Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

All whiskey has gone up in price. Around here, though, the price of Jack has gone down, while Evan Williams has gone up. And Powers Irish whiskey is now more expensive than Jameson.
I realize the whole supply/demand thing but a 20% jump is a beitch. With the exception of Evan for mixing, my whiskey tastes can get rather expensive. I may shift to gin for the summer months. For some reason, I prefer cheap gins. It's a throw back to my undergrad days. I want the juniper to jump right out of the glass and slap me in the face.

For a short while, you couldn't get Laphroaig 25YO scotch. The demand grew that much. I agree it's a pain, but the demand has gone crazy the last few years.

And yes, Evan is the only bourbon I mix, unless it's a Maker's Old Fashioned. Buffalo Trace, Maker's, and Elijah Craig are my normal bourbons.

3 Sheeps Hoedown. According to the beer snobs and 3 Sheeps: 10% imperial black wheat brewed with cherries, ancho chilies, and chipotle chilies.

All the yes. I'd put this against the Dragon's Milk/Chiles.

In Louisville the past few days and gotta say we're loving it - really nice city.

It's a bummer that I'm not into bourbon as the bourbon culture here is off the charts. Have perused a few high end liquor boutiques (my term - but it seems to fit) and the selection is wonderful and varied.

A lot of the restaurants downtown have incredible collections displayed in a beautiful and classy way.

They also have a bourbon tour where they give you a "passport" that you get stamped at different high end bars where you have a pour of something good at each. Once you get enough stamps, you get a shirt.

Hokey, maybe slightly, but you should see the bars on the list. Gorgeous places and as I said, their collections are the altar.

Oh well - no bourbon for me.

Was out tonight at a fancy schmancy place for dinner and they brought us the desert menu and on it was Balvenie 14 year old Carribean Rum Cask Finished Scotch Whiskey.

Caught my eye as you can imagine. Had a pour along with an espresso. Was very interesting - like the Angel's Envy rye only a bit less in your face. Gonna think about getting a bottle ($70).

Also had a marg with Solerno Blood Orange liquor and some high end tequila or another with lime and agave juice. Was wonderful.

Even had a beer with lunch.

Some local summer ale that is brewed or aged or fermented or something-or-other like a lager.

Was very tasty with my seared tuna sandwich.

The Balvenie 14 is amazing. They are my favorite non-Islay scotch to begin with, have had all Balvenies that are for purchase. The 14 is prob my second fave of their line after the 21.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Picked up the Balvenie 14 today.

My first Scotch other than a small bottle of Glen Elgin 22 that to be honest, I didn't (don't) care for.

I believe this Balvenie will be a good entry point for me.

Now you can look forward to the day when you graduate to Islay Malt.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

So last night, out of respect for my trip to Kentucky, I decided that I'd do bourbon while I played a few tunes on the guitar.

Did the Woodford Double Oaked. I'm trying... :o

Didn't have the high end of my range, so concentrated on murder ballads (Life in Prison, etc.), folky Dead tunes (Ripple, Rider, etc.) and some of the bluegrass that I know (Dark Hollow, Long Journey Home, etc). Fit well with the bourbon.

I imagine I'll get there at some point. I'm curious to keep trying new things.

Short's Brewing Co. Soft Parade

Fruity beer, yes, but it's good.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

South Shore Bourbon Barrel Coffee Mint Stout - 5/5 Incredible. It tasted like liquid Andes mints. Highly recommend.
Capital Jobu - 4/5 Pretty good rum barrel aged brown ale
Dogfish Head Burton Baton - 4.5/5 Awesome DIPA, aged in oak. Very well-balanced, easy to drink DIPA. Loved it.
Milwaukee Brewing Polish Moon - 3.75/5 Just an ok milk stout, very drinkable, but didn't distinguish itself from the pack.
Dogfish Head Namaste - 3.75/5 An ok witbeer. Witbeers aren't a favorite of mine, but I thought this one was decent.
3 Floyds Yum Yum - 4.25/5 Really like this session pale ale. It was very refreshing, and crisp. Easily drinkable and well done for the style.
Milwaukee Brewing Increase Wheat - 3.5/5 An ok berliner weisse, flavored with goosberries. Pretty good for the style, but not extraordinary.
De Molen 1914 SSS Triple Stout - 4/5 Pretty good stout from the Netherlands. Good depth of flavor, very tasty.
Wells Sticky Toffee Pudding Ale - 2.5/5 Way too sweet and overpowering. The flavor gets really sickening really fast.
Stift Engelszell Gregorius - 4.25/5 Very good trappist beer from Austria. Classified as a strong ale.
Leinenkugels Big Eddy Royal Nektar - 3.75/5 Pretty tasty and refreshing braggot from Leinie's. Pretty sweet, so if you like sweet, you'll like it.

Finally tried Piraat 10.5. As advertised, it's one of the most complicated tasting beers out there. It self-describes as hoppy, but even for someone for whom hops run afoul of fruit cup syndrome, they in no way overwhelm the other tastes. Also lovely color and a pleasant scent. Solid A.

Dogfish is a great brewery. They run ale houses down here in NoVa, and I wish them all the success to keep churning out an endless line of solid product. Not to mention their Belgian Raging B is a serious brew. I'm hopeful the Nats will add this to their excellent rotation of local/craft beers, although a couple RBs and 7 innings of the Mets in the hot sun might well be medically dangerous.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Bought a bottle of rum tonight, and a 4 pack of beer.

12 year aged Ron Medellin Grand Reserva - 50,000 COP ($20)
Didn't taste it or anything, just figured it was worth a try for 20 bucks. Maybe it sucks.

The 4 pack is BBC (Bogota Beer Company) Porter. Its chilling now, and I will try it later.

Over dinner had a good amber ale from 3 Cordilleras. It was called Mulata. Refreshing.

Brother Thelonious from Left Coast. How I haven't had this beer before...I feel shame. Outstanding.
