept by Miami
Michigan got swept by Michigan State
and was STILL NATIONALLY RANKED
and then just lost to BOWLING GREEN, and FINALLY fell off the rankings.

Dude, you are poking a caged animal here.

Your team technically tied Miami, and won 2 gimmick shootouts. Good for the conference standings, but don't mean anything to the national polls. What it did do is boost your RPI, especially since it was on the road. You haven't played anyone else of national prominence, especially on the road, and the only other one you did, you got swept.

This isn't an appendage comparison with Michigan, because, from a historical perspective, you'll lose that one too. Michigan started out over rated. They got beat by three very good teams, plus a close road trip loss to the defending NC, which lent to them staying ranked. The stinker this past weekend got them yanked. They haven't beaten anyone of any great value, so they belong right where they are. If they beat Minnesota and /or Wisconsin this weekend, they may very well be ranked again. If they don't, which is likely, they will have a hard time getting back into the polls. But you see, we don't worry about that. We worry about winning, and let the polls and RPI/PWR take care of itself. If we belong, in the end, we are there. If not, we go home.

This isn't a matter of whether I respect Ferris. I don't rank them, and frankly from a historical standpoint, I have no real issues with your school, other than with you fans that start these sour grapes campaigns every time your team becomes relevant, which hasn't been too often. Just leave my school out of your discussions and we'll be fine.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Poster friend? Fans/Alums/Students are not we. They have no part in the win for Michigan Hockey. They do not get a ring if Michigan Hockey wins the National Tournament.

You pay to watch Michigan Hockey for entertainment, other than that, unless you get a Ring for winning the national championship, then you have nothing to do with the team.

Do you give them money, and scream when they cheer to make it a good atmosphere, and pay for their sticks/equipment/travels, maybe. But that still does not make you APART of the TEAM.

To them, you are just a fan in the stands.

Look, I have no beef with you, but if you want to be a tool, so be it. Just leave my school out of your discussions/crying sessions. You want respect? Act like you've been here before.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

I don't have beef with you either. I just hate when people put we. And Hammer showed that I did it myself, and I apologize for doing it.

It is a big pet peeve of mine.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Believe it or not, I'm going to paraphrase from Dr. Peter McPherson, the former President of Michigan State University, of all places, spoken at my sister's graduation from MSU in 2000, and also at my brother-in-law's graduation in 2001:

"At any point before commencement, you or the university can renounce the other. However, once you walk across this stage and accept your degree, you forever become a part of the university, and neither you nor the school may disassociate yourselves from the other."

or something very similar and along those lines.

I agree with his statement wholeheartedly. Hence, the use of the term "we".

That's a good point.

Do you believe that being apart of the university is being apart of a hockey team who wins a national championship?

Ya, know? I like that quote though.
