Elmira College - 2012/2013

EC vs Wesleyan U

EC vs Wesleyan U

- DeMelo in net tonight, Burnell was back in the lineup after last night's ordeal, Collins wasn't dressed, so the lineups were a bit shuffled
- At 10 minutes in the 1st, shots were 10-2 in favor of WU
- Hoey left the game not being able to place any weight whatsoever on his left ankle/foot
- For those of you over age 30, EC is playing at 33 1/3, and everyone else is playing at 45 RPM

Goals:
W1 - Campbell got his pocket picked in the right circle
E1 - Strale did the dirty work muscling the puck on net, Depp picked up the easy putback
W2 - PP Wesleyan knocked the face off into the crease where a Wesleyan player tapped it in uncontested
W3 - Three 1-touch pretty passes
E2 - EC banged home a rebound
W4 - DiMelo pinned a shot against the pipe, the whistle blew, the light went on, the goal counted!?
W5 - Impossible angle shot from a foot off the endline somehow slid through

At least the weather was nice ... oh wait, and Oswego is in town on Friday!

PS Amherst is the real deal. May be better than their FF team from Placid.

Re: EC vs Wesleyan U

Elmira needs out of the Domes. 500-1,000 fans in a 3,200 seat arena is getting old, and the place won't sell out despite what the "older" folk think even if they were undefeated. EC played hard tonight, but Oswego finished the chances they were given. At least we have two easy games against Morrisville next weekend.

It's too bad the College is happy with a competitive team. Until that changes we won't win a championship.

Oswaygo @ EC

Oswaygo @ EC

Before the game begins, the Olympia driver runs out of water, leaves a crap-load of ice debris at the red line while refilling, and for the first 5 minutes of the game 3 or 4 passes take odd bounces or unexplained turns on the debris field. A defender bringing the puck up ice has it stop on one of the ice cubes and he skates on without the puck. Can't make this stuff up kids.

- EC (with one exception) finally gets the memo to stop taking cheap penalties.
- Oswego has none for the game! nor did they deserve one
- McDonald got the start in net. Has Elmira's best GAA at 3.92 before the game, 3.95 after
- Hoey on crutches
- In the first 90 seconds, Strale gets stoned on a breakaway, and stuffed on a backhand putback. Harbinger of things to come
- Elmira finished their checks quite well in the 1st period. Seemed to break OSU's rhythm.
- EC had 5 or 6 grade A chances in the first, but couldn't finish them.
- To start the 2nd, OSU turned up their forecheck, and their superior skating ability frustrated EC into bad outlet passes
- OSU hit at least 4 pipes in the game

Game 1: 0-9 Game 2: 2-5 The boys are moving in the right direction.

I agree. Going to the games feels like Sunday Mass. Home crowd very quiet.. There is no excitement there anymore.. EC played hard tonight .

You call me old ? :)

what does this mean? I’m confused.

No one plays or coaches to lose. It’s not easy to winning championships. Saul was gone most of xmas break recruiting and trying to find these missing pieces. I can certainly understand everyone’s frustration. Losing sucks and we all have high expectations, and those expectations were set based on the programs history.
You've been around a long time so I’m not questions you. You know what you’re talking about. But curious what needs to change to win.
Keep up the good work

Mo'ville @ EC

Mo'ville @ EC

So, what do you get when you play back to back games between a 1-13 team, and a freshmen laden team? Ans: Not very pretty hockey

  • Everett and Feola calling the game; arguably two refs at opposite ends of the competence spectrum
  • Last linesman game for Trumpy who retires after tonight
  • Mo'ville coaches contest every ... freakin' .... call. Game took nearly two and half hours.
  • First two EC goals were blown offsides calls (way to end the career Trumpy!)
  • EC resorted to taking really bad penalties - Three goaltender interference instances.
  • Two kneeing calls; the second took a Mustang out of the game, and earned a 5 minute major
  • Terrible goal tending (again) at both ends. Mo'ville used all 3, could have used a 4th
  • Mo'ville has very poor defensemen. If you're a JrB D who can skate backwards, give them a call
  • EC began to use the "clutter the crease" strategem with decent success
  • After Mo'vill was down by 3, they began to cherry pick two guys. Have never seen that !?
  • EC cannot defend the puck from behind its own end line
  • Best Quotes of the Night: Everett to Mo'ville coache "Kevin, I saw the whole thing, he launched himself into the boards. It was a dive!" Coach: "Then call it"
  • Mo'ville Coach to drunk EC fan: "You better get home, your trailer is burning ... Methhead"
Yeah, it was that kind of game. Gonna have to go pour some bleach in my eyes.

Shocked at just how bad DeMelo looked, he didn't "wake up" until the third period. Nice to see Ten Van Holt and Collins on the same line again, too bad Coach can't keep the same lines together for even a full game.

Good old Krogol. In a past life, he may have been our Captain.

So, who's excited for round 3? Will most likely be down friday.

