Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

So one of my coworkers is running for City Council in Brooklyn Park, MN. I decided to do some Google searches, and came across and interesting fact sort of related to this. The Mayor of that city is officially listed as a part-time job. The mayor receives an annual paycheck of $171,000. The city has only about 55,000 people in it.

Although I doubt Mayor of Brooklyn Park is seriously a part time job...I have no problem with salaries like this. Corporations with less responsibilities pay their CEOs millions and for the most part, I have no problem with that either. Whatever the organization...if you want great outcomes you need great leadership...and getting the right person at the top is frequently worth every penny.

Yes, I remember reading about the private contractors who built and paved the roads and spread electricity to rural America. I remember just how involved private enterprise was with implementing all of that.

BP has 75k and it's not a part-time job.
The numbers I saw were listed "as of 2010," probably before the census figures were distributed. The job, however, is still officially listed as part-time.

There were some city administrator-type jobs that paid more (around $186,000), actual city employees and not elected positions, and were officially full-time jobs. My bet is that those are the people actually running the show.

To me that (obviously) means you didn't do it all on your own. That's the point of the rest of the passage. That used to be called the spirit of community. "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately." Until the voices in Glenn Beck's head started to call that EVIL KUMMINIZM.

There is some disconnect between the dots (as well as the stupidest speech ever).

There are smart people. I'm one. But I am lazy. I ain't starting a business. I have 6 weeks vacation and I take them and golf.
There are hard working people. Some dig ditches. Some clean toilets in my office. However, they, like me, don't start businesses. We are employed by those people (smart AND hardworking).
Through in resourceful and risk seeking and you have people who are not "like everyone else".

All the smart and hardworking people in the world can want to work, but if people who create businesses (which generate revenue) don't employ them -- well we can't all then go work for the government, ya know?

None of which is a counter to his overall intent.

Apparently the money appeared out of thin air for those projects

Just to be clear..... the quote is:

So, he said...if you've got a business, you didn't build that.

What is he referring to? The roads leading to your business?

Whoa, you mean the country didn't start with a bloated government first? How did people eat and live? Surely they needed a government to make their decisions for them and create the paved roads they used to settle this country

If I could draw, my political cartoon would be a Obama and a CEO standing in front of a gleaming corporate edifice with paid workers streaming out the doors, alongside a crumbling bridge leading up to it, and Obama telling the CEO, "Well, you didn't build THAT."

You're right Mr. President - he built the other 97% of the stuff in the picture.

And then the CEO turns out to be Romney, and all the workers are filing out of the empty building with boxes of their stuff while a Chinese man is loading the equipment onto a boat with a Chinese flag?

...why aren't we good at drawing? It's got to pay better than posting on this board.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

I have no need to demonize Romney.

But the demonizing of Obama here is past ridiculus...whether its misunderstanding a simple sentence or pushing straightforward daily outcomes of a govt service to bizarre extremes. Is it any wonder why the political system is frozen when people can't even frame the issue correctly?

Can I add a toll that generates more revenue than needed to maintain the bridge, a river and bridge authority police car because we need an entirely different police force for bridges ( I think the firm ground cops are afraid of heights) and 6 guys looking at the cracks in the bridge while they lean on shovels?

If he had made a statement insulting gays, women, immigrants or minorities people would be up in arms...but since all he did was insult people who run their own businesses that is fine, we should all be more understanding

Quoting your post as an example, but speaking generally . . . Why go through life looking for insults?

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

Where did he insult business?

Let's test drive your theory. So say Obama said: "Somebody invested in civil rights legislation...if you’re in a gay relationship...you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. This legislation didn’t get invented on its own. Government action created legislation so that all gays could achieve acceptance. "

Then to your point...no...that statement is 100% fine.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

He didn't insult business, unless it's an insult to admit that every successful investor has legions of workers, managers, and customers behind him that helped him succeed.

The cult of the Master of the Universe businessman was also very popular during the last quarter of the 19th century. William Graham Sumner seems like an asshole now, and today's acolytes won't fair much better in history.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

It wasn't an insult. It was to lay the groundwork in the first sentence.

"give something back" to most of us I charitable gifts. Here it means "tax revenue". And don't start to try and tell me it doesn't
