Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Had some Old Fashioneds at a place in Houghton, because we knew they made really good ones. Bonus: my first round was free, because at another bar on Thu night, met a a couple who both worked at the O.F. place, who were fellow "Chivers," and she was working last night and saw me.

Travelling to the NE corner of the U.P. today, hitting up a brewery or two to get/refill growlers, then tonight it's all the scotch at our hotel, which has an extensive menu.

Then tomorrow, stopping at a few more breweries to get/refill growlers as I make my way home.

If you haven't heard the thing from Uncle Matt by now, tonight will be the perfect opportunity to do so.

Which breweries are in Sault Ste Marie?

Is there a U.P. outside of the Keweenaw?

Maybe geography isn't his strong suit.

There's a little brewery at Tahquamenon Falls that has a decent selection. Of course, I had just completed a 4 mile hike over a pretty rough trail from the lower falls to the big falls and about anything was going to be pretty good tasting at that point. Worth the trip if you're prepared for it.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Brickside Brewery is in Copper Harbor. We've been there before, gotten growlers.

Still isn't the "northeast corner of the U.P." as you two picked up on...

And that's new since I was up there last. We're thinking of doing the Keweenaw again within the next couple years, so will have to hit it.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Long, but there's a lot to cover:

What a weekend for good beers and whiskeys. Even checked off the last bourbon on my bucket list! (I'll get to that below)

KBC Hefe and Witbier: both were very good, but only the wit was canned, so grabbed 2 6ers of that and a growler of the hefe for home.
Brickside porter (located in Copper Harbor, IIRC). This beer will kick your arse. I was warned about it's ABV (9%) and it hits heavier than that.

The Fitz in Eagle River....here we go:

Founder's KBS AND CBS (Canadian Breakfast Stout; same as KBS but add maple syrup to the mix)....ON FRIGGIN' TAP. Needless to say, both are amazing, and I found the CBS to be a touch sweeter, naturally.

When I first walked in, I saw it on the shelf...about half full....George. T. Stagg. 142.8 proof (2012 bottle).:eek::eek:I asked how much for a pour. "$12." "OKAY." "Wait, it might be more...maybe $14--" "Yes. I'll take one. All the yes." (Note: by the end of the night, thanks to our group, we had 1/4 of the bottle. Also, some IDIOT, about 30YO asked what it was, ordered it....AND PROCEEDED TO SHOOT IT. WTeff?!)

Redbreast 15: it had something going on that the 12 didn't. Took me a couple sips, but finally it came to me. It had a "candied" taste to it. Just a different kind of sweetness to it.

After dinner, had the granddaddy of flights they offered, sorta. They were out of one of the scotches, so they subbed an equal one in. It cost $75 for 3 pours, even though it was 3 $30 pours separately. Yeah:

Bunnahabhain 25, Laphroaig 25, and Old Pulteney 30. Hell yes. The original flight was called the "Old McNaughton" and we renamed the flight the "Old McNaughty."

On the way home:
Thirsty Pagan (Superior WI) Tequila barrel-aged cream ale. Interesting, and very good on a hot day like today. Got a howler (32oz "growler") of that.
Castle Danger Cream Ale. They didn't have the beer I wanted, so went with a growler of this.

Final note: the bartender/part owner of the Fitz mentioned to me at the end of the night that "your group really held your sh* (booze) together." Told him the general choices of beers/whiskeys, and he chuckled and said, "Ah, no wonder then." :D

EDIT: forgot to mention, our group drank the Fitz out of the Founder's Blushing Monk (at one point, we had 5 bottles on the table) and the Laphroaig 25. And they couldn't wash the whiskey glasses fast enough, so by the end of the night, we were basically drinking them out of double shotglasses like you get at beer fests.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Checked out Harriet Brewing in Minneapolis off of Lake Street. Pretty cool vibe, with live music. Felt like drinking someone's homebrew in a garage with a guy playing a guitar and singing in the corner. Only had 1 beer, their Belgian IPA, and I liked it. Very refreshing on a miserable hot day.

Then went to the Nordeast Brewers Block Party and met up with SOH and Vera. Had a few more beers there. Insight Brewing had a Saison that was solid, and finally got to try Fulton's The Raddoneaur. Probably didn't get close to spelling that right.

I was so.....I had to go out for a smoke. Asked the bartender/part-owner about it, and even he said he couldn't believe it. The dude failed on a few levels. BTW, checked the photo of my receipt, it was only $10 for a pour.

BTW, we already booked the whole top floor of the place for next year, which consists of 8 of the 12 rooms the place has. We had 7 of the 8 top floor rooms this year.

I find it kind of funny (and really cool) that there is a place like that with a great Whiskey/Scotch selection in Eagle River of all places. When we passed through there, it looked as if there wasn't anything there worth stopping for and here's this hidden gem.

We found it by accident for the most part. Couple years ago, decided that whatever town was on the loop we were taking, we'd stop in at the bar, have 1 drink, talk with the locals, and move on. Saw this place's whiskey (all kinds) menu...took note. Passed along info. Talked with the bartender about how the hell he could get this stuff, and he was amazed that some of it (including the beer) was that rare where we come from.

We were already told that last year when part of our group stopped in (I didn't make that trip), that was their best night of the season. I can honestly say, I will bet dollars to donuts last night was the best night they had for profits. I guess the state of MI saw what they were trying to do (specialize in rare/expensive stuff) and boomdone (they have a different system than MN, so to speak, for buying booze).

As I understand it, the state is the lone "distributor" as opposed to MN who has independent distributors.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Between my sister and I we ended up with 4 extra tickets, 2 of which are spoken for. MNS should make a trip back that weekend.

Viking (GPL) has my ticket. Such a great time. Last year's was my first beer fest ever, so now I know what to expect.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

I plan on drinking a lot of tasty beer

I did last year, but did watch my intake a little, as it is a marathon. Probably held back on the cautious side, honestly. I just hope the Hot Indian Food food truck is there again. Tasty!
