Evaluating Frozen Four host Tampa Bay

Re: Evaluating Frozen Four host Tampa Bay

Any word on cities in the running post-2014?

Rumors are between Nashville and Dallas.

I actually enjoy the idea of warm weather FFs. It's almost like a bowl game and almost a reward for fans for driving on snowy roads to cold rinks all winter. If they always put it in Florida, I'd be thrilled. Screw the cold.

I think Nashville would be a very good host. Like Tampa, lots of stuff to do and see on the off day, plenty of restaurants, bars and hotels within walking distance of the arena and reasonable travel arrangements and the strong probability of great weather.

I agree about the warm weather. It's a great way to celebrate the end of a long season/winter.

Re: Evaluating Frozen Four host Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay, surprisingly, has fantastic hockey fans.

Actually, hockey has a widespread fan base. Consider NHL teams in Raleigh, NC, Sunrise, FL, Tampa, FL, Anaheim CA, Dallas, TX, Los Angeles CA, Phoenix AZ, San Jose CA - all non-traditional hockey areas with broad fan bases and three Stanley Cups in the last nine years. We hockey fans tend to be quite parochial, to the detriment of our sport. We should advocate the expansion of hockey into new schools and new areas. Demanding more and better T.V. network coverage of college hockey will accelerate this expansion. It's a great sport, and more people should be able to enjoy it.

I'm not going to name names - no wish to insult fans of certain cities/states...

That said, I'd put this year's FF ahead of several sites I've been to over the past dozen+ years or so. They did a nice job. Hopefully they can get back in the rotation at some point.

No self-interest here. I'm moving out of the Tampa area this summer.

A lot of Northerners (especially Northeast northerners) have moved to Florida over the years (which is why the Red Sox and Yankees fans dominate there). You could probably have a FF in Miami and have a similar result as Tampa. Personally I loved it and thought they did a much better job than Boston, Detroit, etc.

Re: Evaluating Frozen Four host Tampa Bay

If not, the Reds are a short drive away in Cincy.

ps- Anyone know why the Pitt FF is a week later next year? (Apr 11-13)
With the leap year, the calendar is a week off for everything. conference tournaments are a week later, etc.

Re: Evaluating Frozen Four host Tampa Bay

Well I'm back and what a great way to end the Easter weekend. I actually missed my early flight as my GPS took me to the wrong place but ended up getting back early as my connecting flight from Atlanta left early so I landed in Boston at 3:00 PM!

I was partying with some Gopher and Badger fans until early this AM. They each congratulated me after the game with a handshake. Only had a few hours sleep before heading to the airport in Orlando.

I thought the city of Tampa did a great job and the facility was superb. Plenty to do around here, nice weather, easy access to roads, bars and restaurants nearby within walking distance from the Forum. I never saw such signage for a Frozen Four like this. I would have no problems coming back and they host again. :)

Just because a city has an NHL team doesn't mean they have a great fan base. For example, the Phoenix Coyotes.

Tremendous host city with signs and banners here. Businesses really into it. Never mind the weather.

Have it here every other year. Seriously.

Demand more and better TV coverage? And just what do you have to demand with? The potential for blockbuster ratings? The high profit margin that college hockey would bring to the network? I'm as big a college hockey fan as there is. But the numbers aren't there to support such a demand. ESPN has a long term contract with the NCAA by the way.

the confetti at the end was a nice touch. but maybe i'm biased

Re: Evaluating Frozen Four host Tampa Bay

We had a great time there- did a whole week of vacation, starting with a 5 night cruise that I've been posting about in another thread.

Tampa did a great job as hosts- everyone seemed to know about the FF, and welcomed us wherever we went. We'd do that again in a heartbeat.

Re: Evaluating Frozen Four host Tampa Bay

I think all of us in the Tampa Bay area would jump at the chance to host the tournament again.
