Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

All right, let's get back to business, shall we?

We're not ranking. Big *ing Deal. The rankings are useless. I don't want to hear about them again. The PWR comes out in January. That's the one to pay attention to. Mention the rankings in here and you're likely to get red from me.

The creampuff part of the schedule is over. 5-1 is what I thought we should do (I refer you to the first post in this thread, almost at the end of that post). Quite frankly, I'm surprised that we did it. Now conference play opens up in a place where, frankly, we have not played well: Alaska. Alaska was quite similar to Ferris last season. Both teams struggled mightily to score, as UA's leading scorer had a whopping 22 points last year and only two guys had 10 goals. We were roughly in the same boat. The big difference last year was the goaltending. Chad Johnson was outstanding and was a huge key to their success. He is gone. Surprisingly, their goaltending has been nearly as good this season.

Ferris' biggest problem continues to be the penalty minutes. We've played 6 games and have taken 4 CFB majors and have racked up more PIM than I would care to admit. The goalscoring has been spotty at times, which I expected (getting shut out by Canisius should not happen), and the goaltending has been very good.

Over the past couple years Ferris has had the tendency to throw a ton of shots on net but only put in 2-3 a night. I've seen more than my share of 46 SOG, 2-goal nights. Unfortunately, I think we're looking at the same thing this weekend. A couple of 2-1 or 3-2 games, but I think Ferris flies out of Alaska with a split. Oh, and more penalty minutes.

I'm with Hammer. This team is exactly where I would expect them (or any other CCHA team) to be after this non-conference schedule. I do, however, think we have the speed to put the big ice to our advantage. Anything less than a split will be a disappointment.

That being said, check back with me next week regarding my thoughts on the future of this season.

Something just occurred to me. Why the hell is every Saturday home game a 5:05 start?

Not quite, our two home TV games vs. Michigan and NMU start later. So far the Sat. attendance hasn't been as bad as I thought. I thought it would be a lot lower than Friday games and it looked like it should have been, but the box scores tell a different story. The one outlier was the first UConn game when student attendance was free. I will ask about it next weekend for sure.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Ferris has experimented with 5:05 starts in the past and said they got good feedback, for the most part. The theory is that they'll get more people to attend both games instead of just one or the other. With the earlier start time, the games will finish around 7:30ish and people can still go out to dinner, to a movie or whatever and have the option for a traditional Saturday night outing, as opposed to having both of their weekend nights devoted to hockey. Michigan State is doing the same thing.

The Michigan and Northern Michigan games were originally 5:05 starts, but were changed to accomodate TV.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Well, I knew it was going to happen soon, and it did last night. The CFB's caught up to us and led directly to the loss of a game. 1-1 game, Alexander takes a 5-CFB. Alaska gets the game winning goal late on the power play, and adds an empty netter to make it a 3-1 final. If you give a good team 5 minutes on the power play due to your own stupidity, and you're going to pay for it.

What is it going to take for this team to pull their heads out of their collective asses and quit taking majors? We've played 7 games and have at least 5 CFB penalties. This is absolutely inexcusable, and last night it cost us.

Well, that didn't go the way we wanted it to...

Swept in Alaska. I didn't figure that there would be many goals at all this weekend, and I wasn't disappointed. Friday night we were done in partially to another CFB major that led to the GWG being scored on the ensuing power play. Saturday, I suspect that we just lost to a better team. That's gonna happen once in a while to everybody.

It can't happen this weekend. Bowling Green is in town. I fully expect a sweep. Bowling Green is probably the least talented team in the CCHA. Ferris is still the most undisciplined team in the country, at 24.6 PIM/game. We've got to get that in check in a hurry and bury the teams that we're supposed to.

For me it comes down to put pucks in the net .Big shot totals mean nothing if we don't score. Penalties were a factor last weekend but let's be realistic it will be every weekend if we don't cut down the time in the box.
Ferris needs to get their goal scorers some open looks and hope that they score .We have some guys who can finish and some freshman who we hope can finish. Let's hope we come into our own this weekend and light the lamp a few more times.

I've preached for a couple of years for those of us here to support this program. Today I got a brochure in the mail for the FSU Blueline Club. Now I'll admit, I haven't been a member for probably 5 years. I had no idea that they even had my address. But the brochure arrived, addressed to me, nonetheless.

In the past few years I've not been in the position to make any kind of donation to the program. It rings mightly hollow for me to hammer people about supporting the program without leading with my checkbook first. That has changed. I'm back in.

That least talented team in the league played pretty well @ UNO. I think this is a more important series than some people think, for FSU.

Pun intended? :p

Absolutely. But BG has had real problems scoring goals this season, and our goaltending has been very good to date, even this past weekend. If we can stay out the box (might as well be teaching the Amish how to turn on the lights there) and put the puck in the net, we should walk away with 2 wins.

+/- BG will have two power plays before the 12 minute mark of the first?

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Ferris has the ability to go "Back-to-Back-to-Back" Home Sweeps if they want to this weekend.

Sweep vs. UCONN
Sweep vs. Robert Morris
Sweep vs. Bowling Green ??????

If that doesn't raise home attendance, than I have no idea what will. Think we'll be back on the bubble with a home sweep Hammer/Bueller?

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

The bubble for what? Rankings?

1) I don't care. The rankings mean absolutely nothing. 16 teams make the tournament. Who cares if you're ranked #19?
2) Even if the rankings did matter, voters aren't going to be impressed with three sweeps of teams that might struggle to win a combined 40 games, especially after getting swept by Fairbanks and a loss to Canisius.

Again, worry about the PWR in January. That's what determines who goes where after the CCHA tournament. The rankings are something for idiots to run their mouths about.

This is your last warning. Hammer will start passing out red reps from this point forward. That is all.:D

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

No, he's fine at the moment. :D He's just trying to feel his way through this place.

Again, the rankings that you see now are worthless. They have no bearing whatsoever on who gets in the tournament. These same rankings will also be worthless in March. The committee doesn't sit in a proverbial smoke-filled room and talk about who gets in the tournament and look at rankings. The PWR comes out in early January. That one is the one to watch as it relates to tournament chances. The selection committee essentially takes the auto-qualifiers (the ones that win the conference tournaments), adds in the next however many teams in line according to PWR to get to 16 teams, splits the thing in to four regions, and you have your tournament bracket. That's it. That's the process. There are some rules about how certain teams go where (the biggest is the one that states that a team hosting a regional must be placed in that bracket if they make the tourney), but in a nutshell, that's how it works. It's a pretty transparent process.

While I agree with Hammer with regards to the rankings and who makes the tournament, I think they hold some merit for getting butts in the seats at Ewigleben. Die-hard, sorostitutes or band-wagon makes no difference to me, butts in the seats help the program and the buzz generated by being ranked would help get people out to the games.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Certainly. But at the same time people aren't going to come out to watch them eat Robert Morris, UConn, and Bowling Green, unless Ferris has a team like we did 7 years ago. Northern Michigan, Western Michigan and Ohio State, maybe. But not the first three.
