Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

"No means yes" is not an "amorous advance" outside of frat row.

I was thinking the same thing.

No "advance" that I ever made required a knee or any other physical defense on her part.

Maybe he was joking, coz, you know, that sort of thing is really funny.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Except an abortion, birth control in schools (some as low as 12 yrs old), and what not. The law is getting contradictory. I mean if you're going to say it's statutory rape, why are you passing out birth control to minors? Does that mean the state condones sex with minors or what?

Minors don't have sex with other minors?

C'mon, people.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

The linkage of this issue with contraception is instructive, though. Part of the underlying moral fervor here is the idea that sex outside of marriage and for purposes other than procreation is a sin, and that women who engage in it get what they deserve. There is a punitive edge to extreme fundamentalist attitudes towards sex. We see it in its unvarnished fury in Islamic laws where rape victims in cities are stoned "because they could have called out," but all religious taboos about sex are rooted in the rivalry between the consuming passion of sexuality and the consuming passion of God -- it's a difference of degree, not kind. It's no wonder sex is feared, scorned, and attacked by extreme fundamentalists. It's the competition.

There's a good sociological reason, too. Sexuality in historical male-dominated cultures is extremely destabilizing. It has to be controlled or everything from property rights to succession lines are threatened. Scriptures were laid down in part as legal codes to keep these societies functioning. Since women were regarded as possessions, first of their fathers and then of their husbands, they became regulated just like slaves or grain. When women "became" people the logical thing to do was make them the decision-makers over their own sexuality. Religion needs a Women's Reformation.

Actually there's all sorts of health reasons to not be promiscuous (or whatever the favored word is). The media never says a peep about it, but there's an explosion of STDs in the country. And other things like a significant rise in cervical cancer in very young gals, even teens. Recently met a 21 year old gal with cervical cancer. Very sad situation.

The religious stuff, I'll leave with you as I know it's pointless to go there.

So if you have sex for reasons other than procreation then you are being promiscuious?

Not necessarily. But, when a person sleeps with another person, each of you are in effect sleeping with all the other people your partner has slept with, for purposes of understanding STD and STI exposure. The math, and attendant risk, goes up exponentially. If people looked at the numbers they'd be shocked.

Thanks Mr. Gray. This Sex Ed lecture has been very helpful.

This is why abstinence only is the thing to teach young people... "Just don't do it and then we won't have to teach you about birth control, safe sex and stds!"

And there'll be more of those if some conservatives have their way and we don't vaccinate for hpv.

Being enlightened, I've already had my 13 year old son vaccinated. In the doctor's office, of course mortified, he's like, "But I'm not even having sex yet." I said, "I think you will some day. You're getting the shot(s)."

Protect himself and more importantly, some woman down the line.

There's a big difference between choosing the vaccine and forcing it on the population.

Nice example of why this is an exploding problem.:rolleyes:

Do you encourage promiscuity?

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

well regardless of your position, any attempt to legislate the morals of teenagers is doomed to failure.

He encourages turning people into zombies by forcing medication on them to no end. I bet his son now becomes dumber and lazier because of the side effects of the vaccination; I know it happened to me with forced college vaccinations.

I love it how in some situations people tout education to no end as being the answer to fixing problems or at least a major part of the solution. But there's an epidemic of STDs and STIs out there, there's far too little media coverage or widespread education efforts and knuckledraggers like Gurtholfin have nothing to say beyond a snide comment about abstinence education. You make teenagers more aware of STDs and STIs, the risks of numerous sexual partners, etc. and it might reduce the 8-10 million teenagers a year who contract an STD.

I don't know. Maybe people just don't care. Like they don't care about the mountain of debt that's being created for our kids.

It's just like any American interpretation of formal education: There's a huge difference between concept and execution. However, it may just be apathy.

Ok, Jenny McCarthy, why don't you go run along and let the grownups talk now.

Knuckledragger. Yeah, I'm the backwards one between us.

LOL

I bet that the 21 year old with cervical cancer and her family wishes at this point that it had been "forced on her."

Of course, I'm sure some will blame it on her instead for having sex. Wait for it....
