He didn't insult business, unless it's an insult to admit that every successful investor has legions of workers, managers, and customers behind him that helped him succeed.....

He was talking about investors?? Really? I though he was addressing business owners.

Hmmm. Extending my previous analogy, Obama is telling the overtime goal scorer that "you didn't score that goal" because some equipment manager wrapped the tape on his stick for him - that is, the equipment manager provided the player with one of the tools he used in his success. I think the hockey player might find that a tiny bit insulting.

I love your goal scorer analogy. So, really, you think nobody contributes to a goal except the scorer, and everybody else is "wrapping his stick"? I think the assist scorers for a start might find that a tiny bit insulting.

And the point is winning the game, and everybody on the team contributes to that, not just the goal scorer. In fact, were it not for the guys playing defense, the scorer may not have the puck at all, or would have scored in an 8-1 loss. Every good coach teaches teamwork and that it's the name on the front, not the back.

I don't think this is a path you want to go down.

The goal scorer and goal is not the same as the relationship between business owner and infrastructure.

Again, wrong.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

Did the Romney camp plant a mole in the Obama campaign?

How else to explain this gaffe?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-z-U57BaSc

In this Obama commercial, Romney quotes Obama, the screen says Obama didn't say that, and then Obama proceeds to say exactly what Romney says he said.

Edit:

wow, this didn't take long...someone already edited Obama's intervening words, exact same commercial as before, almost....

That's not what I said.

Yes, but if, in the midst of the post-game celebration by the whole team, the coach yanks the goal-scorer out of the pile and says, "Stop it. Quit celebrating. You don't deserve to celebrate - you had help scoring that goal," would that be a smart thing for the coach to do?

I don't think this is a path you want to go down.
Oh, I'm pretty confident that the two of us can twist this analogy around at least 6 more times each. :)

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

The point of BO's story was the goal scorer needs to give back all his salary to the zamboni driver. Ie, community spirit ;)

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

Martin Sheen said it best: "Stop going for the easy buck and start producing something with your life. Create, instead of living off the buying and selling of others." He might as well have been talking to RMoney.

Maybe taken out of context. In context, Obama was saying the goal couldn't have been scored without a zamboni driver, officials, and others allowing the game to take place in the first place. The goal scorer didn't create the ice, just as the business owner doesn't create the roads, fiber optic cables, or other channels of commerce on which his goods and services travel.

so who gets to make more $$?

The Govt as it knows best. The funny part of that is, can anyone name one govt dept that isn't one giant waste of tax payer dollars. It might serve a valuable function but no matter its still a giant money sucking pit.

IIRC the passport department turns a profit. If it's still true, it would only be a drop of water in the ocean. On the other hand, the "run it like a business" Ross Perot model has its limitations. DOD, for instance, is in the business of training, equipping and maintaining an enormous military. And the "equipping" part means they're significantly in the business of buying stuff. Lots of stuff. Very big, very expensive stuff.

Other departments are significantly in the business of transferring money from one pocket to another.

Jackie Mason once said he could solve the problems of Congress "by putting them on commission."

Where did he insult business?

Let's test drive your theory. So say Obama said: "Somebody invested in civil rights legislation...if you’re in a gay relationship...you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. This legislation didn’t get invented on its own. Government action created legislation so that all gays could achieve acceptance. "

Then to your point...no...that statement is 100% fine.

We're not talking about the right to own a business. We are talking about actually doing it. The goal scorer analogy doesn't cut it. The small business person stands to lose their income, their job, their benefits, their pride and goes to work every day knowing there is no pension plan, no union steward to make it ok if you screw up, nobody to direct you...you do it by yourself. Your family is at risk, your marriage, your sanity.

Goal scorer? BS. He doesn't score and they play the next night anyway. Nobody comes and takes away his car or house if he goes cold and doesn't score for a while.

he doesn't have to go beg for a loan, ever.

Why dont you heroes give it a try? Go in Monday, quit your job, take all of your savings and start a business. Tell the wife and kids to trust you, hire 10 people who depend on you to feed their families.

Then get all high and mighty about how you didn't really do anything.

If I made a crack about people on food stamps you'd spend 10 posts wailing but you think that guy who has everything he owns tied up in that plumbing truck or that sandwich shop deserves even less respect because he or she represents 'business'.

don't forget the peeps that work in the sandwich shop, or for the plumber... they will be able to work someplace else, right??? right?? right?

This is completely missing the point, and you have done well as a dupe for the RNC message.

You comments (which are completely true, within their scope, which NOBODY challenges, and which in fact liberals have helped protect from the predations of conservatives) have ZERO to do with millionaires who will never face any risk and who have carte blache to fuck up the lives of thousands of people to make a penny margin of cost/benefit because they wrap themselves in the human shield of people starting their own businesses.

Nobody wants to mess up small business and personal start-ups.

The real macro-argument, extending over decades, is about enormous multinationals and their board members. And I have news for you. They are not your friends. They will grind you under the same as everybody else. That you cheer them on is all the more sad.
