Re: Elmira College 2013-14

I think this group of guys is finding it's way. Looking forward to the next 2 years. We need to stop playing down to the lesser teams, though.

UC v EC

UC v EC

Sometimes I believe that the schools should have to pay the fans to watch the games; tonight was one of those nights.
  • EC continues to dress only two goalies, and despite giving up 6, I don't believe a sub was ever considered
  • The theme of the night: Huge rebounds, and precious little defensive coverage
  • UC won (it seemed) 80% of the face offs
  • UC swapped goalies 3 minutes into the 2nd period. EC couldn't buy a shot the rest of the 2nd. I think there were maybe 5
  • EC continues to take too many (dumb) penalties
  • EC twice gives up goals within the last minute of a period!?
  • Defensively, EC seemed tentative all night. UC was even worse.
  • In regulation, the ref emphatically signals the winning goal, pauses a moment, then with no help from anyone, emphatically waves it off. Bizarre!
  • Local kid playing for UC had a chance to win the game short-handed and was stoned. (Went to HS with my kids and I was secretly kind of hopin' hed' knock it in)
  • Gotta hand it to the dozen UC faithful and one groupie who made the trek. I wouldn't travel to watch that on-ice abortion.
  • UC has no business making the Lewiston trip

What... no goal-by-goal summary tonight? FOR SHAME!!! (errr, YOU... FEEL... SHAAAAAME!!!™) :)
Alright, lemme help you out with that tonight if I may... the "Readers Digest Version"... With the exception of a select few goals tonight, we have: Shot, rebound, scrum, some ugly-bits in the slot, some more ugly-bits in the crease, GOAL.

Yup... that about covers it, for probably 10 out of the 13 scored tonight. And another "notable of the evening" is Taulien getting a hat-trick. Atta boy!

Until tomorrow...

UC v EC Part Deux

UC v EC Part Deux

Alumni evening, around 1200 in the stands
  • EC now down to a single healthy goalie
  • Magliocco's head got bounced off the crossbar, countenance was ashen white, and his legs couldn't support his weight
  • UC missed half a dozen "How did he miss that?" opportunities
  • After the goalie incident, took a good ten minutes before any real hockey again began to be played
  • For the fourth or fifth time this season, EC loses a D inside the first 10 minutes, and plays with 5
  • DiMelo played as well as he ever has, but fate gets much of the credit
  • Three loooonnngg 2-man advantages on which neither team scored
  • The D completed half as many passes to opponents as to team mates
  • UC's speed advantage was really evident tonight; EC seemed to be reaching all night
  • Shots and face-offs were heavily weighted in UC's favor
  • Heenan will have stroke before he's 40

Re: Elmira College 2013-14

I'm surprised there's no discussion about Utica running Magliocco or DeMelo getting hauled down on the 3rd goal. Not entirely clear from watching video but both seemed to merit whistles. I'd love to see the video. Anyone who was there have any thoughts?

Also, I only know what I read on this board about the Utica coach, but it's not hard to conclude coming out physically and maybe even running the goalie may have been part of the game plan?

He ran the goalie last year in the first game too, seems to becoming a "habit" of them.

I'd love to see the video. Any idea if there's a way to watch archived video on upstream?

DaFosse served his minor, was skating toward the bench, but Heenan directed him to join the play. He skated full speed toward the front of the net, between the Elmira defenseman (who had no clue he was there) and goalie. The Elmira D skated backward, clipped DaFosse, knocked him off balance and into Sal. I can't read minds, but there seemed to be no planned or malicious intent. DaFosse was certainly intent on atoning for his penalty and was a bit out of control. If we had to endure Heenan's constant beratings, we'd all be skating a bit recklessly.

Re: Elmira College 2013-14

Thanks for the clarification. How about the gwg? DeMelo was complaining he was interfered with. I couldn't tell from the video stream. How'd that look live? Good goal or missed interference call?

Re: Elmira College 2013-14

One of the worst called games all the way around I have seen in years. I was sitting with Mr. Simpson an Mr. Nolan at the game Saturday an all three of us could not believe the amount of bad calls an no calls going both ways. the last goal is very hard to call for some reason demelo couldn't get back to his feet he attacked the ref after they signaled goal saying he was being held an he had lost his glove an everything. the last penalty on Eric David was really bad it was a continuation play an he finished his check an not 30 sec later at the other end same thing happened to Collins when a utica dman use continuation to rub him out of the play an it wasn't called...just so many bad called an no calls thru out this game was horrible.... an at the end after they won utica had a few players go after some of ecs guys an coach had to come over an tell utica to get off the ice no hand shakes nothin cause of the way they behaved after.... in my mind utica is one of the dirtyest teams in the league an maybe that stems from there coach but didn't like the wat they acted after the game.

EC v Hobart

EC v Hobart

Interesting contest. Huge momentum swings throughout.
  • Place was as packed as I've ever witnessed in the dozen or so times I've made the trip. Good Elmira contingent.
  • Both teams gave the puck away in their own zone consistently.
  • When EC gets a bad line match, they struggle to clear their own zone, and chase for 45 seconds
  • Hobart had half a dozen short-handed chances, but only capitalized on one. A couple of times, they beat EC to the puck when they'd clear it on a kill.
  • The 7/9/10 line gave a couple of Statesmen lines fits.
  • Panek officiated the game. He must be on the D1 black-list.
  • Magliocco wasn't dressed. DiMelo did fine, Gretsky was the backup!?
  • The Hobart fans around me said "this is Taylor's most undisciplined squad ever"
  • Still waaaaayyy too many penalties.
  • EC seems to have an uncanny ability to hit opposing players on shots from the point, and attempts to clear on the kill.
  • The cooler glass is so low that any deflection of the goaltender stick landed in the netting. Game took much too long.
  • Heard Brass Bonanza once too many times as well ... prez.
