Elmira College - 2012/2013

Re: Elmira College - 2012/2013

Good game by EC tonight vs Hobart, a bit closer than the score indicates. Still a couple dumb penalties but not as many. EC could pull off a victory tomorrow night if they "play smart"

would be a nice win if they do, they need something to hang their hat on for next yr

This definitely a hard team to figure out. It was mentioned by a "Parent" that the "Team" (Coach) is on a three year plan, which,in my opinion, means he's not too worried about the present, but looking at the "Big Year" to be '14-'15 season.
At this time, we can only hope that they "Play the Spoiler" cause a little "shuffle" in the standings.

Hobart vs. EC

Hobart vs. EC

The Good: The D-line of Morikawa, Robertson, Carlette line played their blades off. Seems as though the effort is always a bit better when you're actually playing for something. Also getting consistent traffic in front, and screening the opponent's tender; two of the three goals were a direct result of this stratagem.

The Bad: The 1st half of the 2nd period was about the worst all around defensive hockey I've seen since the inaugural EC season. Couldn't blame this one on the goaltending, the defense was doing everything in their power to give the puck away.

The Ugly: NineVanHolt took a major boarding and a gamer, and from then until mid 3rd, no energy, no desire, no coordination, no leadership. In the past, there had always been a Rich Rerrie, Pete Feola, Mark Beisenthal, Andre Krivokrasov, Greg Tuttle, et al to make a great individual play, make the incredible stop, lay some leather on the opponent's best player or simply inspire the rest of the team with their work rate. This year ... not so much.

PS ... the Hobart on the ice tonight wasn't a top 5 team, granted, most teams play down to their competition.

I'd also note the Hobart team on the ice tonight was not their full squad.

Also note that the goalie for Hobart was freshman goalie making first start who I thought played really well.

With that said the 2nd period for Elmira...I have never seen an Elmira team play as poor as that in the times that I have seen them play. Score could (and should) have been a lot worse.

I would have to agree on that statement but also add that this year's EC team is one of the worst of all I have seen, if not the worst. I still have to say that I, and several others I talk to, agree that a lot of this year falls on Coaching. No consistency on lines, goalies, discipline. So many times we've seen the "Good, the Bad and lots of Ugly" this year.
The "Educated" EC Fans knew coming into this season that it would not be what we were used to, but, with the talent that we do have, this team should have a much better record than they do.

Not to mention no emotion. I never see the coach show any emotion behind the bench.

Alumni Weekend is next Saturday. I think we should be able to win one last game at the Domes this year!

X2, Coach only got really mad once, Our record on Alumni Night hasn't been too good lately either. barely ever challenges the refs. Maybe he needs to take lessons from the Morrisville coach ;-)

On another note, a rare instance last night, Don wasn't there:eek:

Wow! Pretty sure you can count on one hand the amount of men's hockey home games Don has missed in the last couple decades.

The night his Mother passed away he left the game to go to the hospital and knowing she would have insisted, he returned to the game. We were with him Friday night in Geneva and he made no mention about not being there Sat. night. True, a very rare occurrence.

Re: EC and Tourneys

I think what concerns me the most after watching the Hobart game are two things. First the lack of anyone who can create their own scoring chance. Second is the lack of any real speed. That leaves the offense to point shots and rebounds. Not a way to put any sort of real scare into an opponent.

Re: Elmira College - 2012/2013

I couldn't make it because I was home battling the stomach bug. I know the refs missed me.

Leadership from within

Leadership from within

I never see the coach show any emotion behind the bench.
A good leader tempers and adjusts his/her style for the intended audience. Some players respond to emotion, others to rational persuasion. Frankly, if a human is not wired to lead emotionally, it's something that really can't be turned of and on. These 'kids' are 21/22 year olds that - by now - should be internally motivated and be lead by the team captains/leaders, and not be solely relying on a screaming coach.

In Saul's defense, not since the inaugural EC season has there been a confluence of events resulting in that large a turnover of players. With EC's tuition, increased outside aid scrutiny, and lack of hockey-player-attractive majors at Elmira, getting 15 blue-chippers in a single season was simply never going to happen (Niagara's exceptional recruiting class was based on the fact they were going D1 in two years). The optimal mix of size, speed, raw talent, emotion, and experience just wasn't there this season.

Was this season a resounding success? not if measured in W/L and consistent effort, but there is a nucleus of Frosh talent on the team which - if augmented over the next two recruiting classes - should gel by the end of next season. Hopefully a couple of "motivated" transfers (ie not D1 washouts) and a standout netminder will also see an opportunity to step right in as well. The closest parallel situation I recall was the recruiting class of ?1991? that beat Plattsburgh for 3rd place in a pre-determined FF Minnesota? site in 1993 as sophomores. (Sorry Remy)

Strong cause for optimism.
