Elmira College Soaring Eagles 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: No Reply At All

Re: No Reply At All

Memo to Ms. Thompson - start planning NOW to play next year downtown.....

No thanks! The First Arena is a nice place, but I'd rather be at the Domes. I always tell people; At the Domes you feel like you're at a hockey game, at The First Arena you're merely watching a hockey game...

Must be 3,500-4,000 people in the Elmira area are satisfied with merely watching a hockey game now :(:o

Re: No Reply At All

never happen. plus there is no room there.
I haven’t been back in a while so I cant comment on attendance. But if Neumann can pack the place with students then EC can. But the NU rink is a lot closer than the Domes to campus.
Home game 14 miles away in the country.... Home game 14 minute walk to town....:D

The student section at the Oswego Campus Center is larger than the entire student population of Elmira College.

Newumann student population is more than double the student population of EC.

If the Domes are such a great place to play, then soccer, lacrosse, basketball, etc would play out there.....some of them practice out there, but they don't play games out there....to allow more students to attend....why not for hockey? Isn't this a college activity for the benefit of students?

IMHO This should be a no-brainer....

I sure would like to know where the EC students are when there is a game at the domes.
No student support at all. I wonder if the College even puts up flyers on the bulletin boards or send emails to the students. Or perhaps the bus doesn't have heat.
It would be nice to send the games to the First Arena. But man, I would sure miss the domes. When the Jackals came in to Elmira, most of the EC fans said goodbye to the soaring eagles. People want to see fights and drink beer at a higher level of play. It would be nice if the arena and the domes can work something out. Those purple seats do mean that EC should be there!

Re: No Reply At All

Re: No Reply At All

Many, many years ago when I drove bus for EC, there was talk that 1) There was money available for a rink to be built on campus. 2) A site was picked on campus. 3) Blueprints had been drawn for a rink on campus. Being able to secure the Domes for $1.00 per year lease was a "no brainer".
The seats at First Arena are Purple for a reason, they had bet that EC would move, guess they lost that bet. The purple seats that are now in the Domes are left overs from the First Arena.
Although first Arena is nice, i do not want to go down there for every game, one or two a year I can live with, but what gets my goat is when they rape you for parking just because there is a game going on. Any other night it's free parking. Screw the City of Elmira.

Reap what you sow

Reap what you sow

Connor - You live within walking distance of the Domes, the students don't, and can't be bothered to make the trek. There are 1500 other non-students who disagree that the decision to stay at the MAC was a wise one, they're the ones who sat in the now empty seats.

You may also park on any downtown street and the other free parking lots within two blocks of the Arena, and the crap about getting your car vandalized is bogus. Bottom line, the college sold the program's soul for the concessions revenue, and although the college inflates them, actual attendance figures are irrefutable proof.

True, I live "close" to the Domes, but that's only for the past 5-6 years, (out of more than 20). I hope the mention of car vandalizing was not aimed at me, I never said such stuff. If you look at the majority of fans at the Jackals games, I bet a large majority had never been to a hockey game before. Some EC fans left, true, but I believe those are the ones who had more issues than distance to the rink. Couldn't buy beer anymore, cold (it has improved) objections to the AD's decisions on some topics. Maybe the most important one was that they were the "fair weather fans"

There will always be the argument of "Why" the rink is not on campus but let's face it, it's a $$$$ thing, BIG $$$$s. Maint. on the Dome far outweighs the cost and maint. of a new rink. Regardless of where EC plays, I/we will be there and if "those" fans who put their own personal differences(with the Administration)over the support of the team, well, who needs them. The most important thing the team needs is a "Dedicated" fan base and they have that, although a bit smaller than the "Good old days"

That is not true that many EC fans left to follow the Jackals. I go to Jackals games when EC is not playing, and a VAST majority of the Jackal crowd never went to EC games to begin with.

Cortland v EC

Cortland v EC

- Quietest arena in which I've ever seen a game except for maybe Buff State's
- Cortland isn't that bad, in fact, they looked better than the Buff State team I saw on Wednesday in Geneva
- Willer is hands down the best player on the squad
- EC is still two defense men from a very good team
- The line of the 3 Quebec kids is very entertaining to watch, and should they stay together, will become very good.
- For a not very large lad, Clewlow laid out two of the best checks of the season

yeah, well guess what... when there is a jackal game and a EC game on the same night... guess where the majority of the fans go?.....to the first arena .

Yeah, Well guess what? Even when the Jackals aren't playing, the difference in fans at an EC game is minimal. I don't know how long you've been around, but not all the fans that left EC went to the Jackals, just a drop in the bucket that's about it and as I stated before who needs those kind of fans anyway? If the jackals moved away, the increase in EC attendance would not go up that much, if any.

I disagree completely. If the Jackals moved away and Elmira played at the First Arena i bet we'd easily get 1500-2000 people rather than the 500 at the Domes.

It just takes time. Look at Utica. They were minor league hockey market starved for a hockey team after the Prowlers/Devils etc left and after about two-three years the community completely bought into the college team.

The problem isn't just the college game vs the pro game. It's the rink. The majority of people want to go to the place that's warmer and serves beer and is in downtown Elmira rather than the place that is cold, dark, bleacher seating, and in the sticks.

Don't get me wrong. I love the Domes and I'd rather watch any type of hockey game from the seat I sat at for 15 years, but when it comes to see what has become of the fan base is downright disgraceful.

The sightlines at the domes are tremendous up high in the bleachers. You can see everything and still feel like you're right on top of the ice. If I could build a new rink with seating replicated like the Domes I'd do it in a heartbeat.

But, I'd also like to see what's best for the program and if the Jackals left the town, IMHO it'd be a no brainer to move to the downtown rink. Even if they don't leave town, it might still be time to move to try and get some sort of a crowd at games.

Look at this way. How many people of the few that are left would actually stop following EC hockey if they moved to the First Arena? Maybe 2-5%? There are only diehards left and I honestly can't see them stop following the team because they moved to a different rink. On the flip side, how many people might actually START coming to games again or give it a shot if they haven't seen it before? There's no way you'll convince me more people will stop following the team than start following it. Student turnout alone should be able top whatever might actually stop following the team.

Re: Elmira College Soaring Eagles 2010-2011 Season Thread

Derek, I'm talking AT the Domes, not at First Arena. In order to keep the old Jackals Fans, you will have to sell beer, if that's what is most important to some people, so be it. Yes, I too will follow the team regardless. ****, I walked form T&C fire dept all the way to the Domes way back in '87, yes, in a snow storm.

Re: No Reply At All

This horse is dead. The EC hockey teams will not play there. Its also not the answer for getting fans.

not to mention you cant sell beer at NCAA events. Maybe I read it wrong, but sounded like if they sold beer at EC games theyd get more fans.

Here is what I know.
The Domes offer huge cost savings.
No room at new rink for both EC mens and womens programs.

For me I trust the people at EC that make these decisions.

Are Jackals in trouble? Fold or relo?

You CAN sell beer at NCAA events - Utica does it all the time. What you CAN'T do is sell beer at Conference- or NCAA-sponsored postseason games. That's 2 or 3 games per year that would have to be alcohol-free.
