Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Had a summer high school hockey barbeque tonight and then had a few dads over for some rum on the deck.

Did some Matusalem 18, Zafra 21 and Pussers 15.

Was fun to have over some peeps that are rum enthusiasts. Usually I'm drinking this stuff alone.

Got compliments on the night's selections.

So speaking of emergencies.

Apparently the only bourbon I have in my house is Maker's Mark.

****. I thought for sure I had a WRDO here somewhere.

Boy, THAT'S a buzzkill. ;)

Really wanted a Lime-O-Rita tonight, given the weather. The store I stopped at was actually sold out of it. They had the variants, but no thank you. Settled for Angry Orchard Summer Honey Cider. It did quench my thirst for a crisp summery drink, but still....haven't had a Lime-O-Rita yet this summer, and this is the perfect weekend to have one.

Yeah I'm not happy.

A WRDO would have gone great after that Bigfoot Barrel-Aged. Which, for the record, was incredible. It was almost certainly better than Surly 8. And those who know me personally know how much I love Surly 8.

I can understand your disappointment, but it's not like you were left with some crappy bourbon. Just sayin'.

For the layman, MM is fairly good. At a bar it's often the best they have.

I just can put it in the top third of bourbons. Among the massive and relatively inexpensive brands, it's fairly good.

It's a fantastic Old Fashioined bourbon. Perhaps the best ever.

I won't have an Old Fashioned unless it's Maker's. Armadillo and SteveMN (GPL folk) know this for a fact, as we drank a bar out of Maker's on the last Houghton trip. :D

MM is a solid go-to bourbon. A regular in the rotation, shall we say.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

I can't buy MM when WRDS (not WRDO) is in the same price point (<$40)

MM does have an incredible combination of acidity, sweetness, and oak to make an incredible OF.

Although, I have never made a GTS Jr or WRDO old fashioned.

Why would you WANT to?

MM is perfect for an OF. Just good enough for it to matter, not good enough to "waste" with mixers.

Dillo had an MM46 OF....I took a sip...world of difference.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

So, last night, a guy on Gopher Puck Live stated that he found Evil Twin's Double Barrel Jesus in the MSP area, which cause some of us to go nutzoid. This morning, he told us the store he got it at. I called them, they were out. Called another store, and they sold out. HOWEVER, a little bit later, that second store called me back and said they had a bottle on hold, but the customer no longer wanted it. Boom, score. Got my bottle. :)

This store also has a "Buy 6 bottles, get 15% off" (basically a buy 5 get one free, since it's mostly 23oz bombers they have for single bottles). It's a half hour drive for me, so made it worth my while:

Evil Twin Double Barrel Jesus (imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels)
Stillwater/Evil Twin collaboration Even Less Jesus (imperial stout with burgundy grape juice added)
Life Bridge Silhouette (Jan 2014 version)
Southern Tier Choklat Oranj (stout with chocolate and orange peel) (took a chance on this one, it was basically free, due to the 15% off)
Stillwater Kentucky Style Folklore (stout aged in bourbon barrels, 12 oz)
Avery's The Beast Grand Cru Ale (12 oz....and 17.2%)

Short's Brewing Autumn Ale; it's a bitter Amber Ale. Very drinkable.

Angel's Envy Finished Rye is great. Never had the Bourbon.
