Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty box

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

Odd hearing Zach Redmond on the radio since he was still hurt, but I suppose it didn't matter getting that first win. Great game by the defense to pull it off. Sounded like Western had a decent student crowd there, but the community sounded like a low showing. Radio said some of the regular seats were still there.

Good start. Hopefully it carries over and they end this in two.

I also heard the interview with the AD. If he thinks WMU is vulgar, he needs to go back to Sunday School and stay there.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

Yeah, I heard that too. Also heard him mention trying to soften us. Boy, that's just great news moving forward...

Wild, exciting game. Could have gone either way.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

Another year and another OT loss in the playoffs. It seemed like a very even series, but I think home ice gave the Broncos the boost they needed. Congrats to them, I'll be cheering them on next weekend.

Still, not a bad showing by the dogs though - especially given that their captain was sidelined. I was impressed by the comeback in sunday's game. Overall I think this team exceeded expectations, and laid the groundwork for another highly competitive season next year. With Redmond sitting we got a little preview of what next year might look like, and I'm not dissapointed. Just a few thoughts: It seems Ouhlette might be breaking through as a scorer, especially on the power play. With this years freshman class consisting of mainly forwards I was expecting Czarnowczan to be an after thought at D, but I thought he was by far the best of the rookie class - he will do well in years to come. Props to coach Daniels for making the switch ups with Schmit and Graham, both are clearly contributing more now than they would have at their former positions - I just wish he would have done it sooner. Offense was atrocious this year, but we're loaded with young forwards who will do good things for the program over the next couple of years. Defense will miss zach and scott, but still has all the pieces in place to be very solid next year. I can't do a season review without mentioning Nagle - he's been great. However, Nelson has shown he's very capable of playing at that level as well, and I expect to have one of the top goaltenders in the league/country again next year. good season boys

This was the game vs Northern at the Joe all over again. Coming from down 3 to force OT at 4-4 only to have a bad fail cost the playoff goal. Really rough way to end on a defenseman just falling over, leading to a goal. The first period was brutal, Nagle let in two who shouldn't, but the Dogs really stepped up late in the game to get back in it.

This team just probably took another 2 years off my life from the heart stress. So close again. If any Western fans are reading this thread, cherish this opportunity guys. You never know when you'll make it back.

I agree with all this. Well said. Sad to see Nagle go...he ends his career as one of the best to guard the pipes at FSU. Nelson is a great replacement though.

Really thought we were going to the Joe again, and this will hurt for a while.

BTW to the frequent posters I didn't die I've been reading everyday just needed a break from talking...

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

I spoke with a few of the players who will be returning for next season. They are really excited for the offense that the new recruiting class will be bringing in.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

It is sad to see the season come to an end, pretty good run for the bulldogs, but it is fun to see where the senior players are headed. I keep watching for news when redmond signed, I am hoping nagle signs an NHL contract, Wietcha, embach, henning potentially could sign pro deals.

Congrads to Nagle!! Well 3 of the 4 listed are signed. I wouldn't hold my breath on the 4th person you mentioned though...

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

Hi.

I've stayed away for the most part this season, since there have been other posters who are much closer to the program than I currently am, and have really stepped up and contributed a whole lot more than I can. I think someone has to weigh in here on our behalf. Since I've been here the longest, I'll go first.

The CCHA ended last season with 11 teams. Michigan, MSU and OSU will leave in two years for the BTHC. Miami is going to the NCHC. NMU appears headed to the WCHA, and Notre Dame and WMU aren't likely to hang around, either. Who knows what Lake is up to.

So, at best, 7 teams are gone from the CCHA, leaving us, LSSU (for the moment), BG and UAF. Lake and UAF could conceivably join the WCHA, although I don't know how likely that is, and who knows what BG is thinking at the moment. We're left without a conference, and from what I can tell, no prospects outside of poaching a few AHA teams.

Everyone else has danced around what I'm about to say. I'm not going to. I've been accused many times of being too pessimistic about this program. Well, I'm going to do it again. I think we're in big, big trouble. I don't see how the WCHA is going to want us, and, frankly, I don't think Ferris supporters are going to fill Ewigleben to see us play Robert Morris, Niagara, UAH, or any other schools of that magnitude when they're used to seeing Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State. We played UConn recently (this season or last, and I'm not looking it up right now) and barely drew 1,500 one night and 1,200 the next. I don't see any other potential future CCHA additions improving those numbers significantly. Sure, we'll get the away dates at Yost and Munn from time to time, but is that going to be enough to keep the fans in Big Rapids interested in this team?

1975 was the first year of Ferris State Hockey. The 2014-2015 season would mark the 40th anniversary of the program. At this point, my WAG is that any hockey we see past that season is gravy for us at this point in the game. Let's cherish the next few seasons, guys. I don't know how many we have left.

Hammer, I know how you feel. LSSU is in serious trouble as well. Everything would of been fine had the stupid NCHC never happened. Most likely WMU and ND join the NCHC. UAF will most likely join NMU in the WCHA and stay at seven teams, leaving just Ferris, LSSU and BGSU. I'm certain UAH would join along with 2-4 AHA schools and still have enough teams for the autobid. But the question is will the fans still come out and support Ferris and LSSU playing lower level teams?

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

Our non-con this past season, with attendance totals. Official capacity is 2,493:

St Lawrence: 1,539 & 1,244 - home opener
Al-Huntsville: 1,258 & 1,490 - February 11-12. We went into that weekend 14-12-4

09-10 non-con, same format:

UConn: 1,844 & 1,091 (home opener, Sat. game was a 5 PM start)
RMC: 1,129 & 1,146 (the next weekend, Sat. game was a 5 PM start)

Sure, the Saturday 5 PM games two seasons ago took the home attendance and fired it straight into the toilet (a subject that I beat to death a long time ago and do not care to revisit since that problem has been rightfully corrected), but that doesn't explain the horrid attendance outside of the 2009-2010 opening game. Folks, these are the type of games that are going to replace the home dates with Michigan and Michigan State. It's nearly a direct trade-off. I think we have our answer as it relates to what is going to happen to attendance if the CCHA becomes AHA West.
