Favorite Christmas...err, Non-Denominational Winter Holiday Music

Re: Favorite Christmas...err, Non-Denominational Winter Holiday Music

The new Yo-Yo Ma album is very subtle and not over the top with seasonal music. Very well done and fine guests with him.

Songs of Joy & Peace

but please could someone just put a stake through the body of Burl Ives so he stays dead for the other 10-11 months a year and no one hears that voice ever again....

The Christmas Blues -- Dean Martin

Used to be my ace-in-the-hole for obscure Christmas songs, but then it shows up on that new Bob Dylan album. :o

Re: Favorite Christmas...err, Non-Denominational Winter Holiday Music

Grew up with Dean, Frank, Perry, Bing etc. on the record player as the family decorated and celebrated so they are always going to be what comes to mind when I think Christmas music...Springsteen's "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" was great in concert and therefore is a favorite too.

Re: Favorite Christmas...err, Non-Denominational Winter Holiday Music

I saw Springsteen in concert at the old Boston Garden do "Santa Claus..." but without the E Street Band and Clarence there doing the sax bridge and singing "you'd better be good for goodness' sake..." Really, when you hear the Big Man tell you that, you da*n well better be good. It is in heavy rotation right now on the Bruce channel on XM sat radio.

Speaking of concerts, any live performance of the Brian Setzer Christmas Rocks! Extravaganza will be a good take. Saw him at Foxwoods/MGM last weekend and the big band was ... awesome. Sadly, most of the East Coast dates have passed, but those of you on the West Coast, go and enjoy !

Generally, I like a lot of older stuff - Andy Williams, Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis. Also have some newer stuff like Diana Krall and Sarah McLachlan, but the older songs are my favorite. White Christmas, Silver Bells and I'll Be Home for Christmas are probably my favorites.

A woman after my own heart. I mentioned Bing, Nat and Johnny earlier and forgot about Perry and Andy.

For those of you that like instrumental jazz, Peter White has a very nice Christmas CD. Boney James, David Benoit and Dave Koz, too.

Nothing beats Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, as sung by Chrissie Hynde with The Pretenders. Amazing voice.

Another by The Pretenders-2000 Miles
Father Christmas-The Kinks
Another Father Christmas, this one by Greg Lake
Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth-David Bowie and Bing Crosby
Little Drummer Boy-Joan Jett
Christmas Wrapping-The Waitresses
Run Run Rudolph-Keith Richards
Santa Claus is Coming to Town-Springsteen
Do They Know It's Christmas-Band Aid

Probably a ton that don't come to mind right away.

This:
I used to like Christmas music more, but I've almost completely lost my taste for it, no thanks to radio stations that do 24-hr. marathons from November 1st to midnight on December 26th.

As long as no one is judging, since it is seasonal music... I may have listened to, in passing of course, a couple of Taylor Swift songs that were actually very well done.

Besides that... can't go wrong with Mad Russian's Christmas by TSO, or the 12 Day of Christmas by Straight No Chaser.
