Just beat me to it Squarebanks...

That is probably a good sign. We just have to hope there are no erupting volcanoes, rumbling earthquakes, early freeze warnings, and that his luggage also accompanies him on his flight. Other than that were good to go.

I found it interesting that the Nooks spent about $2.4m on hockey operations last year, second highest in the CCHA. Not surprising really, just interesting. It will also be interesting to see if there are opportunities to show community support during his visit.

I'm sure McLeod has been to Anchorage before, but this may be his first opportunity to actually visit Alaska.

I agree with you, I mean the head of the WCHA is visiting Fairbanks, and the U in August. UAF has "applied" one way or another.

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association is seeking to survive by replacing the major schools that have abandoned its ranks with smaller schools from the East Coast. CCHA officials met Tuesday with Mercyhurst, Canisius, Niagara and Robert Morris.

Mr Cole may need a slight lesson in geography. None of the schools talking to the CCHA is any closer to the east coast than Fairbanks is to Anchorage. Canisius and Niagara are in the Buffalo area, about 375 miles away. Robert Morris is in Pittsburgh and Mercyhurst is in Erie, PA.

Anything on the "other side" of the Mississippi is the east coast, ...or close enough.

Clearly he was talking about the east coast of the great lakes. :p

Or maybe he was imagining a future world with such significant sea level rises that the coastal region will be many hundreds of miles further inland.

Funny, I hail from Pennsylvania. I have lived in Alaska for over 10 yrs now. Growing up, we always said we were from the "East coast" when out of the state (visiting friends and family in western states). The term “east coast,’ is a just a generalized term. Why are you upset and splitting hairs over this? You truly cannot be that bored.

Fun Fact Time: Landlocked UAF is no closer than 350 miles from ANY ocean. But they do have the only Ocean Sciences college in the state. They're getting a new 100 million dollar boat. Isn't it keen? It'll be parked in a slip in Seward ... just a scant 127 miles from UAA and 484 miles from UAF.

UAA is actually a school on the Pacific Ocean btw ... just clarifying.

This goes back to the Fairbanks writer calling Canisius and Niagara (both in Buffalo, NY) and Robert Morris (Pittsburgh) and Mercyhurst (Erie, PA) "East Coast Schools." None of them is any closer to the East Coast than Fairbanks is to Anchorage.

We're really arguing about this? They need to hurry up and come out with some new info :)

For what it's worth, I've always considered the East Coast to be a region, not a narrow strip of land directly adjacent to the ocean. Do they have to be able to see the ocean from their porch to qualify?

Plus Pittsburg is only a couple hours from the ocean, how is it not east coast?:D

So what you're saying is because Anchorage is no closer to Fairbanks (~350 miles) then any of the schools mentioned are to the "east coast", that Anchorage is really not in the "north." I like the way you think. Personally, I agree with you. Anchorage is really not Alaska either. But up here 350 mi is considered in the neighborhood and Anchorage gets to pretend.

And as Donald mentioned, we already have a pretty impressive School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences program and a state of the art 261 ft oceangraphic research vessel under construction (~ $200m project). I'm not sure but I think we had to give up an on-campus hockey rink to get it. ;)

Now that we have settled the "east coast" delimma, if it's a really slow week we should contemplate Denver's geographic position in the hockey world. I realize in certain minds it's a big circle and they are in the center, but is the center of that circle really in the west? Just asking. :)
