Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

You know the answer to that: optics. The Romney campaign has to do everything in their power between now and election to hide just how different Romney's reality is from the vast majority of Americans'. People do not trust candidates who haven't shared their experiences. As you said, Romney already comes across as a spoiled preppy date rapist, and this directly exacerbates that image problem.
As compared to how much most of the public shares experiences with Obama? It's rare we have a President who substantively can have shared experiences with the broad public, but some are better at making the public think so than others, which is I guess where Obama has the edge.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

It's never the act, it's the coverup. There's a coverup going on here.
You pick the strangest things about which to be outraged.

If I don't disclose something I did that was presumably legal and fine, how exactly is that non-disclosure a cover up? Is there some investigation regarding candidates turning over all their past tax returns that I'm unaware of?

Calling this a cover up is every bit as stupid as saying if Obama doesn't turn over all his college transcripts and what-not, that's a cover up. We have far bigger issues to deal with than who got what grades in school and who paid what on their past tax returns to the treasury.

Oh and Kepler, the idea that most voters have something tangible in common with a major party candidate for president is laughable. Last I checked, most of us haven't had anywhere near the access to money and power as Romney and Obama have. Most of us weren't educated at Harvard or anything close to that institution's quality.

Then again, I don't believe it really matters whether or not they are all that similar to the rest of us. In fact, I think that if you want to be in charge of this country, you should probably be a cut above the vast majority of us. I don't want a truck driver or bartender as my president - I want somebody that knows what the **** he is doing and knows how to communicate.

Who's outraged?

I think Obama covered up his transcripts.

Seems to me full disclosure should be the order of the day. If you can't disclose, don't run for President.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

Why would I possibly think you're disparaging the job when you compare it to raising money in the 6th grade?

You misunderstood. I'm sorry that I disparaged the job by intimating earlier that it wasn't a real job. That's what I'm sorry for.

The 6th grade money-raising thing, I was comparing negatively to a common understanding of the job of a professional "fundraiser".

By calling it a cover up, you clearly are or are needlessly inserting inflammatory language with regards to an insignificant issue.

Exactly what bearing does a past tax return have on someone's qualification to be president (assuming the filing was legal and proper)? Exactly what bearing does someone's grades in an Economics course freshman year in college have on anything?

Are you seriously attempting to convince me and others here that your vote hinges on such trivial things and not where the candidates stand on the issues?

Oh, I agree completely. Most presidential nominees have spent the majority of their lives in elite schools, hobnobbing with the wealthy, and having staff who take care of all the mundane details the rest of us spend our time wrestling with. They all have to play the Joe Dirt image game at election time. Some are great at it, others struggle. Romney sweats elitism from every pore, so he already has a problem. This story plays to that problem.

Since Romney has no standing on any issue (flip-flop, flip-flop) I need more information to decide whether or not to vote for him.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

Most of us weren't educated at Harvard or anything close to that institution's quality.

and those of us who came from families of modest means who were educated at institutions like that quickly developed a healthy suspicion of the motives and intentions of people who did graduate from said institutions, based on first-hand experience with many of our classmates! :)

If my wife could snag a $350,000 per year no show job as a legal way to "bribe" me....but then I'd have to be in a position in which it would be worth trying to "bribe" me in the first place... oh well.

I'll save you the trouble: just don't waste your time voting. It's not like your vote matters in this state anyway (at least not at the presidential level). At the congressional level, it probably doesn't matter, either.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

Wow
Was the return legal? If so who cares?
People might have an issue with a man worth $250M not paying a dime in taxes...especially after hearing the rhetoric that people who don't pay federal income taxes are leeching off the system...

Funny how that logic escapes them.

Whoa! They changed it to a wealth tax instead of an income tax? I'll have to read up on that - sounds like big news.

As soon as they pass a tax based on our net worth, please let me know (and logistically this might be a nightmare, but perhaps one based on net worth rather than income is the way to go - but that's an issue for tax reform discussion not whether or not what somebody is currently paying into the system is "fair").

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

Such is the bizarre and byzantine nature of the federal tax code, whose current status can be laid at the feet both parties.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

If The Mittster has paid next to no taxes on hundreds of millions of dollars in income, all this legalese some cons are using out here is still going to end up in the same place at the end of the day, electoral doom. Look, the guy has to pay some taxes. I don't care if he's found a way to set up off shore tax shelters to hide income. Its the same problem most Americans have with continual tax cuts for rich, which is how much is enough already?

I didn't say there was a wealth tax. I said that there has been an awful lot of rhetoric from *ahem* a certain side of the aisle that people who don't pay federal income taxes are leeching off the system somehow. It seems a tad bit hypocritical of those same people to support a man for president who is, in their own words, a leech.

Yeah. How *dare* Mitt Romney not pay any taxes while taking advantages of social programs like unemployment benefits, medicaid, food stamps, and public housing. What a leech.
