Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

I'm outraged. Turns out the "human toilet brush" has had some foreign investments. Shocking. And she ain't the only one, either.

what a horrible face! There oughta be a decency law against linking to stuff like that. Or I could print it out and hang it up in the yard to scare away zombies and mountain gorillas. Just in case.

She's not a candidate for here???

Interesting read on how the number of teachers has doubled since 1970 while the student population has only increased 8.5%. In that time test scores have remained flat. It we were to go back to the same number of teachers as then the country would save save $210B.

Since 1970, the public school workforce has roughly doubled—to 6.4 million from 3.3 million—and two-thirds of those new hires are teachers or teachers' aides

So, 1 million incremental hires that are neither teachers nor teacher's aides. All of this coming during the technology boom, when nearly every business in the world has experienced efficiency.

3 million more people who are beholden to the government, will vote to support those who provide their employment and will become part of public employees pensions (provided they aren't all insolvent by the time these 3mm retire).

But we can't have sports teams, drama departments, marching bands and the like.

edit: read that again...$210billion every single year, provided nobody gets a raise and benefits expense doesn't increase...

This kind of article draws easy conclusions, but needs some further analysis.

First, there's a lot more kids in public schools these days for whom English is not their primary language. This adds a strain onto the system a lot more so than 40 years ago. A good example from here was when my alma mater was hired to run an urban school system in the state. 10 years on some naysayers were spouting off about how test scores were flat over that time. What the university correctly responded was that the scores for kids who remained in the system for all 10 years were up a good amount. The problem was when kids cycled in that weren't native English speakers. You had to educate them, but until they became proficient their test scores obviously lagged.

Next I also have to think suburbanization might be jacking up costs. Not sure if busing and the like is included here but even if it isn't thriving urban neighborhood schools are almost a thing of the past as the population has moved out and spread out. This is also adding to staffing and costs.

But at the end of the day, personnel expense is up 100% and students are up 8.5%.

Not sure which school you were in at BU but over in the School of Management they taught me that is bad.

Who said anything about test scores? The question is why there are so many more teachers per pupil, period.

Bzzzzzt. US population density in 1990: 70.3 per sq. mi., and in 2000: 79.6.

Any other excuses, er, I mean, theories?

Re: Elections 2012 -- Kull Wahad!!!

Careful when interpreting time series data. The author chose a year when baby boomer school enrollment peaked, to minimize the apparent growth in enrollment.

To be sure, enrollment hasn't increased at the same rate as staff employment -- just know that you're seeing the worst-case comparison. :)

Meanwhile, JJ jr's wife evidently thinks we're as stupid as he is. Expressing "hope" that his doctors "will be able to release details" of his medical condition. Uh, dear, the only people silencing his doctors are you and your husband. And there's no power on earth that could stop you from sharing the nature of his "illness" and prognosis with us.
