End of Verbal Agreements??

Re: End of Verbal Agreements??

Someone get me some popcorn and a beer, this is getting interesting!

Me too. What confuses me the most is that I regard Minnesota as South Canada. ;) So why do their fans have these problems? :D

Actually, I can see that state schools should prefer students and thus hockey players from their own state, but that shouldn't be the case for private and church schools.

Re: End of Verbal Agreements??

One thing that is being overlooked is how such a change would effect US junior hockey. One of the USHL's big selling points to talented young players is they can play high quality junior hockey yet still maintain their NCAA eligibility in the process. If NCAA opens things up to the CHL, the USHL in its current form would really be hurt by it. As I said on GPL, I doubt Hakstol made many friends in the USHL with his comments.

I also think it is rather knee jerk to make any drastic changes when the reality is we aren't talking about a large percentage of players that renege on college for the CHL. Yeah, it happens but considering the overall percentage of players that do it compared to those that keep their commitment, it's not really worth making drastic changes for such a minority of situations. It has happened to other coaches more than it has happened to Hakstol yet they seem to just deal with it and move on.

The idea of the "gentleman's agreement" has always been a little iffy to me. College sports are so competitive and make a lot of money for teams that I think the whole gentleman's thing is going to disappear at some point anyway. And you are kidding yourself if you think it is going to be the big name programs that get hurt by such a change. The smaller programs are the ones that are going to feel the pain most if that agreement goes away. That's just common sense.

Very well said Hammy.

Re: End of Verbal Agreements??

Someday Minnesota's xenophobia of the outside hockey world will be its undoing. Minnesota has been good at producing mediocre to average NHL players. Outside of Frank Brimsek has any Minnesota player made it to the Hall of Fame? Of course what Minnesotan would care? They have their own hall of fame.

There are 81 US players in the OHL alone and about 150 in the CHL. You can bet most were pursued by NCAA schools.

Its not about whats wrong with Canada, hell half my family is from Winnipeg and still living there and or Warroad. Its about doing your part in supporting the growth of the sport in the US. I understand most of the US couldn't care less, however most Minnesotans do. This is an age old argument between a Goph fan and a Sioux fan, polar opposite fanbases and programs.

Thats a ridulously stupid question from someone very unfamiliar with hockey.

I'll give you a tip, go look at the HHOF records, then go take a look at the names on the SC. And then explain to us why MN leads the nation in D1 players and Pro players by a landslide (that includes MA and MI).

Outside of the top 3 MN, MA, MI theres a steep drop.

Instead of bagging on MN, how about taking a look at what YOUR state does for the sport

Minnesota has two players in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Francis Charles Brimsek and Moose Goheen. And it sounds like you've got the problem (with Minnesotans), not the other way around.

Re: End of Verbal Agreements??

As for CHL eligibility, here's a good legal argument as to why CHLers should be allowed to play in the NCAA....

http://law.shu.edu/Students/academi...t/Issues/upload/Vol20_Bianchi_Formatted-2.pdf

This article is a must-read for anyone trying to understand the NCAA/Major Junior Hockey controversy.
In a nutshell, the author argues that a minor (under age 18) earning the handsome sum of $35 a week for playing ice hockey on a major junior team in Canada should not be considered a professional hockey player.
