Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty box

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

And honestly, I don't think the University would care. I really think they'd rather have a tiny, "clean" section than to have a full section of "trouble makers." They've gone as far as sending out a phony message on Facebook from Redmond telling everyone to clean it up.

Of course, the thing that will make them take notice is money. If people don't renew season tickets, that might get their attention. I remember years where the attendance of the UAH games this weekend was the norm. But they just don't get it.

Well, it's going to take an empty student section for a few games, then. I'm not sure the students will go through with something like this, but an empty Section L against Michigan should get someone's attention.

The "extension of Big Rapids High" mentality has to end.

For the record, I draw the line at two words: F-bombs and a certain 10-letter bomb that starts with C. And yes, I see the irony in that.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

Even words that begin with A and B are now "too obscene" Granted, I can hear them on just about any network TV show during primetime...

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

I'm telling you. Silent or empty are your best options. Either that or everyone goes off the rails and really gets vulgar. This is a fight over control. A group of 18-22 year olds should win this fight going away if they really want it.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

I'm with you, but like I've said, I know a lot of the people who sit in the front row, and they aren't going to do anything about it, and they aren't going to listen to me either.

Sad panda. I'm really interested how bad they try to crack down with Notre Dame, since it'll be a big game. I almost hope they try to crack down and hard, it'll probably take something extreme from the university to actually create some action from the students.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

If the leaders of the student section are not willing to fight back, then they're as good as neutered already. The university has won.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

That's a depressing thought. I sure hope you're wrong. But I don't think you are. Next year will also be interesting simply because many of those in the front are graduating. Maybe that will help things. Or, maybe that makes it worse.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

Either way one side is going to have to suck it up and concede and the sooner it happens the better. The program is going to need all the support it can get in the coming years. Frankly, I'm praying to God that the administration gives up this witch-hunt because the raucous student section was what made Ewigleben great (and yes, I used the past tense on purpose).

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

This whole thing sounds like it's right out of the playbook of Helen Popovich, the president who almost bankrupted the university in the 90's by trying to turn the place into an 8,500 student college. And she almost did it.

And bueller, again, it's up to the students to decide where this is headed. You know where I stand.

If they kill the student section, Ferris does not have a hockey program in 5-7 years.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

After watching people get tossed for several games now, the thought of sitting down and being dead silent for at least a weekend series has crossed my mind as an effective measure for students.

Unfortunately, that hurts the team and the home ice advantage, but I have to agree with what is being stated here by several of you. From what it sounds likes, it's down right ridiculous. For the life of me, I cannot remember who, but one team had some restrictions placed on them and started welcoming the opposing team with applause, positive chants, and happy signs in mockery. I think that's funny but a silent student section would be more effective in the long run.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

Actually, I think cheering the other team plays right into the hands of the administration. The irony of it all would zoom right over their head like a fighter jet.

Given who we had in our student section, there's not a snowball's chance in hell that we would have allowed this to happen. No way.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

Like I stated before, this Notre Dame series in my mind will end up being the "final judgment." The administration seems to back down a bit for big games (Mainly because it's harder to control a full crowd) but I think they'll go all out.

It'll be an interesting weekend for many different reasons...

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

It's a shame this wasn't brought to this board two months ago. We could have gotten creative.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

It's gotten worse as time went on. From what I understand, at the start of the year, both sides met and came to some concessions, and some chants were eliminated. (Some deserving, the "Goalie Name, Sucks D***",) with the university saying it was a fair compromise.

Slowly but surely, they've poked more and more. Everyone is too afraid of getting tossed or banned from games, no one wants to go to the student conduct office and deal with the crap they've threatened. So it's just slowly happened.

I was surprised how aggressive they were this weekend, a lot of the chants just fell flat and completely died, one because of a small crowd, and two, because no one wanted to get tossed.

One thing that would really help the students out if one of the bigger boosters would come out being on the Students side here, and make it a point to tell em to chill out on the kids a little. Its Sports, not a library.

That, or perhaps have a few of the old guard invade the Students. Get in there and mix it up with some of the leaders. Regale them with stories, like "No Thumbs!" and other stuff as well, like perhaps tell em a few old cheers that you did back in the day. The cleaner versions of them perhaps, but the point here is to keep the kids cheering and roudy.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

I haven't heard "ice cold beer" in months, for example.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

That's poor.

The "sucks ----" chant was one of ours. So was 1-2-3-4. *shrug* I think we actually started the game with those two. :o

I wonder if the writer for the Pioneer is still reading this?

You'll be proud to know I started those both at the Joe last year lol.

The ones they've been going after hard lately are the classic "Drop It" and the "Know Your Role" towards the goalie. Which is a shame, those are two of my personal favorites. They cut out some of the spelled chants too.

I wonder when they will decide that "S-E-X" and "C-O-N-D-O-M" are too dirty. Sigh.

Re: Ferris State Hockey '10-11-Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the penalty

And we're back.

I wonder when they will decide that "S-E-X" and "C-O-N-D-O-M" are too dirty. Sigh.

Mark my words. Those are next.

Know-Your-Role must have arrived after I left. We did the Drop It-Thank You-Asshole as well.

Quick story. Our sophomore year (93-94) Blaine Lacher was in goal for Lake State. He got run over on a play at the net and didn't get up. The back-up goaltender's last name was Sass. We spent the remainder of the weekend entertaining ourselves with the chant of "SASS! SASS! TAKES IT IN THE ASS!" It was just about the only thing we had to keep our attention that weekend, as LSSU handed us our lunch both nights.
