Faribanks Daily: Rumors of the WCHA announcing two applicants this week? NMU and ??

Re: Faribanks Daily: Rumors of the WCHA announcing two applicants this week? NMU an

I have said the WCHA is likely to be MSUM, SCSU, BSU, MTU, NMU, UAA, UAF, MSU-Moorhead because all indications from LSSU (the school, not the fans) is that they really aren't interested in the WCHA.

My source in the LSSU athletic department reports they are doing everything they can to get the hockey team into the WCHA. The lack of a public comment in that vein could have to do with saving face, in case they are rejected, or not wanting to undermine the CCHA as it struggles for its survival.

Here's what I know ...

UAF into the WCHA isn't a done deal but it's quite close. An eight team conference is their preference right now and I'll confirm that the 8th team is pretty much up in the air still.

With all this craziness going on who is the 7th team? I am under the impression NMU is the 6th team.

UA_ would be the 7th team.

Thanks. That is what I thought. IMO, we probably will not see the 7th and 8th team until sometime in the Fall. Other dominos need to fall first before anymore announcements.

The domino that really needs to fall is Notre Dame. If for some reason they are unable to go to NCHC or Hockey East, then I'm sure the WCHA would snap them up in a heartbeat. Once Notre Dame goes somewhere, UAF and maybe another team would head to the WCHA and the CCHA will add the AHA teams.

You gave a perfect example why the urgency of MSU-Mo finding more money within the next three months. Some believe it is a pipe dream but crazier things have happened.

Re: Faribanks Daily: Rumors of the WCHA announcing two applicants this week? NMU an

Dear all:

I have a few comments:

1. I am rooting for LSSC to get into the WCHA. The 3 MN teams and 3 Yooper teams seem like a great base to me (how about a MN Cup or Yooper Cup for the schools who win the most conference games? Sorry).

2. BSU & SCSU are the same distance from the Sault, perhaps SCSU is a few miles shorter. The 164 miles beyond Marquette should not be prohibitive. The Michigan roads are lousy, but still not the end of the world (although it may seem like it from the MN perspective).

3. This whole Moorhead thing is obnoxious. They are an underfunded mid-bottom tier DII athletic program. In the Fargo-Moorhead area (who said there's 200,000 people there?), Moorhead is the #3 visible college/university behind NDSU and DIII Concordia. The FM area might support NDSU hockey, BUT Moorhead is just hot air. The Moorhead president had the audacity to say that "the WCHA may need us as much as we need them" (College Hockey News July 15, 2011). I assure you, the word "Moorhead" was NEVER mentioned at the WCHA AD's meetings. Minnesota State Moorhead playing it's home games in North Dakota is too much for me. They can say all they want about an economic impact in the FM area BUT NDSU needs more to get where they want to be and surely their current boosters will not defect to take a chance on Moorhead. There simply is not enough $ to go around.

4. The MN WCHA schools are slow to say one of their own is dopey (Moorhead is also part of the MnSCU System versus the UM system that Minneapolis & Duluth are part of) , so you can't expect them to say so and make Moorhead look bad (they can do that on their own).

5. To be cited in the Fargo Forum that Moorhead is ready to hire a great coach and spend all they need to do it is absurd. The MnSCU system does not allow that to happen. Market-wise, the 3 MN WCHA coaches are substantially underpaid because of the limitations of the mandated MnSCU IFO Contract (Moorhead's in the same system).

Enough from me for the moment. Best regards, Andrew J. Carter

I was no fly on the wall when the remaining AD's met and have no proof per se ... but they were discussed.

Breckenridge, MN has competed for the North Dakota High School State Hockey Championship for years.

Re: Faribanks Daily: Rumors of the WCHA announcing two applicants this week? NMU an

McLeod stated this week on radio that they pretty much wanted 8 teams, possibly more. He said they have called schools that are interested and also received calls from other schools. He hinted that Fairbanks could be number 7 and they wouldn't add a 8th until ND made it's decision. At that point he said things would move fast. I got the impression LSSU and Western Mich were the most likely. He also stated Morehead was too far out to even talk about. So, it looks like ND's decision will cause the next feeding frenzy.

Re: Faribanks Daily: Rumors of the WCHA announcing two applicants this week? NMU an

Very true. Too bad they are in the East with all the traditional hockey powers.

They took care of that problem this year. A quick check of the MSHSL site and the Blades dumped those stalwarts and are now registered to play in Section 6A...with the second rate teams of Alexandria, Fergus and Little Falls.:D

(They could just be included because the competitive sections reset, but I don't remember seeing them before.)

I've only followed this peripherally but is ND really considering the wcha? I've only read of them trying to jones their way into the b1g, which wont happen without football, or if that fails nchc or he.

Re: Faribanks Daily: Rumors of the WCHA announcing two applicants this week? NMU an

The head of the WCHA is quoted as saying the conference won’t decide until they see what the Irish do. Nobody seems to think that ND wants in the WCHA, just that what they do is the key to which of many contingency plans everyone else is likely to follow.

Well I do know that they play an East Region schedule, but I do believe they play a lot of Minnesota teams. I think they play in ND because they didn't have enough players and co-oped with Whapeton.

Does Notre Dame really need to be with any conference? Maybe they can take the same path as the football team and just be independent. With smaller conferences now there's a lot of NC games that need to be filled by some of these high profile schools. I'm sure if they were on their own they would be able to establish some sort of consistent scheduling with most (if not all) of the Big 10 schools. Throw in a annual home and home series with Miami and lets say BC and now the schedule is really starting to fill up.

Plus, it saves them from the commitment of not having to travel to the schools they don't want to play.
