Elmira College - 2012/2013

Re: Roster

Re: Roster

Prez: Oswego=much faster, Elmira has/had no speed. Big guys? Elmira wasn't hitting anyone, some spats of good forechecking but nothing constant. Forget about January, they need to do something NOW, Neumann will not be an easy weekend, these upcoming games are much more important right now, can't afford to go 0-2 tis weekend, IT CAN HAPPEN.
Last year was the first, perhaps only year I've seen names on the road jerseys, no idea why they aren't on them this year?

OH MY!!! Just checked score of Game.
2005- 2009 might have not gave up 9 goals whole month. They wil get better. GO EC!!

They will get better because they can't get any worse. I have never seen and Elmira team so disorganized right from the drop of the puck as they were last Saturday. In the last few years Oswego has been able to wear them down and blow the game open in the second and third but this time if not for some early trouble finishing their chances it could have been 5-0 in the first 10 minutes. Oswego's intensity did not help at all but Elmira just made it too easy on them far too often. Elmira is a young team and the upperclassmen they do have don't seem to have any leadership potential. I think it needs to start from the net out McDonald needs to keep them in some games early in the season so the young guys can get some confidence going. If he can't do the job Milne or DeMelo have to. With all that said I would absolutely not be one bit shocked to see them in the NCAA's at seasons end but with their situation being what it is they need to right the ship quick.

Re: Elmira College - 2012/2013

Hockey players don’t dwell on bad games. Big ECACW game coming up so Im sure they are preparing for that. Its ok to make mistakes, just don’t make the same one twice. If that’s the case we’ll be fine.
With that many freshman Im sure there was a lot of anxiety about the 1st game. Should settle down and regroup
Go EC

NU v EC

NU v EC

Well color me surprised!
  • Great crowd ... probably in the 1750 range
  • DiMelo gets the start and plays the entire game
  • No Hoey on the bench!?
  • Neumann has 12 seniors - EC 13 freshman
  • Great to have Burnell back in the P&G
  • Typical sloppy early season game; bad passing, out of synch, passes to non-existent team mates
  • EC had constant trouble clearing their own zone. Their best strategy was a long NU rebound above the dots.
  • Lines: Herold/Strale/Ciampichini - Oakes/Burnell/Morikawa - Depp/Sumi/Shinkaruk - Whittle/tenVanholt/Collins
  • the frosh W/tV/C line was the most intriguing, and got tons of ice time. Will be interesting if Saul keeps them together.
  • Except for the 1st NU goal, defense pairings weren't bad, not great, but not terrible either. Did what they needed to do.
  • Three frosh defensemen: Burtt, Simpson & (huge) Ericksson.
    [*]Goals:
  • EC1 - Burtt through heavy traffic, Curley never saw it
  • EC2 - PP Erickson banked a shot off Whittle's skate (but you have to be in position for that to occur)
  • NU1 - Gervais (Ricky's love child) gets lost in the slot
  • NU2 - Cowie on a breakaway off a looooong EC rebound (blue line) during a d-change
  • EC3 - Collins on a blast off a scramble from the high slot through 27 bodies. No clue how it got through
This EC team is bigger, slower and isn't going to win with speed, skill and precise tic-tac-toe passing. It will be a muck-n-ruck season.

Re: NU v EC

Re: NU v EC

Good recap, but this was a HUGE improvement over last week. With a little more time, they'll be in the thick of things. Tomorrow will be the test on how well conditioned they are, something that could be a problem. Nice to see the effort made, something that wasn't there last week.

Re: NU v EC

Re: NU v EC

Sat. game: Bad choice in goaltender to start, would have been a totally different game had DeMelo started IMHO. Kinda sloppy play for the most part, partly i suspect due to the two quick goals Neumann got, then the misconduct/DQ on Strale didn't help, lots of frustration. On the positive side, the three goals near the end of the game showed that this team does have character and never gave up.
It was nice to have Jarryd ten Vaanholt's father sit with us during both games. Great guy, looking forward to sitting with him next time he's out here.

Brockport v EC

Brockport v EC

Decent crowd again ... probably in the 1300 range. If someone would have bet me EC would be 3-2 at this point in the season, I would have bet against. (hence the reason I don't gamble)

Typical vitriolic EC / Brockport game.
  • A few new faces (again) on the ice for Elmira again tonight. Coach is giving everyone a look.
  • DiMelo started, but EC has no clear number 1 goalie.
  • Elmira's team defense still has not materialized
  • Brockport began each period with tons of energy and a relentless forecheck, but the intensity wanes around the 14 minute mark
  • EC's offense is still non-existent. Goals - with the exception of #5 - are created by superb individual efforts and creating havoc in front of the net
  • Burtt was impressive tonight especially on the kill, until he overextended, fell down which resulted in a 5x3 goal.
  • Once the lineup is more stable, the coordination will {hopefully} improve
  • Some very impressive freshmen: Collins, Ten Vaanholt, Whittle, Sumi, Shinkaruk
  • EC checked a BP player into the end of the bench, Robertson was hacked down shortly thereafter and never returned to the ice
Goals:
  1. BP1 - PP - Player on far post unmarked
  2. EC1 - Collins short-handed. He's big, rangy and deceitfully quick
  3. EC2 - Burtt with 9 seconds left through a maze of legs
  4. BP2 - EC backpass intercepted resulted in a breakaway
  5. EC3 - Burtt blasts a shot from the high circle, follows in and slams his own rebound home
  6. EC4 - Strale with a nice individual effort skates down the slot and beats the goalie high glove
  7. EC5 - Collins nice pass to Burnell on the far post
  8. EC loses its concentration and begins taking really dumb penalties
  9. BP3 - EC kills off a penalty, but the player comes to the bench rather than the into the play, EC overloaded one side leaving BP alone on the post
  10. BP4 - PP - Defender overcommits and falls down leaving 3 to cover 5

Giving Up Double Digits

Giving Up Double Digits

Best I can tell, the only times an Elmira team surrendered more than 10 goals:
94/95 - 11 - Fredonia
88/89 - 12 - Colgate
81/82 - 12 - Plattsburgh

Re: Elmira College - 2012/2013

Great bounce back win for the guys in Utica tonight. They showed a lot of character and heart coming back after adversity. It's not like Utica played poorly, either. Proud of the guys tonight. This young team will get better and better.

Impressive win tonight for Elmira! That is a long way back from last night against a strong Utica team, makes the future look bright for their young team as you mentioned.

Re: Heading in the right direction

Re: Heading in the right direction

Thanks to UCBadger for sharing his season's tickets with us, really glad we made the trip up yesterday. EC looked very good, some changes in the roster gave some of the guys who don't get to play much a chance to show their stuff, and did so in great fashion. DeMelo looked much more confident, a couple of the Utica goals were softies, one bouncing up and over DeMelo's shoulder.
We really need to stay out of the penalty box, even though the PK did a great job last night, killing off a 5x3 wasn't easy.

Great Job Boys!!!!!

More that a quarter of the way through the season. Despite these statistics, incredulously, still maintaining a winning record. Hopefully the two weeks off allowed for some quality practice time, and a seminar in emotional restraint.
