Elmira College - 2012/2013

Re: Elmira College - 2012/2013

Was not a bad game on Ec's part other then gave up a lot of odd man rushes which cost them cause manhattenville capitalized on. An we couldn't buy a goal a few chances on the door step but couldn't put them in. Took a lot of penatlys in the second a lot of them where unnessasary an that comes from being a young team. The thing that i really sink the ship for us tonight was the goal at the very end of the 2nd. Weather or not it was a goal was so bang hard to tell it was unreal it was that close I couldn't tell at all. But really think that was the end for them tonight came out in the third really flat an then gave up forth goal. Played a good overall game just got to cut down on the turnovers an d has to get back cant count on forwards to get back for them when they pinch got to work harder on that.

I find the final SOGs hard to believe, EC had plenty of chances, too many penalties, the goal at the end of the second was as close as could be, green light was on, all zeros on the clock but the ref called it a goal, glad it wasn't my call.
Where is McDonald? Not dressed, new goalie dressed? McDonald must have taken a harder hit at Utica than we thought?
M'ville are fast, were right where the puck was going to be, they read the plays near perfectly. Going to be a hard game tonight but I think EC can pull it off.

Ma'ville v EC

Ma'ville v EC

  • Very poor crowd ... maybe 700 and absolutely no students
  • The economic downturn is worse than we had thought. EC has a couple of players that can barely skate!?
  • DiMelo is clearly the only netminder who can stop routine shots
  • Special teams are not working at either end
  • Some great individual efforts tonight, but 5x5, the team appeared to have no purpose
  • Second period was quite well played. No penalties ... the start of a rhythm (cue Miami Sound Machine)
  • When the team is playing well you don't notice little things like:
    1. Lights being out and the North end of the rink in darkness
    2. The bench door being broken
    3. The incredibly poor selection of music played during stoppages
    4. The fact that the music is so loud that you can't carry on a normal conversation
    5. It's unbearably cold
    6. These referees didn't have a clue. An EC skater was checked into the Valiants goalie, and got called for interference
    7. The visiting fans are louder than EC's
  • EC plays quite well when not taking penalties, very poorly when they do.
  • Playland isn't going to be back in service this season

It's going to be a long long season

For the most part, you give good reviews but if you feel the Domes are "It's unbearably cold" then you maybe you need to stay away, I hate the cold as much as anyone but to make a statement like this is just plain pathetic, come on, really, unbearable? Wussss!

The way I read it, those were observations one doesn't tend to make - despite being reality all the time - when the team is doing well. When the team is not doing well (like this season...), attention is more apt to drift and those are the things you notice. I don't see him saying that it being unbearably cold (which is true) is going to keep him away. He's probably saying "unbearable" to exaggerate a bit, but I'm sure he'll still be there watching games, supporting the team, and writing excellent game reviews. Give him a rest, why don't ya? ;)

Re: NU v EC

At my last USA Hockey clinic I met a guy who played 1 year at EC. Was nice talking to someone that played there even if only a year. He was there late 80s and funny hearing the stories

Re: NU v EC

Re: NU v EC

Let's hope EC can rebound with two good solid wins this weekend. I was impressed with the way they fought back in game 2 last week, too bad they couldn't hold the lead.
Good luck to all the other ECAC-W teams (except Utica ) this weekend ;-)

FSU v EC

FSU v EC

- Crowd of only ~325 at the anthem, not a student in the place
- FSU dominated the first 10 minutes, and scored, which seemed to wake up the Eagles
- McDonald played solidly, and flashed some leather reminiscent of 10-11
- MUUUUch better team defense tonight. A forward was always back to help out, and spacing was much improved
- Stayed out of the box when it counted ... for once
- EC struggled to crack FSU's 1-3-1, but when they did, the game really opened up
- Passing is improving, but still isn't crisp
- EC is not a team that will score the text-book goals. They need to bang rebounds, muck it up in front, screen shots and score ugly.
- Two PP goals! Now clicking at a robust 12%

We'll see how this recent improvement persists through the Cardinal Classic

Re: FSU v EC

We don't want a team that only scores the "pretty" goals, we want a team that scores the ugly goals. Ugly goals win playoff games, but there won't be too many of them in Elmira this year. Was nice to see them stay out of the box for a change.

Nice re-cap, it was also nice to see a half dozen EC players go over to Owczarczak after the hand shake. Former teammates catching up on old times, sad thing though, the Freddy play by play guys didn't even know the connection the previous night when the same thing happened

Hey ballgame! How you doing? Still coaching?

hey hope all is well with you. It’s been a while. Whats the young man up to?
Yeah I’m doing a little of everything. Coaching my sons U8 team. Coach-in-Chief for a local youth org, and work for USA Hockey as a coaching education instructor. Good times!

EC and Tourneys

EC and Tourneys

Elmira and tournaments of any ilk have recently not been a good match.

11/12 - Tied Fitchburg at Norwich (unconscious goalie), lost to Neumann in the ECACs, got thumped by Oswego in the NCAAs
10/11 - Tied So Maine, Lost to Skidmore at Saratoga, Adrian knocked them out of the NCAAs
09/10 - Lost to Oswego at the Path, Lost to Ma'ville in the ECACs, Lost (barely) to Norwich in the NCAAs
08/09 - Lost to G/A at the Argus, Lost to Neumann in both the ECACs and NCAAs
07/08 - Lost to Ma'ville in the ECACs, P'burgh in the NCAAs
06/07 - Lost to Oswego at the Path, and Ma'ville in the ECACs
05/06 - Lost to Trinity at the Cardinal, BEAT Utica in the ECACs, lost to Middlebury in the NCAAs

Hopefully this large class of freshman has no futility hex hanging over their heads, and here's to a better outcome this weekend. If the storm breaks by late Thursday, I'm hoping to make the trip.

EC v Amherst

EC v Amherst

From the friendly confines of the Ronald B Stafford Ice Rink in sunny Plattsburgh NY ... To summarize the game:
  • Amherst simply outhustled EC all night, and beat EC to nearly every 50:50 puck.
  • The Jeffs are also quicker than EC, and their passing was superb
  • Amherst's 2nd and 3rd goals were the product of great passing
  • The other three goals were a lost rebound, a lost shot from the blueline, and a defensive give-away
  • EC must muck it up in front to score. Didn't do that at all tonight
  • Burnell hit the boards hard after a great shorthanded hustle play, but left the rink in an ambulance
  • Not much positive from the purple and gold tonight. Fellas seemed to be playing in slow motion
  • One bright spot was the lack of lazy / stupid penalties
  • TenVanHolt wasn't in the lineup again tonight??
  • edit: George Costanza's dad refereed the game. Not very mobile, and got hit with a clear, and blew 3 or 4 pucks dead that were still alive. Cost EC one goal.

Wesleyan is a perennial bottom half NESCAC team, tomorrow should be a better match-up. Plus EC gets 3 extra hours of recovery.

Thanks for the right up. We've been saying EC's speed is missing from the last few years with the exception of a couple of players, it seems no one can get to those loose pucks we nearly always used to get. Burnell out is going to hurt big time, I think it was him who had the dislocated shoulder during the first Utica game?
Let's hope they can bounce back today and hopefully at least give Oswego a little harder time next weekend than their first game ;-)

I really think EC has to strike first against WC or they will be in trouble. WC is one of those teams you cannot let hang around.