UC v EC

UC v EC

EC theme for the night ... Flashes of brilliance followed by spells of malaise
  • Nice making vcxc's acquaintance tonight.
  • Great to see UC's #12 on the ice. Got to see him play as HS sophomore. Quality kid.
  • Educate is the real deal
  • Simpson had a couple of early defensive gaffes early on which UC couldn't capitalize
  • Pios seemed to be a bit better with their sticks. Always lifting or tying up an opponent's
  • Elmira's first 10 minutes were their best of the season, the next 28 ... not so much.
  • If UC is a top 3 team, then I'm the King of Salem ... no offense intended
  • Elmira reverted back to taking penalties, and their PK cost them the game
  • If coach could predict which goalie would have the hot hand before the game, record would be very different.
  • Burtt left in the 1st on 1 leg, returned for the 3rd, got charged / boarded / raped, only a minor given!?
  • Last 2 minutes of the game were complete chaos. Empty net, on PP, place was going absolutely nuts

E1 - Odd man rush, rebound batted in by the 4th guy on the rush
U1 - Very end of PP, UC bats in a rebound
U2 - Very end of PP, UC bats in a rebound
U3 - UC pots another rebound
U4 - PP through a crowd
U5 - PP (do you recognize a theme?)
E2 - Looked like a tip-in from a long blast
E3 - Depp hustle play created an easy rebound tap-in for Sumi
E4 - PP blast tipped in

Interesting call of the game. EC on the kill, clears the puck out of their own end which hits a UC bench player. Refs bring the face-off back into the EC defensive zone. Led indirectly to a UC goal. {bizarre}

Re: UC v EC

Re: UC v EC

Utica is not a top three team. You are correct when you say EC's penalty kill cost them the game, because it was pretty awful. DeMelo should of started, but like you said who knew?

Re: Elmira College - 2012/2013

Pardon me if I'm missing something here, but who is saying Utica is a Top 3 team?

Re: EC and Tourneys

Re: EC and Tourneys

I was wondering the same thing.

Edit: Well, I guess a bit back, we did think that we should be considered a top 3 team if Oswego was the 4th team. ;)

I'll break my review into multiple parts. Let me start off by saying that Elmira looked like two completely different teams if you saw that game in half. First 30 minutes was all UC. In the last 30, EC played like they deserved to win. They tightened up Defensively, Stayed out of the box(While utica suddenly looked like Bernie Madoff. Looking good one day and locked up the next) Demelo looked excellent, And wow, does Sumi have a ROCKET shot or what? (wow)
Here's my assessment on the hit:
From my angle, that was a minor on Morton. Nasty hit and you could definitely argue with the increased emphasis on avoiding head injuries for a major or a game misc., but it was really a matter of two guys going full blast the length of the ice and unfortunately Burtt got a really bad end of the collision. Morton had a look on his face when he skated over like (Crap, did that just happen?... he looked like that was not what he had in mind when he went for that one)
Subsequently, The refs had to call something there, but i mean, a 10 minute misc or a major would have been at the very top end of the range in terms of calling it. Its a reasonable possibility, but it just looked like two guys going after a loose puck from down there. A 10 could have been justifiable, but i just dont know that it totally would have fit what happened. these things do happen.

The one thing that annoyed me: The girl working the scorers table was practically screaming (and i mean loudly) bloody murder next to me. She thought it was an undisputed game misconduct. That combined with her word choice(Which was pretty bad for a press box at any level when others immediately around you are on the air) caused me to give her a real strange look, then go back about my business like nothing happened. I realistically should send their supervisor a note, but i think i'll let that go.

The good news: That kid was about the only bad apple (besides the morons who apparently were fighting on the other side) i saw all night. Pleasure to meet any and all of you who came down to say hello. I met more than one of you tonight and i'm glad i did. My first time at the domes was a successful one, even with the Internet cutting out every five minutes(And the RLM video feed was crashing right along with us).... Not much you can do as visiting press other than cheerfully go about troubleshooting and ask questions later.

Besides that, The staff was reasonably helpful, the Concessions are nicely placed although i didnt partake in any munchies, The referees did a fairly good job defusing things when they were about to get real hairy, and i think a big reason why is that you had Will O'malley (Who worked the saturday game in the first weekend series) who was very well aware of what happened the first time these two teams played each other. I was hoping to get out of there with a far cleaner game and thankfully, that took place.

I put this on the UC thread, but the Domes are one reliable phone jack away from being a legitimately great barn IMO. I'd go back.

Glad you agree;) Sorry I didn't remember to get down to meet you. "I missed the (Morons) fighting on the other side" what was that all about?

I'm going to go out on a limb with that one. There was a cop hanging out over there and there were people hanging out on those bleachers a bit longer than everyone else. Which makes me think they had just watched something of that nature.... they were there awfully long. Was kind of busy, so i missed it if it did happen.

Btw, told a couple of my UC pals about what krogol said to one of the fans last week(Someone posted that quote on here)..... They shrugged and went "That's just Krogol."
